Re: Chow/malamute mix
I know a lot of issues have come up between same *Censored Word* chows on the site, but my family has only ever had females, for the last year and a half, three females, two of which where chows. They have never had a cross word amongst each other. Tess and Tacia (collie) ate side by side for eight ...

Re: My collie Tacia
Thank you all for your kind words before. Tacia crossed the Bridge today. Her vet was nice enough to come to the house so her last day didn't involve a trip to the vets. It was peaceful, but heartbreaking. She and Tess had been together for eight years, I think she will miss her as much as the rest ...

Re: In Case You Didn't Know
You would have had my support regardless of what you decided to do. Having never been in such a situation, I'm not sure what I would do. Only the people living with the girls and who have seen what's going on can know what is best for everyone. Regarding working on their issues, I was watching an ep...

Re: Squeeky Toys
Have you ever tried any of the Tuff toys. There are a couple of different brands that are made for aggressive chewers. They are made of super tough material that is much harder for them to tear apart. Many still have squeakers too. I haven't seen any at my PetSmart, but I believe Target carries a li...

Re: What questions to ask?
If it were me, I would insist on a home visit. If it's close to you, use the visit as a meet and greet also, if you decide to go out of your area, maybe see if there is a local rescue that would be willing to do a home visit. There are people that sound great on paper, or even on the phone, but ther...

Re: Help
Fiona had some serious seperation anxiety issues when I first got her. She still does have some minor issues, but has gotten much better. I worked to teach her that when I leave, I will be coming back. She not only would bark when I would leave, but she was eat the carpet, rip blinds off the windows...

My collie Tacia
I haven't had much time to post lately but was upset this evening and knew of at least one place where everyone would understand. As I sat on my parent's couch this evening folding laundry, preparing to go home to Columbus tomorrow after an extended weekend for the holiday, I realized that this is m...

Milo's so funny. This story reminded me of the lion from the Wizard of Oz. He was brave all along, he just need some extra confidence.

Re: Cllicker Training for Chows?
Clicker training is starting to work really well with Fiona. We have not attended any classes (I don't think she would be welcome at a class...someone may try to touch her), but I use it for our training sessions. It took almost two months to get her used to the clicker, but now that she doesn't run...

Re: Gilbert's stealth moves and other topics
I used to dog sit for a family that had a chocolate lab. They got her as an eight week old puppy from a lab rescue. She was up until two years old and every kind of training program imaginable, the most wild, out of control dog I have ever met. She was hyper, all the time, no manners, would plow ove...

Re: We love the cold
Tess becomes impossible to get inside in the cold weather. She would stay outside until she froze to my parent's back porch. Fiona likes the cold and will walk forever, where as over the summer, she would walk 15 minutes and was ready to go back inside. Tacia, my collie, hates the cold. She sleeps m...

Re: HELP! Mochi's Ears
Be very careful with ear infections and head shaking. Fiona had the same thing six weeks ago, finally shook her head hard enough to break the blood vessels in her ear causing an auroral hematoma. Six weeks later, her ear is still healing...very, very slowly. It will never stand up again, which if fi...

Re: Finding a puppy
I pulled up this thread today...needed some info to email to someone and ended up just sending them the link to this post, but since I spent a decent amount of time finding it (who would have thought we would post so much in less than a year), I thought I would bump it back to the top. Aside from on...

Re: Help -- we put a "hold" on Chia
Oh, I hope you decide to get her...she sounds like a good match. As for the skin thing, if she has recently had puppies, the hormone changes can make their fur really thin. Allergies, especially to fleas will definately do it (Tess used to lose 75% of her fur over just a few fleas), and poor nutriti...

Helpful tip for pet owners
Never take your pets to the pet store when they are hungry. They will steal things! I had to get Fiona some food tonight...she had breakfast this morning, but had no dog food left for her evening meal. Her and I went to the pet store this evening to get more dog food and she not only searched every ...

Re: Fiona's surgery
Fiona's ear is much better...and I feel much better since going back to the vet. I did not realize they actually removed an oval of skin about an inch wide and two inches long. I assumed it was a straight incision so when I could actually see into her ear flap (could see the cartiledge) I though the...

Re: California Proposition 2 - Confinement of Animals
We rely on animals for so much...food, clothing, companionship, etc. Many of these animals give their lives so we can eat, norish our bodies, grow, develop...is it really too much to ask just to give them a little dignity and show them a little humanity before they make the ultimate sacrifice for us...

Re: Fiona's surgery
So we are heading back to the vets tomorow. It's been almost two weeks and her ear still has a large part that still looks like a fresh incision. I thought it was healing more than it actually is...it just has drainage that is kind of crusty in parts...but not an actual scab. I called the vet today ...

Re: I recently bought a chow chow puppy w/ papers or did i
Some chows can have spots of pink...just a pigment issue..often from poorly bred dogs. In the future, please do not buy from pet stores. All pet stores get their dogs from puppymills. By buying from a petstore, you are giving money back to puppymills which is sealing a life of pain, misery and tortu...

Re: To PTS or not..... Need your advise
At 9 months old, you have a teenage chow...like human teenagers, teenage chows like to see how far they can push boundaries. If this is the case (and I am not a professional in any way) but your son did exactly what Caymen wanted him to do. Caymen decided he didn't want to be pet anymore, he nipped,...

Re: McKenzie's entropion surgery
She will be woozy probably until tomorrow morning. Also sometimes they whine after being under anesthesia so that could be why she is whining and not because her eyes hurt. Between the anesthesia and the pill shot they gave Fiona a few weeks ago, is was almost 24-hours before she really pulled out o...

Re: Fiona's surgery
Fiona's ear is doing better. It still looks bad on the inside, but mostly because it's scabbing over finally. She still shakes her head from time to time but nothing major, I'm hoping it calms down soon. I'm still cleaning it a couple times a day because with her ear floppy now, it just seems like i...

Fiona went back to the vets today...I'm not sure what to think of her appointment. This is a vet that my family has used for year for a wide range of pet issues...

Fiona has to go back to the vet tomorrow morning. Her ear started swelling again today, not like it had before, but more than swelling from the surgery, so it's back to the vet tomorrow morning for them to look at it. She's on an antibiotic to make sure it didn't get infected and the stitches where ...

Tess and Tacia have always shed twice a year, spring and fall. After the fall shed, their coats come in nice and thick for the winter. The fall shade is never as bad as the spring shed.
