Re: Tales (or is it tails?) from the toilet

Khana would like to commend all her fellow chowsters on their grasp of training their humans. It seems that most of the chows have done their best to teach their humans the chow language, although humans ARE somewhat limited in intelligence. She would like a video of Alf falling over when he barks -...

Re: Just had a heart attack...

I left the back gate open one day when I was moving things around, and let the dogs out at night - and as they raced out I suddenly thought "OMG! Did I leave the gate open??". Of course, they all (five of them) zoomed right out the open gate. But by some miracle, when I called they all cam...

Re: Another ruined thread....

Sam, what would have made the most sense was to state your purpose and then show an example by listing your OWN chows, their problems, their breeder and the backgrounds. Then you would show by example, not expect people to try to interpret your exact (albeit poorly stated) intentions. Why HAVEN'T yo...

Re: How big is your Chow?

Dora's a little thing. According to her jump heighth card (from AKC, when we were doing agility) she measures 16 3/4 inches at the withers (shoulderblades). That's 42.5 cm tall. She weighs 38-40 pounds (around 17 kg). Kylee was also pretty small, just under 18 inches and about 40-42 pounds. Khana is...

Tales (or is it tails?) from the toilet

So I'm sitting on the throne, and Khana walks in. I can't go to the bathroom alone. It's not allowed. The bathroom is tiny. I can sit on the toilet and wash my hands in the sink without even leaning. The chows take full advantage of this and block the doorway anytime I'm in there. I'm sure they thin...

Re: Pure breed chow?????

A temporary pink spot can occur from an injury, too. These generally re-gain the pigment as they heal. Khana has done this a few times - she likes to chew on very hard things and has put raw spots on her tongue. They're pinkish for awhile and then go back to their normal dark color. I try to keep he...

Just going by what you describe, I would say that Buddha needs you to step up and put things in the right order. And in your household, that will probably end up being humans, Annie and then Buddha. That's not a bad thing - if Annie is naturally more dominant than Buddha, trying to make it the other...

Re: How old is your chow chow?

Dora will be 11 on the first of September. She was just in to the vet's today and had a full check-up (she's got a urinary tract infection which I noticed and took in a urine sample for yesterday, but it had been awhile since they'd seen her so they requested an exam too). The vet checked her teeth,...

Re: Problems w/ Annie and Buddha

Actually putting her in her place might be very effective - dogs often have a way of working those kinds of things out on their own! But if he won't, then you'll have to step in and figure out a way to stop it. From what you describe, it sounds to me like rough play and that Annie is just grabbing o...

I'm only two days into this and I have to agree, no fun running around after her with cleaning spray in one hand, and paper towel in the other, to clean the wood floor after her. Shelly *LOL* ... that's why I go with the boys underwear and the sanitary pads. I don't want Khana dripping all over (es...

Re: Signs of heat

I use boys or mens briefs so that the tail can go out through the penis hole. They seem to stay on really well. I use a sanitary pad in them to soak up any blood or discharge. But if I have them outside with me or if they're indoors but kenneled, I leave the pants off of them so that they can clean ...

Re: Rescue Chows vs Breeder Chows

See, statements like the last two posters made only create a huge rift between people here. Making statements like "Everytime someone supports a breeder and buys instead of adopting, another dog dies" or "I occasionally think it's stupidity, arrogance or ignorance" are designed t...

Re: Bruises/ grazes on forehead ?

It's very likely that he's rubbing at the eye when you're not around and what you're seeing is scratches caused by his dewclaw. I'm having a similar problem with my little black chow, Dora, who got a scrape or bug bite on her muzzle and then proceeded to rub it with her paw until she scratched a big...

Re: Spay and neuter....

I think you can find studies to support both concepts - early spay/neuter and late spay/neuter. It all depends on what a person wants to promote. From a practical standpoint, I was a vet tech for many years and back then it was common to recommend that dogs be spayed before their first cycle and tha...

Re: Signs of heat

I have two intact girls right now - Khana and Tazer (the shepherd, just turned a year old). Khana is 3 1/2 now and been in heat many times. Tazer's just been in heat once so far. Dora was intact until she was six. There are a few symptoms that signal that a dog is in heat, and it all depends on the ...

Re: Does your Chow sleep on the bed with you?

Khana sleeps on the bed pretty much every night. She likes to curl up against my back when I'm on my side. She has to be touching me - if I move over then she wiggles around until she's up against me again. I'm amazed that she doesn't get too hot. In the mornings she moves around in front of me so t...

It's so scary when something like this happens. It's heart-wrenching when they're crying like that. Re: Are there any seeing eye chows known?

I don't know of any chows that are working as seeing eye dogs. These dogs have to be so dependable that the trainers tend to stick with breeders who naturally want to please their owners (not a huge trait in most of our chows .. *L*). But chows as therapy dogs or service dogs is certainly a good goa...

Re: Chi-Ching overcoming his fears.....

You don't have to be registered, per se, but you do have to have a number from the AKC. What you can do is get an ILP number. This stands for Indefinite Listing Privilege (they may have changed the name on that, but that's what it used to be called). All that's required is that you have a dog that a...

Re: Chi-Ching overcoming his fears.....

Rally Obedience is now a recognized AKC event, so you can actually title your dog in rally. Basically it's a series of exercises that you follow and perform. For a novice dog, there are about 12-15 exercises in each trial. The exercises are on cards that are placed on little stands and numbered so y...
