Chance used it for a giant drinking bowl at first. Then I turned my back and heard a splash! Have you added any new pictures of your gorgeous pup?Peterbilt wrote:Handsome boy! I am going to buy my little boy a pool soon.

Re: Our New Puppy
A busy morning working in the yard. I would sweep up leaves and Chance would attack the pile and the broom. This could have continued all day.... But, I got wise and pulled out an old kiddie pool. This is going to be a hot summer and we will probably be going through several of these before winter h...

Re: How much walking is too much walking?
Along with the other good comments, I also try to keep in mind that their growth plates are not fully developed. Too much exercise at a young age can cause damage. I read somewhere (???) that a puppy should get five minutes of exercise for every month of age... twice a day. A 4 month old puppy would...

Re: Pseudopregnancy..
Although not a Chow, my female rottweiler has false pregnancies with every heat. Unfortunately every heat cycle brings on worse symptoms. We decided after this last cycle that she should be spayed. Watching her nesting, pushing squeaky toys up to her teats to nurse, snarking at the other dogs for ge...

Re: Handler Classes
Thanks for the tips. Chance seems to do better on the table than on the ground for the examination. He is less fidgety and I have more control up on the table. Perhaps this is because that is what we practice the most. He doesn't have a problem with the ramp, but one judge wanted to look him over on...

Re: Our New Puppy
I love reading back through past topics and catching up on Rory and Amber stories... It is fun to similarities and differences in each others' pups. When I was looking for a chow puppy I really wanted one that was physically sound..... with a solid temperament..... I am very happy to say that Chance...

Re: Handler Classes
Handler classes are the best investment I could be making at this point! What I have learned so far was really helpful this weekend. Now that we have our first show under us, I have a better understanding of what areas we need work on. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y166/proudcavmom/Day1.jpg Day o...

Re: Our New Puppy
We are having the time of our lives with this puppy! Chance and our two rottweilers are now the best of friends. I do have to separate them at meal time because he has absolutely no respect for boundaries and sees nothing wrong with helping himself to their bowls. I am so lucky to be able to ...

Re: potty training and work :/
Our vet explained that he was much more concerned about the dangers of missing an important time in their early life to socialize than he was afraid of the puppy catching a disease. Although we exercised basic cautions, our pup was out and about with us from day one. Like others have mentioned, we a...

Dreamland's Intrepid Spirit ~ aka "Chance" is from Dreamland Kennel in Lubbock, TX. Which is perfect for us because we already speak Texan. :D (a silly reference to Ledy speaking Russian) We are having a blast with this little guy. Although we have had several chows over the years, this is...

What is that?
It is fun having a dog breed that many people do not recognize. Over and over during the week we are asked, "What is that?" Yesterday a new FedEx guy came by. He cocked his head to one side and said (in a thick African accent)"No, no, no... it tis illegal to keep bears as pets." ...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y166/proudcavmom/Chance14weeks.jpg Chance ~ 14 weeks. Snapped this picture before heading to class last night. Week two we had a bit more focus. He self stacks fairly well which is good because when I move his feet he thinks it is a game and tries to grab my hand. (...

Handler Classes
Chance, now 13 weeks old, and I went to our first conformation class last night. We have a really great instructor who took the time to explain many things to us. One on one time, showing me how to line him up, correct stance, ... we are now working on getting him to remain standing when I back away...

Re: Why why why do my dogs enjoy giving me heart attacks?
Oh My Goodness... that would have been so frightening. Dixie is a very smart girl. I had a heart in throat moment several years back. My 5 month old puppy darted out past me and took off out of the yard. It was dark out and beginning to rain. I stepped back in the house to yell for my husband to com...

Re: The “perfect” walk?
I do have a question for Cindy J, what bayou are they going to drag you off into? I am over here in Gulfport, MS, and it doesn't sound like you could be too far away. I am outside of Houston. We live far enough outside the city limits that they have not concreted the banks. It is great walking the ...

Re: The “perfect” walk?
I teach a heel position and and use it in very short increments. An actual heel with focus on me when walking is strenuous on their necks and rather tedious. But it is a nice command to incorporate when crossing the street. A short heel, then a release for "free" walking and exploring on t...

Re: Going out at night.
Something else to ponder: Is there a female in heat in the neighborhood? My male wants out at all hours of the night when the neighbor's pittie is in heat. I ignore him for the most part. If he becomes insistent I put him on a leash, even though our yard is fenced, and walk him around the yard. As s...

Blow dryer
I gave Chance his first bath at our house as he has been romping in the mud. He was less than thrilled, but it wasn't too bad for a first. The dryer was a completely different experience. He will let me towel dry him to my heart's content, seems to enjoy the full body rub-down. But we was all over t...

Re: Our New Puppy
Thanks for the additional tips. Yesterday I gave him his first bath at our house. Chance was less than thrilled. He was even less thrilled with the dryer. But laid back in my arms while I clipped his nails. I only had to pause occasionally to rub his fat belly. I forgot just how much fun a chow chow...

Thanks for the additional tips. I have shown in the recent past, but was showing rottweilers. I have sat and watched other breeds, but look forward to watching many more competitions. Some of the items you mentioned I already have... others I will need to pick up in the very near future. I have a gr...
