Re: Pay Groomer from hell who refused payment?
From a groomer, I would say she is bad news and to stay away. But, in her defense, she was right about the washing then cutting. Unless you are shaving the dog all the way down, you really can't get a guard (plastic combs that go over blades that leave the hair longer than 1/2") through the hai...

Re: Has anyone shaved a badly matted chow before?
If you do it yourself, here is a list of items you need, including what clippers. You will only with the grain of the coat, against will take it extremely short. I am not sure how badly matted he is from your description, but I will give you two blade recommendations. I am a groomer, so I thought I ...

I guess I should have said, I use Vectra 3D also. It takes care of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. It is supposed to work faster than Advantage or Frontline. I have had no problems with it at all.

Re: Questions about neutering....
Do it. There is nothing to worry about. Neutering is the easiest surgery any dog will ever have. He will be groggy the first day, and back to his old self the next morning. You will need to just make sure he stays somewhat quiet for a few days and no licking the area. The younger they are neutered, ...

Re: Second Chow (rough coat this time) ... Grooming Advice?
I am a groomer and these are the tools I use and recommend. They are all available from www.petedge.com. Daily grooming is great and it sounds like you already have a routine, so adding a rough coat shouldn't be too difficult! Although, if you do your own bathing as well, you may want to also invest...

Re: Flea Medication
You must also treat your yard, any and all other pets, vacuum the house regularly (cut up a flea collar and put it in the vacuum bag), wash all bedding. If you don't do all this, as well as keeping up on flea preventative, you will never get rid of them. A bad infestation can take months to fully ge...

Best Detangling spray! The STUFF for dogs---from a groomer!
I use this product at work, and I will tell you it works miracles! Not only is great for detangling, but it also helps loosen undercoat! I would be lost with out it, and I'm sure I would have a lot more unhappy customers too! It is hypo allergenic, buut has a slight smell when first sprayed, but no ...

I can't wait to meet Red tomorrow! Cash will be the only one with a Chow-less heritage, but I don't think he cares.

Ok, here is the master list, check back often if there is not currently one listed in your area. I update these as I get more replies. I am trying to keep them organized alphabetically by state. For those who haven't seen the original thread: I am a groomer and I have requested Chow friendly groomer...

Re: Chow's Tail (help)
Frisco did that once and my mom freaked out and rushed him to the vet thinking his tail was broke or something. $100+ emergency vet bill later, we found out nothing was wrong and it was back to normal the next day.
I have seen Carter's tail down once and it was only for a short time.

Maybe a raised water bowl? If they didn't have to lean down so far, they may be less likely to get their mane wet. Or, they could wear bandannas as "bibs"

Re: seat belt
I use this type for Carter and Cash. I don't use it much on Carter anymore since we have now gotten him trained to not jump out of the car until we tell him too. It's a harness with an adjustable clip on attachment that buckles right into the seat belt clip. I use it alot more on Cash because he has...

Re: jump in the car
I don't really have any suggestions, but Frisco used to think anytime my car door opened that he got to go somewhere (mine was the only car he ever really rode in). Then he would jump and refuse to come out. We used to have to chase him to back and forth from the front to the back. Carter on the oth...

Chow sighting- Beverly Hills Groomer
Beverly Hills Groomer, with the winner of last year's Groomer Has It, groomed a Chow on his show today. It was the actress that played the mom on Moesha (Sheri Lee something I think). She has a 13 yr old red Chow named Shaka. very pretty, didn't look anywhere near 13 yrs old.

Re: Wondering what y'all thought?
It is very possible that it could be early arthritis or just an older dog getting stiff. I would highly recommend starting her on a daily joint supplement. You want it to include Glucosamine, Chondriton, and MSM. Frisco was on it for years and it definitely helped him last longer all those years. It...
