Re: female chow behavior she was born in feb

I am not anti breeding in general, but I do promote responsible breeding. (for example, not breeding dogs because 'they're cute' or the owners simply want puppies for the heck of it. I love my breed and by bringing carelessly bred dogs, you can get health and temperament issues. That said, both dogs...

Re: Chow Chow in heat

In addition to making sure both dogs have their health clearances (which involves certification from OFA as well as brucellosis testing and evaluating why you want to breed (are they both good examples of the breed...the breed is already riddled with BYBs), a change in heat cycles could mean health ...

Re: petco mistakenly SHAVED my chow chow!

Nothing will make the hair grow faster, although a good diet leads to good skin and coat. It will, most likely, grow back fine. My late Legend did have to be shaved once in his life due to a severe skin issue we had to treat, but which was made difficult with his heavy coat. He did regrow his coat f...

Re: Chow chow balding from harness

For my male, who has a rough coat, we use a rolled leather collar with good results.

I don't use harnesses, but make sure that if you are (and it goes for collar OR harness) that it's kept snug. If it's too loose it will move around and create more coat issues and rubbing

Re: Beware of what Anesthetic your Vet gives your dog.

Propofol is actually a pretty safe injectable sedative. I used it on my late Chow for both of his eye surgeries because he had an issue with an anesthetic before (and since we weren't sure if it was the anesthetic or the injectable sedative that was the issue, we were playing it safe). It's always c...

Re: worried about my chow's throat

A dog's coat should not really mildew from a week or so of wearing a cone collar, even with moisture accumulating. (and my late Chow was notorious for getting skin fold infections on his neck, so I'm well aware of the moisture/ick factor) and it certainly should not be enough to turn the coat a diff...

Re: different types of chows

No one could give me an answer why American Chow Chows look so much different than European Chow Chows. ] It doesn't really have to do with American vs European lines..there are many Chows from American lines who have the blockier muzzles. It has more to do with what the breeder was focusing on...i...

Re: IS THIS A CHOW?

Looks like a Chow mix to me..the ears seem a bit too large and the muzzle is pretty thin and pointy.

As a note, working at a vet where a few people have done them, I've yet to see a DNA test come close to being accurate

Re: need comments on my new chow pup (xbreed)

Vaccines have nothing to do with being able to bathe your puppy. Vaccines protect against disease...parvo isn't found in the bathwater  That is, unless you were going to a groomer, in which case they'd be required to be fully vaccinated. But as far as baths at home, you should be fine. Don't o...

Re: New Puppy, Best Natural Food?

Aesop ate Solid Gold Wolf Cub and did great. We started Goose on it and, while she did have good digestion, she apparently requires lower calcium and phosphorous levels in her food as she had some odd blood test results. (Note: this is a "her" issue, not a "food" issue...the food...

Re: Let us discuss food

We usually feed our adult dogs Taste of the Wild. Not a fan of corn or other fillers and it's one of the very few foods Aesop will eat. Everyone does great on it..good skin, coat and digestion. The puppy eats Castor and Pollux Natural Ultramix. Currently she cannot handle high calcium levels so we'r...

I would stand up and walk away/leave the room when he mouths. Mouth on skin= end of fun and attention. It usually doesn't take long for pups to pick that up

I'm not sure if they'll come up now that your pup is 12 weeks. Someone with more experience could probably shed more light on that. Trimming some hair on the ears might help to take some weight off. Otherwise, it will just be a cosmetic issue. I'm sure your pup is still quite cute :) Did both parent...

Re: Nukka - New Chow in the famly

We have multiple dogs and while there is a 'top dog', so to speak, in the dog group, the humans are the ones who truly control resources, etc. Dogs do not get to dictate who I do and do not pet, or which pet approaches me. That behavior would earn a time out. I don't feed according to "rank&quo...

Re: No apartments will have us!

Eurasier is an option too  That said, we've had better luck renting houses than apartments. And we've always just called our Chows by the proper breed name when we've been asked what type of dog we have. Do research condos carefully..some condo communities are just as strict about breed type a...

Re: Question before buying Chow

I have to disagree with large dogs being unsuited to apartment life. After all, how many dogs do laps in their homes? (a zoom once in awhile notwithstanding) As long as an owner is open to offering adequate exercise, dogs of all sizes do quite well in apartments. Larger cities are full of happy dogs...

Re: Suki's in season - how long will it last?

Are you certain she's in season? Females get a bloody vaginal discharge during their season, but it generally doesn't lead to bloody urine. This is not to say there cannot be intermingling during urination, but I would take her to a vet just to be certain. You don't want to miss a bladder infection.

Aesop is 74 lbs.

Rather than go by weight in telling if a dog is too heavy or too thin, I always feel through the fluff. I like to feel ribs slightly. I adjust food going by that
