Re: Head Collar
This has been kinda interesting. First, chows are smart, like a politician. (I hope that doesn't come across as an insult, especially this soon after the election) Chows can read people, which is why Malachi frustrates Kitty (wife). I can pull out the harnesses, and my two are like kids after eating...

This doesn't have a thing to do with chows, but this weekend there was a formal wedding ceremony for my son and his bride. They had gotten married at the county clerk's office when Stephen's job relocated him from Cincinnati to Charlotte, and Courtney joined him in Charlotte. I haven't downloaded ph...

Re: When your chow gets wet
Cherriemater, that sounds like my two. If it is raining, I have to let Ursa out the porch door so she can stand by the doggie door and pick the time when she wants to dash out. She will just get off the pavers to go, then dash back in. Malachi will saunter out the breezeway door across the deck and ...

Re: Chow treats and training
NanouetJon is right. Training is a full time event. You should have your dog sit or respond to other commands throughout the day. Mine are supposed to sit before I open the door, put down the food bowl, and in other instances. You should establish a routine to make following commands a part of the d...

Re: Malachi and his mother
He has come up with another one. This morning he went part way down the stairs, trying to stay hidden (like something that big can hide) to see if Kitty was going to the breezeway door. It looked like he wasn't coming down until he knew she was going to open the door for him. As soon as she reached ...

Malachi and his mother
This probably should be posted under the discussion of how smart chows are. Before the dogs come in at night, Kitty cleans their feet. Ursa and the terriers just get a little swipe with a wet rag. Ursa tries to be dainty and not get her feet dirty. The boys, Bit and Malachi have to run around the ya...

chows as sloppy drinkers
I know this topic has been discussed before. I have discovered that people are not the only one that chows are sloppy drinkers. In the kitchen, we have a large round drinkwell fountain. We got it for the cats, but the chows seem to like it too. Ursa and Malachi had just both gotten a drink, and Yoda...

Re: A Run for My Money!
Got to agree with Rory's Dad. That selective hearing can occur at any time. Ursa is very good, and Malachi is good with obeying commands. BUT, if Ursa see a bird or a squirrel, all bets are off. As soon as she starts that high pitched yip about what she saw, all other thoughts are gone.

I know this is a new experience for everyone up in the region. You have to fill up all your vehicles prior to the storm. The boat fuel lines with the squeeze bulb are great to have to transfer fuel from vehicles to vehicles. Been there, done that. Generators are a fact of life down here. Filling you...

I think the baby gates are a good idea. I feel that the main issue is keeping them separated for some time while they adjust. They will adjust, but it will take time.

Y'all, if you are in the effected area, be prepared. You will need food and water for a minimum of three days. You also need to fill the tanks on your vehicles now. Expect a rerun of Irene. It is indeed better to be safe than sorry.

Hurricane Sandy
I know that kitten1426 is in NJ and getting ready for the storm. I hope everyone is paying attention to the weather reports. If you live in a location subject to flooding, EVACUATE. I have spent most of my life playing the hurricane "game" and I know that flooding is no joke. If the storm ...

Re: why do people think chows are one of the most dangerous
@PorschaLei, you can work with your girl and help her adjust to people. Ursa was very withdrawn and afraid of just about everything when I first got her. I take her places and let her see people, places and things. I always try to make it at her pace, so that if she doesn't want to participate in th...

Re: at what age do chow chows become protective and territor
Well, I don't know what my two do when we are away, but they guard the property and alert to anything that they consider not normal. Malachi wants to get close enough to smell you all over to verify your identification. Of course, he comes running at you like a locomotive barking all the while, so i...

Re: Does your Chows get along with cats?
Kitty (wife) wants every one to know that chase is a big game to be played, and it is not the game everyone imagines. Yoda, the kitten raised by my chows, likes to chase the dogs. The chows will only get up and move, so they are not that much fun, but are little dogs, which are more matched in size,...

I agree with Chowpups.
My two have demonstrated to people that don't have favorable opinions of chows that chows can be friendly, well behaved dogs. Has your mother-in-law had a bad experience with a chow?Your mother inlaw might come around too if she sees your chow behaving.

Re: Lola being dirty on furnitute
Lola is sending a message that she is displeased with the current situation. You have gotten the message, now you have to find out what specifically she is protesting. If it is not being allowed up stairs with you, which it currently appears to be the issue, why not put her on a short leash and take...

Re: why do people think chows are one of the most dangerous
Well, I am sitting with two chows beside me right now. If I had my sox off, I would probably have feet viciously attacked by a couple of purple tongues. :) From what I have observed with Ursa, my female, is that chows do need additional help with socialization. She had not been socialized or handled...

One thing to check for is thyroid levels. Ursa lost a lot of hair, and we found out that she had low thyroid levels.
