Re: Sally's progress
Thank you Pinoy for sharing Sally's rescue story. In the midst of the horrendous abuse stories that sometimes hit the news, it's refreshing to be reminded that there are kind generous souls like yourself out there. So happy to see Sally's progress. Kudos!

Re: Really ticked off
Wow, what a sad story. I feel for your poor female who is seemingly always miserable. And, I feel for the poor breeding dogs and their pups on that chow chow farm. I only by chance have an adopted pure bred chow chow. This type of story is why I've always adopted from shelters. I know, I know, we do...

Re: Fostering an Intact Male - Help!
He is a handsome boy, love the expression on that second pic, don't you wonder what's in their heads = : You've probably considered a "pack walk" with you walking your female along with someone else walking Grizzly. & switching off. Has always worked for me & of course watch them c...

Re: Questions to ask, what to look for when getting a chow p
2 years ago, when I spotted Buddy2 on Petfinder.com,and adopted him, I thought he was a chow mix, except for the pure purple tongue, he does not look like the AKC chow chows. When we had DNA test done to see what else was in there, he proved to be 100% chow chow. He is the old fashioned, pre-designe...

Re: Buddy2, shelter chow, still afraid
quick afterthought - I am happy that he has finally started sleeping in the bedroom with the rest of the family. Took 2 years but these last few mornings I've woken to find him sleeping next to his doggie sister at the side of the bed, instead of in my dressing room next door. I've been inviting him...

Re: Buddy2, shelter chow, still afraid
Thanks CocoLeBear, good suggestions. This guy though is not at all food motivated and won't take treats under stress, ie at the vet or from a stranger. I will try a command or two though before I allow us to turn around and the collar sounds like a good try too. Thanks again!

my 48 lb 3 year old male Chow Chow gets 1 cup am and 1 cup pm Purina Pro Plan Salmon & Rice formula for sensitive stomach. He likes it and is doing well on it. Vet says his weight and coat are great and keep doing what we're doing. When I adopted him 2 years ago I started him on Wellness Core Gr...

Re: Can you train a chow chow to poo in the bathroom?
Oh boy, that's a tough situation.! I think the poor dog is probably getting really stressed out about having to do her business in the house. And I hate the thought of the poor girl needing to poo & not given the chance (as far as the dog can see) to relieve herself. Being shut up in a bathroom ...

Re: 3 Chow Chow females a recipe for disaster?
I would definitely not bring in another female. I hope that your two girls continue to be friends but - they are still very young, things may change. Judging by the girls I've had, I would not ask them to share a home with another girl. The boys I've had have been more mellow than the girls, allowin...

Re: Buddy2, shelter chow, still afraid
Thanks for your responses. We do start our neighborhood walks with our older arthritic chow mix, Suzy who is slow but has no fear. Doesn't matter if she is with us or has been dropped off (she can't go far), Buddy2 will startle, stop & turn. Not pleasant to have poor old Suzy heading up the stre...

Buddy2, shelter chow, still afraid
It's been 2 years since we adopted Buddy2 who had spent his first year in a shelter. In most ways, he has settled in really well but..... he is still afraid on walks. There are some places he knows, where he will walk comfortably, until he hears kids laughing or music or a door slam or - any number ...

I am so sorry for your loss. I usually visit the general forum and had not been to the health section for some time. I too had to put down an old chow mix (in Jan of 13) who I'd adopted when he was a pup. We had 15 very good years. Even though we had another younger chow mix girl in the family, Budd...

Re: CAN NOT KEEP YOGI
I do hope Yogi is still with you. My Chow Chow rescue is still adjusting. He trusts me and my husband now, after several months but is still afraid of anything going on out in my residential neighborhood, UPS truck, kid on skateboard, neighbor pulling out of garage. I agree that it's best not to for...

changing forehead part of maturing??
Buddy2 is now almost 2 1/2 and I've noticed in the last 2 - 3 months that his forehead has really changed. Where the hair used to stand up straight from just behind his eyes, making him look to have a really big forehead, there is now a flatness from over his eyes to just in front of his ears where ...

Re: Food for a chow
I got my first full bred Chow Chow a year ago, found him online as a 13 month old chow mix at a shelter. DNA proves he is full Chow. Anyway, he had unhealthy looking poos for several months until I tried Purina Pro Plan Salmon & Rice formula. May have been that it took him that long to be comfor...

Re: We reserved a baby! (pictures included)
Congratulations! In my experience, bringing in a new dog is very helpful in recovering from the loss of an old friend. I too waited only about a week after losing my 16 year old Chow mix Buddy before finding Buddy2 on Petfinders.com. I thought he was a chow mix as well but DNA testing proves otherwi...

Re: New Chow Mommy
My male Chow Chow spent the first 13 months in a shelter and had never been in a home when we brought him in to ours. It took him many months to adjust, still a work in progress. It probably helped that we already had an older dog in the house. I think he took some cues from her. He spent most of th...

Re: new member saying hi
Welcome! It does seem odd to be shedding now. My 2 year old male had a moderate coat blow out in early summer but since, I hardly get any hair in the brush while grooming. As long as the skin looks good, appetite & behaviour normal, I don't think I'd worry too much unless it doesn't resolve itse...

Re: Fighting Chows
boy, that's a tough one. I've had a boy and girl combo for almost 20 years, not the same dogs obviously. Lost a female to cancer, adopted another female. Male died of old age, got another male. I've always believed that the opposite *Censored Word* combo is best, less chance of fighting. My males ha...

Re: FOUND A CURE FOR MING'S STORM TERRORS?
My Lucy who went to doggy heaven a few years ago was always extremely anxious during storms until I heard that if you rub a dog down with a dryer sheet, it takes out the static and calms them. It worked for her!
