Re: why do people think chows are one of the most dangerous

Heh! People are scarred of me as well. Never bit one of them. I've just been very focused and not always worried about collateral damage. - Jason ;) ShenLung is very intimidating, at 85lbs of solid muscle and bone, speed of a rabbit, ability to jump up an 8' fence and not too interested in being mau...

Re: Does anyones Chow do this??

Yeah ShenLung has a stuffed beaver he has been fond of between the age of 4yrs and 6yrs (current) and carries it around quite a bit. He kept it from FengHuang and now keeps it from FuShiLu. FuShiLu keeps sneaking in and grabbing Eeyore's (Lionheadd rabbit) stuffed bunny which we think is funny as sh...

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!

If you search the forum, many of us have been where you are and a lot of useful info has popped up. For us it was about consistency in setting the pecking order and sticking with it along with staying out of the arguments as interfering seemed to always make it worse. Once our girl at the time seeme...

Re: perfect vacation for chow

We live in Orleans (Ottawa), Ontario Canada, and head to Main (13 hrs), South Carolina (19 hrs) , North Carolina (17 hrs) annually and they love it. This year was FuShiLu's first big trip and she had a blast, loved the ocean, once she realized waves were not attacking, ShenLung has never been so rel...

Re: Expectation: Walking with him; Reality: Him dragging me

I've never choked a dog, just so we're clear. A choker is a tool, if your dog pulls until it actually chokes you have far more serious problems than you think. To be clear, ShenLung could pull you up a cliff while you dangle from his choker and leash without missing a breath, not that it's recommend...

Re: The Chow Chow, Super Vigilant!!!

Haha! ShenLung can identify neighbourhood cars, gets upset when a strange one comes down the street. He even knows all the FedEx, and UPS vans, even when they try to trick him. ;) Very few things evade his hearing. Chows rock!

Re: different types of chows

We have the powerful square built chows. ShenLung is long hair rough, FengHuang was a smooth with some rough main and pants, FuShiLu is the shorter rough hair. All ours have the massive feet and build, they are not slow though and ShenLung and FuShiLu can jump like few others. Faces very square, bro...

Re: Puppy Teething

Hehe, we have been fortunate as rawhide, rope, icecubes and siblings have been enough. No furniture has been lost to the cause. I did spend 2 months, every night with FengHuang chewing on my hand and me pulling her lower jaw to get it growing properly. ShenLung was a dream. FuShiLu loves to chew my ...

Only 4 dogs on that list are not currently in our neighbourhood. Maybe this is a magical place, maybe.... 7 of this dogs are upto 3 or more in the neighbourhood. I guess the list was myopic..... ;)

Re: Expectation: Walking with him; Reality: Him dragging me

Actually it is a choker we use, but it comes with an integrated collar to keep the chain from the fur. This will always provide the greatest control until you get things the way you want. We still use these even though its completely unnecessary now. Even FuShiLu at 15 wks is almost completely voice...

Re: Charlie and Borscht Update (They're Back Together Again!

Awesome! We knew it was going to happen!! I could post photos from when FengHuang educated Shenlung from the terrible two's. In the end they were best friends even if she had grumpy moments. FuShiLu and ShenLung are best if buds and she can be trying, but he is amazingly patient with her. Your chowl...

Re: Canadian breeder advice

Both ShenLung and FengHuang were Josol (Port Hope, Ontario) and we couldn't be happier. They are shutting down though due to illness' with both owners. FuShiLu is from LionBear (Prada, Manitoba, shutting down due to extreme allergies developed by owner) both her parents are Josol derived. That wold ...

Re: Get 2nd Chow Chow Pup??? Any advice?

I've always found you can make anything work if your paying attention to the dynamics. When FengHuang passed way, ShenLung was just as heart broken as we were. The arrival of FuShiLu as a puppy took getting used to all around. ShenLung is 5 yrs old, and other than scaring the beejeepers out of her a...

Re: Expectation: Walking with him; Reality: Him dragging me

Some great humour here, you need that with a chow(s). As I have had 4 in my life, and with Nat 3 in the last 5 yrs and currently a 5 yr old and 15 wk old puppy I can say your getting the proper treatment. ;) Get a really long leash, that you can hold at various lengths and still drags several feet b...

Re: Chow chow poops in unfamiliar places

Haha, ShenLung is like that, favorite thing is to poop on a tree, yes on. Butt high, ensuring it falls down the bark for max exposure! However for the first 2 years of his life, he would only poop in the yard. Held it for five days over Christmas as we were out east. Got home, went to the backyard a...

Thanks for the love. Yes, we're watching the eyes. She came from an area that had a lot of dust and wind, lots of tearing from then to about a week ago. However, very little now. Vet says some mild entropian, but appears she will grow out of it. Fingers crossed. Both FengHuang and ShenLung grew out ...

Re: Chow Chows and cats

For us with ShenLung, if the cat hisses, then it's on like Donkey Kong! He was born into a kennel with cats, has had them around, but that hiss thing sets a switch off in his head. He has snatched a few off the top of an 8' foot fence, and chased a few down. FengHuang never cared one way or the othe...

Hehe. Birds only eat here when bears are inside or out for walks. Those that don't comply rarely take off again. Big wild turkeys have been expanding in the area and its just a matter of time before they are added to the long list of accomplishments. ;)

Re: BSL up in NC

I can't understand why they just don't put the laws in effect to punish stupid people. It would solve all these issues. Yes a chow looks like as cudky as a teddy bear, no a chow isn't interested in your attempts to grope. If we were to substitute 'chow' for child, we would not be trying to 'save' th...
