Hacking/gagging type cough. Occasional regurg/vomit? Advice.

So Louie has always had this hacking cough type thing, which is occurs more often in the morning after he wakes up, or just randomly throughout the day. It sounds like he is gagging or coughing up a hairball. Recently however, 2x in this past week, he has thrown up. Now, neither one of us has been p...

Re: anyone with cream chow?

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/glue_stick/louiebed.jpg Louie is a cream chow - he is 1.5 years old. He's not groomed in this pic (which is why I chose it), but you get the idea of cleanliness. =) He never gets dirty. Then again, he's not really exposed to a lot of situations that could get...

Re: The Life of Louie

January 16, 2014: Update on Louie. Since being diagnosed with severe congenital hip dysplasia in both hips on October 28, 2013, Louie has had his good days and bad days. @ 1.5 years in age, I think that he has his youth on his side. Since starting him on glucos + chondr supplements (Pet Naturals by ...

Re: Help! Insurance question

We have our chow, Louie, on Petplan . Cannot complain and is very affordable for us. You can customize your own plan. Ours is a $200 deductible with 100% reimbursement (we have bronze plan which is for $10k coverage/year), and is roughly $455 a year. They will not cover knee problems, but will cover...

Re: Nasty Itch!!!

I just wanted to let you know that I am experiencing the same problem. Louie keeps biting at the base of his tail because it is itchy. He'll chase his tail, or drop and sit suddenly to chew at it (cuz scratching at it is not optional). There doesn't seem to be anything in the area, but of course red...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

Thanks guys. I think I will give Zeel a try, seeing as its better for osteo and arthritic related pain (and since he has hip dysplasia, this may be a better option). Also, I am having issues with his tail... Has been chewing at the base of it and I have noticed some redness and a scab or two (not to...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

Louie is a beautiful boy! Its so hard to find out that one of our "kids" has a health problem. It sounds like you are doing a great job taking care of him, he is very lucky. I would caution you about the Remadyl. If at any time when he is taking it he starts acting the least bit strange, ...

tail chewing

Alrighty. I have had Louie on a hip+joint supplement called Pet Naturals by Vermont (chewables) and they seem to have brought his energy level back up to speed after a month of use, he seems less reluctant to go up the back steps, and more importantly less stiffness in his back legs. Would def recom...

Re: Chewing Front Legs--Anxiety, Allergies?

Assuming you've cancelled out any parasite possibilities, environmental stressors, and bacterial infections, it could just be a tick; a redirected form of anxiety and/or excitement, boredom. In any case, assuming no medical problem, it may be something you cannot avoid: a nervous tick of some kind. ...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

After the holidays, we are planning to meet with an orthopedic dog surgeon to devise a more clear cut plan as far as maintaining the problem is concerned. At least this way we will know how to properly maintain the issue (I personally am always better with routine) and keep him comfortable for the l...

So I've uploaded his x-ray (severe hip dysplasia) from the veterinarian if anyone is interested. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/glue_stick/0LOUIE.jpg I'm feeling discouraged as of late. I almost feel like Louie has regressed starting from October to now (November 3). Just this night, Louie ...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

Thanks again Laura. Our vet is only capable of performing FHO surgery and also recommends them to complete hip replacements. He also suggests that surgery is only applicable when and if we feel surgery is his only option. I guess we too will have to wait and see and hit that mile marker when and if ...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

So Louie is back from the vet. He had pretty much confirmed our worse fears. Louie has pretty severe hip dysplasia as displayed on his xrays (we have a copy). While the head of the femurs are formed (though with slight deformity), the entirety of the femur head is not even in the joint socket of the...

Thank you Laura. Yes, I understand the reputation cosequin has developed =) A lot of customers swear by it. We do sell it at Petsmart, and while I work there, amazon seems to be my go-to ticket if I were to purchase it (or anything nowadays). Ha ha. So this is day one on the rimadyl . I gave Louie t...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

Thank you so much for the response Rory's Dad. Louie had his first vet visit today. The vet suspects a joint problem. He shows all of the symptoms, only he wants to rule out congenital reasons. He has given a non steroidal Rimadyl script for 5 days to see if it helps. I have scheduled a separate vet...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?

Thank you for the response. I am prepared to meet whatever diagnoses, but I only hope that it is nothing too serious for both him and my wallet. This is why it pays to have pet insurance I suppose (so glad I decided to go with it. $200 deduct. w/ 100% reimbursement.) I think that finding the time to...
