Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Oh ok! Good to know. And by the way, in the past (I think when Walter was 5 months old; he's 10 months now) I've made the accident of having him trimmed to a lion cut form which means that the hair in his body seemed to close to being shaved. I didn't know that it is very important not to do that wi...

Re: Bed for chows

Yeah, I'm skeptical of buying one because he chews on just about everything.

He is a flopper. I always heard a thudding sound when he lies down. What happens if he bangs up an elbow or knee by doing this?

Re: Walter was about to vomit when I accidentally stopped it

Ok, but if there's really a problem in his stomach (other than the suspected air pocket) he will eventually throw it up, right?

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Ok. Regarding the stray beard, what I actually mean are those black string of hairs (just like in cats) that grow out of their noses and sometimes are growing on the face itself. What do you call those anyway?

Bed for chows

Is it recommended to buy our dogs a small bed when they sleep? Walter seems to be very happy to just lie down in the floor, at least that's what he's used to. When we put him in the bed, he lies down for a few minutes, gets up, and gets very curious to the new cushion-like environment as expected. I...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

If I bring Walter to a professional groomer, what do I need to tell him specifically? Should I just require a "trim" on Walter's coat? Do we need to cut some of the stray "beard" that he has in his face?

Re: Walter was about to vomit when I accidentally stopped it

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was actually waiting for him to vomit but he never did. I guess I need not worry then and I'm glad it was just out of my paranoia. In the past (in his 10 months of his life), he already vomited three times because of the Nylabone toy chunks he ingested and that got me wo...

Walter was about to vomit when I accidentally stopped it

Walter was in my room (in a carpet) earlier when he suddenly did the heaving action (muscle contraction) as a symptom before he vomits. He did this in the past for a few times already so I know. Knowing that he is in the carpet, I immediately carried him and brought him outside with the assumption t...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

I still don't understand Walter. As long he sees a female dog, he really tries hump her even though she is not in heat. He tries to get over her and do the thing. I thought male dogs would only be in heat if the female dog is in heat also.

Yup, thanks. Although, he'll definitely see the cloth and will be extra curious about it as expected, lol.

Re: Chow Chow weight

Ok. Is there any reason why Walter isn't excited about his kibble? Do I need to add raw food just like you do? When he was a 3-5 months, he was also a gulper. I'm not sure what happened to him why he's this way now. Like I said, I already changed his food and tried all sorts of things. At least, he'...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Do we have to completely dry him out? Would a regular electric fan work? So your tags are located on the top of his neck? How the Chip ID's work? Are they installed inside a Chow's body or something? In case Walter gets lost (knock on wood), I'm not really sure we'll be able to track him knowing how...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Ok. I was watching youtube videos and was told about those hotspots. Yes, I would just need to invest some time to promote tangle prevention in the future. I'm not sure if it's ok but I usually use a mini blower like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BZCOKK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s0...

Re: Chow Chow weight

I understand. I do feel that he is not underweight. He doesn't have any problems as he is very active as well. I would've gotten the puppy variant of TOTW but it isn't really avaialble here. Based on their website, all of their food variants are for "all life stages" which defeats the purp...

Re: Chow Chow weight

That makes sense. My last visit with the vet was around 2 months ago and he said that Walter's not underweight but yes he is on the smaller side of the scale. I do feel his ribs but I think he's not too boney (I'm just not sure how to determine this). I haven't seen Walter's parents when I bought hi...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Thanks. Yes, they're maintenance is really high alright! I hope he haven't developed any hotspots yet due to these tangles being there for a long time now (due to my not being aware of proper grooming).

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

@m_saade

Oh you mean the comb and not the pin brush, right? Yes, I'll buy a slicker brush tomorrow and hopefully that will remove all tangles.

Thanks.

Chow Chow weight

Walter is at 9 months and he just weighs 14Kg. He has been at 14Kg for a few months now. When he was 3 months and growing up to around 7 months, he increases weight very fast (around 2Kg every 2 weeks) but now it seems to have stopped. At around 7 months, he started not liking his kibble so I switch...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

I just bought a comb that is similar to the one pictured above and I'm having a hard time using it with Walter's tangles. I think he has tough tangles already because he isn't groomed very much. In his 9 months of life, he was just groomed once and I only use the pin brush that I have a few days a w...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Ok. What I just don't understand with the two finger method of measuring is why do you use two fingers to measure the extra space? I mean, you're measuring the width of a finger as an indication of much extra space you want between the collar and the dog. The width of one finger is the same as the w...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Ok. So the pin brush I have can already be used for daily maintenance of the top coat, right? Additionally, will the slicker brush be used for daily maintenance of the under coat and top coat also? And for tangle removal, should I use both slicker brush and comb? As for the least-ridged round collar...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

That makes sense. I would assume that if I leave the leash on Walter though, he will start on biting and eventually destroy it (which he did on his first few leashes when he was a little puppy). Now if you step on the leash, will he still not be able to nip the back of your feet? He still can reach ...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

Since we've gone to puppy training session, his attitude really improved. Although his leash pulling behavior is still there, I'm waiting for the head collar to arrive and see if that makes a difference. My concern now is his nipping behavior. It did improve also but when he wants to potty outside h...
