Tried LOTS of snacks, here's what my Chows like

Very, very picky, but they still like Milk Bones, but Max will only eat the light colored ones, Zeena doesn't care what flavor it is, she eats them like that. Eight flavors. Also, I don't know if it's available to everyone, EVO snacks. Comes in a green plastic bag and has no grains, they like that o...

Licking his paws nonstop

Isn't there some bug that get in between the toes? Mites? Max is licking his paws big time and won't stop. I'm in Tucson, AZ and there's bugs galore down here. I'm sure someone out there knows of what bug that can get between the toes of a dog. I've looked for fleas in his skin but I have not seen a...

Chows Should Be Used For Dog Food Testing

Think about it, I think Chows are the pickiest dogs in the world when it comes to food. These companies that "think" that a dog will like this snack or that snack should hire Chows to let them know what is good and what is not. When I have a piece of chocolate, Max is all over me and wants...

Chow and Gordon Setter Story

We had a female Gordon Setter, Peanuts, who was about 3 yrs. old at the time and a high strung dog when we got our first Chow pup, Chevy. It seemed okay at the time with Chevy getting along with Peanuts, but when Chevy was about 6 months old he made the mistake of eating out of Peanuts bowl. Peanuts...

Re: unusual chow behavior

I'm very sorry that the relationship between your grandfather and Ming dissolved like that. Your grandfather was only trying to help. But, from this experience, it can tell all Chow owners that if your Chow needs a very unpleasant treatment, don't do it yourself but let a vet do it, that way your Ch...

Re: Tippsy was attacked tonight...

Glad she is alright. Thank God for super duper Chow fur. It's a protection for them against the elements and also dogs that are apparently unsupervised. People don't realize when you take on the care of a dog that means just that, CARE and SUPERVISON and CONTROL of that dog. Boneheaded people.

Re: the spring shed

Let us not forget the EARS. They shed too. Little tiny pieces of hair that needs to be brushed out. I pick a lot of them out with my fingers. Said it before, and I'll say it again, Chows have enough hair for FIVE DOGS. That's why if you are alone and freezing to death, you'd better have your Chow to...

Try bringing small pieces of chicken with you and when he starts running, you run the other way and makes some yelps to get his attention. When he comes up to you, praise him and give him a piece of chicken.

Sibling Rivalry, Alive and Well

HI Everyone, As a lot of you know, I have a big male Chow, Max, 75 lbs. plus and his half sister, Zeena, 55 lbs. I have to break up fights at least twice a week. And it isn't Max starting them, it's Zeena. She seems to want ALL the attention and Max can't have any. Max may be a lot bigger than her, ...

Anybody seen the movie, "Hachi" yet?

To all Chow lovers and dog lovers, this movie will really get to you heart. It is based on a true story about an Akita, Japenese dog, and his owner. Richard Gere stars in this. If you see it, make sure you have your Kleenex at hand. It truly shows what I've already said before, you can't fathom the ...

Re: boy oh boy....dog fight this a.m.

Chows are a long ways from being sissies. They're built rugged and they play rough and fight rough. When my two get into it, I show them the flat of a broom to separate them, no hitting, just separating them, and push the flat of the broom towards the aggressive one and keep it up until they settle ...

Re: hair loss.

Totally normal for Chows to shed clumps. They have enough hair for five dogs, they won't go bald unless your Chow does have a serious problem. My Chows are constantly shedding. You're picking up hair all day and yet they still look like they have enough hair for five dogs. I don't think you'll ever ...

I am convinced after having Chows for 15 years, when they do that Ha sound, it means Hi. They do it with their breath. But, I have seen it over and over again, they will do it when they come into the room you are in. I think it's just too cool. But, they'll start that ha, ha, ha, also when they thin...

Re: Should my boys always be together?

I totally agree with Victory on everything from my personal experiences with my Chows. And I do believe they know when something is wrong with their pal. I do not separate my Chows, they do not like it all. It's the pack theory all the way. Buddies to the end.

Re: snow chows

I've had a Chow that would stretch on ice and think it's wonderful. Chows were made for the cold weather. I know that if I was lost in the cold, I'd want a Chow with me. (Some matches wouldn't hurt either) I think they could save your life since their temp. is around 101-102 and have the best fur co...

Re: Interested in a Chow - Need help.

I live in Tucson and have two Chows, one male 3, one female 2. They've never bitten anyone, but Zeena has nipped before, I have to watch her a little more closely around strangers. I've never worried about Max, he a neutered male. If you want a Chow that doesn't bark all the time, I suggest a male, ...

Establishing leadership in the home

This is only for the new Chow owners: I've done a lot of research on this subject a long time ago, and it came in handy especially with Max, who wanted to be the big boss of the home even when he was only 5 months old. He would get aggressive, testing his grounds, and nipping and pushing forward on ...

Chow thing, SNORTING on your windows

Our windows are low to the floor, about 24 inches and when my Chows get concerned about some activity outside at night, they'll stand up on the window sill and snort and snort. So the window has to be cleaned every day from Chow snorting. Sound familiar to anyone out there?

Re: heavy breathing and panting

Sometimes panting is just a lot of energy they need to burn off or anxiety. Also, if you keep a very warm house, Chows aren't able to handle too much heat since they have a fur coat that can handle zero. That was my biggest problem coming to Tucson in July, was keeping my Chows cool. As far as cold ...

A heavy choke chain collar. Properly fitted, it should have 2" extra when place on the dog, but make the collar isn't sitting on top of the hair. That's the only one that has worked for me. They have light ones and heavy ones. I've had Max wriggle out of a webbed collar. I've had Zeena snap a c...

Max was stung by a bee, eyes swelled

Max was stung Friday afternoon by a bee above his right eyes. I made sure the stinger was out and gave him a Benadryl. His eyelids swelled and he kept rubbing his muzzle because it probably itched. He seems to be doing better. In a few hours I gave him one more Benadryl. His swelling has gone down a...

I mean that with all my heart. I left today for an errand and was gone 1 1/2 hours and yet when I got back Zeena acted like I had been gone for a week. My vet used a heavy duty leather muzzle on Max AND I had to hold strap in place and hold Max down to get blood tests. He was up on the table and as I held him down, he raised his big head up and almost knocked me out. The vet was worried about me if I was alright. Max is 75 lbs. and if he doesn't wa...
