Re: Our chow Bear!

Congrats on your first Chow and welcome to the forum! I named my first Chow "Bear" also. He looked like a little bear cub as a pup, but little kids started to call him a black lion once he matured. Enjoy puppyhood and keep on taking photos & video.

Re: Is she the smallest chow ever??

I've been feeding my pup TOTW Pacific Stream (salmon) puppy kibble with about a teaspoon of chicken or turkey bits mixed into every cup. He's ~22 lbs. at 14 weeks and eats about 2.5 cups of kibble each day. A few days ago a trainer at puppy school suggested using cut up bits of Natural Balance lamb ...

...our chows wont move off our property even if there is another animal around don't get me wrong we are on them if they move tho...but they say practice makes perfect...lol.... Or as some coaches used to tell me, perfect practice makes perfect. The training techniques do count for something. You &...

Re: Smoothy with No Name

14 weeks old today. He received his 3rd set of DHPP yesterday and weighed 22 lbs. 6 oz. Some coarse, longer hair is starting to poke through the puppy fuzz. I know some believe it's too early, but he decided to climb up a flight of 12 steps when I wasn't looking. He was very pleased with himself, wi...

Re: Chows with NO leash...Dont try this at Home

Thanks for taking time to shoot the video. I gave this a try earlier today and my 14 week old pup seemed to catch on fairly quickly. I'll add it to his training regimen and introduce distractions gradually. What I remember with my previous Chow was that other dogs or animals tended to offer the bigg...

Re: Smoothy with No Name

So happy you finally got your little guy Drew. :) He is such a cutey and looks like a real character to boot. Have you thought of a name yet? Thanks, applebear...and thanks again for your off-list advice. I'm a bit late with this response here, so I think you already know by now his name is Thor. I...

Re: Chow nibbling on hind legs...

Congrats on the new baby! Mine just turned 13 weeks old. ( http://forum.chowchow.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=21000 ) He's nearly doubled in weight since he was 8 weeks old. Time goes so fast when they're this tiny. One of the many good things is they're much easier to groom at this age. I keep the ...

Re: Puppy training

Here are some of the basics that we’ve worked on during the 8-13 week age range. I’m still not sure what sequence is best, but each pup is different and they’re all pretty adaptable. Thor’s breeder started training things like bite inhibition early, so we didn’t need to work much on some things. I’m...

I will make a quick video to show you what we did and to show you how well they can be off leash...and behave.... Did you ever get a chance to make this video? If not, could you describe what you did? My pup is now 13 weeks old and we're working hard on regular check-in (look at me) and "come ...

Re: Puppy training

Drew, the petshop training programs are for you, not the dog. The only benefit to the dog is the socialization aspect. If you know the basic verbal commands, the appropriate hand signals, and understand the reward program, thn puppy class isnt going to really offer a whole lot. Yes, the supervised ...

Re: Taking Puppy Out

Both the breeder & vet advised me to avoid letting the pup walk on any ground where there's a chance unvaccinated dogs have been in the previous 6-7 years. So until a week past his 3rd set of shots (before rabies), I'm only letting him in 4 homes/backyards: mine & family members. I have take...

Puppy training

It’s been 17 yrs. since I last trained a Chow pup. In hindsight I can see the mistakes I made. Today the internet has opened up a flood of information & misinformation on every imaginable subject, including dog training. I haven’t completely sorted what’s what yet, but I want to share what I’ve ...

That's our problem now, his bites and nibbles. :( Thor's breeder did a great job training bite inhibition, so it has been pretty easy for me. I think this video explains things well: http://youtu....

Thor looks great. He seems to be adapting rather nicely. I'm hoping he continues on the current path. You wrote this on another discussion about a new baby: BTW, pup looks to be a 'back layer'. Go with that and encourage belly rubs, can help to make for a really socialized and agreeable Chow. I'm v...

And here is a short. Video of how Chicco walks/runs (this was taken when he was 2months and 3 weeks old). He certainly looks very much like a smooth Chow to me. Handsome pup! I love the curly tail, which is something I notice most often with smooths. I'm not familiar with the "bear" or &q...

Re: Smoothy with No Name

We have always had an issue in our house with the puppy play. Those sharp puppy teeth could do some damage. But my guess ...

Re: Why is my chow chow's fur short? 1st time dog owner

Look at the ears for a good indication of final coloring (that could be at 1 year or later). That's good to know! Brush regularly regardless of fur tangling. It stimulates the skin and encourages new fur growth. If he is a smooth, a pin brush will be fine for now. I'm hoping regular grooming will a...

Re: Why is my chow chow's fur short? 1st time dog owner

Here's the grooming tool I use most often: 5-Inch Gripsoft Rotating Comfort Comb, Medium The rotating pins especially help with the more curly & coarse fur on the back legs. A metal flea comb (~2") is handy for combing the face & head. Don't bother trying the 99¢ plastic variety; they c...
