Re: Entropion
FuShiLu had it bad. Surgery corrected it easily. How she looked returning home made us cry. But she is wonderful now and only had a mild infection that left her left eye with reduced night vision. After a few months the hair was back, new hair around the eyes and the skin darkened to help with seein...

Re: Car Rides
Start early and often. Every single one of ours loves (loved) car rides, even 15-19 hours to vacation on the ocean. They love me the ocean. While in motion they sleep. Stop the car they wake and wonder if they get to pee and meet new friends.

Re: Does Your Chow "Hunt"?
As for swimming.... Ours took awhile but once they realized it was possible, they took to it. They really, really like the ocean, probably due to the saltwater extra buoyancy. ShenLung also likes to get out to water about shoulder height and start digging. I mean 20 minutes of digging. It's amazing ...

Re: Aggression or normal Chow behavior?
Sounds head shy. ShenLung has been like that for eight years. He likes people, at a distance. He'll duck or walk away and even verbally warn as necessary, even slide his teeth along a persons skin to back up the threat when they don't listen. No one has pushed him further. He does select a few peopl...

Re: Does Your Chow "Hunt"?
Oh in part your correct, depending how they are raised. Ours have a long and successful hunting list of trophies. If it's between fox and mouse size, ground or air (sometimes water), it's good. They don't like retrieving sticks or balls much, but your bring a fuzzy, furry, scaly, feathered critter w...

Re: Biting training techniques
Yup, normal, especially without a sister or brother to abuse. Depending on growth it may also be needed to help teeth align. However to keep things positive, a simple scolding is good. Offer your hand, do not yank it away. Your baby must learn the amount of pressure that relates to play vs pain and ...

Re: Chow puppy and swimming pool
Hehe, all ours swim fine. Didn't like water much when young but at varying ages, creeks and lakes became fun. Then the ocean was the rage. ShenLung is a force of nature against waves, they just don't seem to affect him, very entertaining.

Fostering a Chow ;)
Thought we would share. We recently made it through the process to foster Chows through Merlins Hope Rescue after they were referred by a friend. And as luck would have it a Chow in need of fostering arrived a couple days later. ;) We don't know all the history, but other than needing better health,...

No reason they can't. Just depends on you. However why not another Chow? Then they can play rough together.

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
All sounds good, you can use what we are suggesting all the time, even in the house to control things. ;) Just so we can possibly help ward off another issue - no treats/rewards. Chow's are super intelligent and this gives the wrong idea. We have never used this approach as we see too often over the...

5 feet or longer. You want to be able to step on it without getting excited. We used 5 feet but some have had 10 feet just for the variations in control.

Some like the knot. Thicker seems to be another preference people like and a rough fibre for better friction. Just let it drag behind you. You'll both get the hang of things very quickly.

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
You want the longer rope so that your not in a rush to step on it and miss. If Walter got to flat out speed a 12 yr old could step on it without effort. Walter would just stop. No harm to anyone. If he remains excited, walk up the tope to the leash until he calms down. Once he is calm he will sit or...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
OK, first off it's not Walter. As for eating, try some Peptobismal, ShenLung had tummy issues for years and this helped him stay regular. At eight he rarely asks for pink lips anymore. ;) Leash. Any kind. Collar, whatever. Now add a 1-2 inch thick length of rope that will drag behind you several fee...

Re: need a defenite answer :(
Well an answer might be good, we have had both. FengHuang was a smooth and ShenLung a rough but it took him 8 years to grow his mane. FuShiLu is also rough. We have no preference each is wonderful in a unique way.

Yup, good for licking to keep cool but not drinking! ShenLung has learnt this, FuShiLU learnt this year, she puked up 2 litres of water, then ran outside and explosive liquid sprayed poop all over the neighbours camper trailer. It was awesome! NOT!!!!!! She then blamed us for poisoning her and would...

Re: Chronic Hot Spots
We have found that grooming and bathing sorts this out quite well. ShenLung has had a few over the years and it got real bad for awhile until we changed the regimen. One key thing we noticed, after adding some Epsom salts to the baths, this was drastically reduced to almost zero and boy were the coa...
