Re: Rolyx and clicker training
We never do it anymore, but every now and again we whip it out to see what she will do. A couple clicks and it's like she never lost it. If you get On Demand, look up some episodes of It's me or the Dog There are some excellent training techniques for reactive dogs. Never hurts to have as many weap...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
I don't think they ever completely forget, I trained my 2nd chow with a different method of training and he'd be a bit rusty, but pop back into it quick enough. I have to laugh because I have been asking some husky folk for some help with Rolyx and they keep going on how it's both the chow and husky...

Re: They want to take away my baby :(
So glad to hear you squared things away. Honestly, I think it was crap to do that...though I know it's their right, things like this really should be 'grandfathered' in since you were there before management. But no matter, it worked out and what's important is you still have Apollo.

Re: confused about chow puppy's tongue
I've been a little interested in this myself, as I did see a purebred chow [no doubts...may of even been someone on here] that had a splotchy pink and purple tongue. Gorgeous chow, just didn't have the full purple tongue. My guess is no, it won't eventually turn purple...but I won't swear to it. I h...

Re: NEW PUPPY!
Grats on your new girl. She looks so sweet sleeping there. A note on potty pads inside the house...from what I have read, it's a bad idea because they can't tell the difference from weeing inside verses out. Unless you want her going on a pad all her life, that is the only way I would use a pad pers...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
I'm ok using hand signals, I just have to learn them and start remembering to use them...clicker training isn't so much hard as a pain in the toosh. I think I'm getting it down and then forget one of the 10 steps. lol I'm getting there, just like Ro...I got some learning to do. Do you still see the ...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
I did not realize you were clicking for focus, I thought he was just getting a bunch of free treats...lol. Every treat should be because of a behavior, every behavior should have a name/hand signal. For 'focus', try 'watch me' and the hand signal is you pointing at your eyes/face. Treat when he loo...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
LOL clicker for your brain...I think I need one a lot of times. I totally get it that not all trainers get chows...I took my male chow to a obedience class for several years and he did great. Worked very little with him and he still completed high in his class. But when he didn't want to do somethin...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
Aw I'm sorry Chowpups, I need to learn to read better as I see her dates on your siggy now. :( I've lost a couple chows too, and like you...am getting ready for my next chow adventure. ;) Well full chow, Ro is more husky personality wise than chow...but I still love the bumble head. I'm taking Ro to...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
I totally get that Chowpups, if you watch the video closely...you will see where my timing is off a couple times [and there was one time I should of clicked for focus but fumbled]. I'm improving, but took me a long time to get it through my thick head that I need to 'click' the moment they do the de...

Re: Rolyx and clicker training
I have thought about clicker training for my two. Rolyx looks good in the video. Thanks Ursas dad, it took me a LONG time to come around to clicker training. In fact, it took Rolyx...he has some serious behavior issues and the training I know is ineffective with him. So classic case of admitting no...

Rolyx and clicker training
I've been having a lot of problems with Rolyx getting too over stimulated around public places, especially around dogs. So we are working on clicker training, which is new for us both. Thought I'd share...keep in mind, we're both still noobs and a work in process. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X...

Re: OMG!!! FIRST TIME!! :O
Step in the right direction. :) I personally find chows are less likely to bark, they tend to save it and do it when it matters. My chows growing up were like this and my chow mix is the same. My little yorkie/pom will be yapping his head off and Rolyx still won't. He may do what I lovingly call the...

Re: Chows as service dogs
I agree chows have stubborn down to a art. From what I have read, dogs aren't considered mature until 18 months and until then, it can be hard to determine them as a good service dog or not. Fozz is still pretty young, so you never know...but as you said, they are all therapeutic in their own way. :...

Lobis is lovely, looks like he's enjoying his time out. I like his harness, does that attach from the front or is it one of those halti lead harnesses?

Re: Looking to buy a Chow, Best breeder?
Hi, after doing all my research, I've decided to get a chow chow. I was wondering if anyone can point out some good breeders out there? Right now, I'm looking at http://www.shanghaichows.com/index.html and http://www.thunderboltchows.com/Males.html (would love to get a chow that looks like Bo/Trace...

Re: Chows as service dogs
You are correct on the purpose of therapy dogs, however they weren't what I was talking about. :) There are several types of service dogs, but essentially all of them serve the same purpose...to help the disabled, mentally or physically. There is two types [that I am aware of] for mental...one is em...

Re: Chows as service dogs
Cam, as for choosing a pup...it's all ready done [I did check shelters first, but all they had were adults that didn't get along with other dogs]. I choose the pup before knowing about service dogs, otherwise I may of choose different. Regardless...I will love the pup no matter what, even if he just...

Chows as service dogs
First of all, I am new here...hello, and nice to meet you all. :) I got my first chow when I was 13 [35 now] and my second when I was 16. I have NEVER connected or bonded with a dog like I have with a chow, particularly my second Chow, a red male. I currently have a chow/husky mix named Rolyx, who n...
