Re: Chow Wont Drink Out Of Bowl?
What is her water bowl made from? Both plastic and some ceramics get moldy, you can't see it, but she can smell it. I prefer steel ones myself, I can wash them really well and make sure to remove any scum or bacteria that accumulates from them drinking, like the build up your own toothbrush can hide...

Re: Borscht Being Aggressive towards Charlie
Never hit a chow, ever. And don't try scaring her, she'll only become afraid of you and in the end worse. Start NILF immedieatly, also timeouts, when she completely loses it, put her in a time out, 20minutes minimum where she is not a part of the family at all, let him be with you. Ignore her. she'l...

Re: Amber came home on Thursday
Congrats on the new addition. She is a cutie. I like the first picture where they are laying down and their paws are just touching. I'm sure they will bond very tightly soon and be best pals. It is amazing how chows bond with each other and take care of each other. I love watching my two just be tog...

Re: What age do I feed my chow adult food and what kind?
1 year is usually the best to start feeding adult food. It should take a month or more to fully transisition him to adult food, so he'll be 13-14 months before he is on adult food. It is importand to feed your chow a high quality puppy food and a high quality adult food, which means no, corn, wheat,...

Re: What does your Chow eat?
My chows eat about 3 and a half cups of food per day. They eat Innova most times, red meat formula as my boy is also allergic to chicken. My girl is gaining a little weight but she's always been a bit thin so she could do it. She's a svelte thing at 40-45 lbs. My boy is a little guy too, and weights...

Re: Zoe will not eat her dog food...
Yep, what Judy said. They are picky eaters, but no canine will starve itself. Also chows are sometimes just not hungry, they eat just what they need for the time then stop. Most dogs are seriously over weight these days, but a chow that eats just enough will not be over weight. And never ever give y...

Re: How to take a control of my chow?
A lot of chows are horrible off leash, because of as Jess said their independent streak. Also your girl is at the age when they become VERY independent, the terrible "teens" for dogs begin at about 8 or 9 months and last until they are a year to 14 months old. This is the time when you hav...

Re: Life just keeps getting harder
I started the new job today. First six days is all training. It was really good and pretty easy to pick up. I think I'm going to like this. Even if I'm not real thrilled with the commute at the moment. But I'll get used to it, (walking and buses, YUCK). Thanks 612guy. I might someday need help with ...

Re: First time owner questions
NILF, and walking on a leash should be started ASAP. He is plenty old enough. If you wait until he's six months old he'll be a monster. And he's going to fight the leash at first it is normal. You just want to coax him along, carry a favorite toy or a treat in your hand and coax him with it, walk hi...

Re: Life just keeps getting harder
Well.............. After my big announcment and all my excitment. That job didn't materialize. I would have been working IT support for a retail chain. I think they didn't do as well as they wanted during the holiday season, and then the whole "fiscal cliff" thing went on, and now we have ...

Re: Be careful in the snow!
She could have pulled a muscle, or sprained a joint. yep they do that just like we do. I always keep mine on a tight lead the first couple of times it ices over, they can seriously damage a knee if they twist it during a fall on ice, (again just like a human) Also don't cut their nails in the winter...

Re: Random question
Open faced means just what you described; the chows that are in this catagory don't have the excessive wrinkles that some do, in fact they may not have any wrinkles around their muzzles, they will have the typical chow "scowl" caused by the line in the front of their foreheads and the addi...

Your story reminded me of my Ming. When I went to a convention during the day, a friend volunteered to go by and take him for a walk. Ming wasn't cooperative at all, and refused to allow her to put on his leash and collar. But a while later I was in the hospital for a week and another friend said sh...

Re: Growing hair!
Your groomer is wrong I think, most chows have full adult coats by 1 year, especially if there is a shedding season in there. And as Tippy's Mom said it is the collar that is keeping the fur around the neck from growing. My two wear rolled braided nylon collars, (just like the leather ones only nylo...

Puppies have a very short attention span, so she probably forgets where her toys are and the slippers and couch are near so...When my first chow was a puppy, he belonged to my mom and they found this little rubber toy for him, it was shaped like a baby pacifer, but it was all green rubber and in the...

Re: First time chow/dog owner...
She is adorable. Time outs are perfect, since a lot of that biting comes from over excitment anyway, letting her chill is the best way to teach her. Biting all kinds of things is also very normal, even human babies will put everything into their mouths, puppies do it as well. make sure she has lots ...

Re: Carrot K9 video
Our boys LOVED them when they were pups. I used to give them shavings but they would come out both ends, so we gave up on them. Occasionally, when I'm eating the baby ones, they'll ask for one ... but just like D'lion ... then end up disappearing (and then I find them moldy later). Silly boys! The ...

I only had to wait a week or so for Dreamdancer as he was a little over 6weeks old when I saw him on WTCR's rescue. I'm not sure I can stand waiting longer than that.
He is a cutey, and growing well. Good to see him being handled and that he's so calm. Good early socialization.

Re: My little chow puppy has ectropium of the eyelid
I think that the vet is talking about doing an eyelid tack, if it's only going to take 15 minutes. This means that no cutting of the eyelid will take place, they are only going to suture the eyelid so it doesn't curl on to the eye and scratch it. This is a fairly common procedure in a young puppy wi...

Oceans--purulent means infected and oozing pus. Sounds like pyometra. Which is quite serious, and they normally remove the uterus for it.
I hope the surgery went well.

Re: Sudden aggression towards guest
You state that when he was young he was hit by a car and was injured. Dogs hit by cars sometimes suffer closed head brain injuries just like a person can. These injuries are often times missed, but can result especially later in life in seemingly unprovoked aggression. I would have him examined for ...

A chow out of control? No a chow that was not correctly trained and still hasn't been. A chow that only stops biting YOU because she is afraid of you...what happens when she is around someone else and you're not there? At some point this chow is going to bite and it's going to be serious. The proper...
