Re: How much exercise?
Dixie, my girl struggles on a 1 mile walk, even in cool weather. Brisco, my boy, on the other hand would go forever if you had the time or energy. I do only walk them about 1 mile, 3 times a week but luckily I live on 6 acres fully fenced, so they get lots of excercise on there own. The funny thing ...

Re: Today is a sad day.. :(
Crystal, I'm very happy that you have found Koda a home. I hate to even imagine having to do the same, but the right choice is very seldom the easy choice. And a tiny bit of advice that you may not need or want. I wouldn't mention anything about the bite on the lip as being the reason. Bianca then m...

Re: Today is a sad day.. :(
I'm a bit suprised at everyone trying to figure out how to make this better??? My brother had an Akita that bit his son, but not badly, they decided that it was probably not such a big deal and that they could work with him and everything would be fine. well unfortunately, 10 months later he bit his...

Re: help for wanna' be chow owner
Chows tend to get a very bad rap in the U.S. more than some other places. I would think that this is because a Chow, if not socialized can be very aggressive. If you've never been around a mean Chow, they are very scary if you're the one there aggression is aimed at. I had one of these scary Chows b...

Re: Schutzhund and Chows
Just so that you are aware and don't give up all hope. I do know of at least one Chow that has completed all three levels of schutzhund. They are certainly can be more difficult to train than many breeds but can be trained. I'm not interested in teaching mine anything much more than the basics, but ...

Re: Help with an over-protective chow chow
I would suggest that maybe you introduce your father to Moomba in a nuetral location like a park or somewhere away from your house. Let him give her some treats and get use to him. Maybe also have him be the one that feeds her while he is there??? Good luck, Matt

Re: teething and nipping
I have always used this simple technique and with good fast results. When your Chow bites at your hands don't scold him, Chows don't take to it very well. I always try to make everything seem like a positive as far as they are concerned. Simply position your hand so that you can roll there lip insid...

Re: Why do Chows have such a bad rep?
There must be something to it. If you look at the second post on training you will see that there have been more than 4000 views on bite inhibition. I love the fact that my Chows are good guard dogs and if they weren't I would be disappointed. I always lead people to believe that they are a bit mean...

Re: Does your Chow sleep on the bed with you?
My two won't even sleep inside, never mind on the bed. It's very rare for either one of ours to stay inside the house for more than 10 or 15 minutes. They absolutely love to be outside keeping an eye on everything.

My girl Dixie hates our slippery wood floor. When she does get up the nerve to walk onto it she usually stops with one back foot firmly on the carpet. On the odd occasion when she completely forgets that she's afraid of it and finds herself stuck in the middle of the room, she will back all the way ...

I had only had male dogs in the past and two together was never a problem. I was never interested in a female, mostly because I like the heavier thicker type of most males compared to most females of almost any breed. We looked for a second Chow pup for almost a year before we came across the chance...

I accidentally just cleared a long reply and I'm sorry but I just can't make myself re-type it, it was good too. Anyway, don't hit your dog in the face or head if your going to hit it at all. I think that getting down to her level, kneeling, might help keep her more calm, and then using firm NO's and...

When I had Baron, my black Chow back in the 80's we lived where it snowed a lot. One morning after a snow storm I went outside and there was no Baron in the yard. I had a brief moment on panic and then called out for him. About 10 feet in front of me a fury black head arose from under the snow with ...

We've got friends with a pool that is accessable to the dogs and we take ours over there all of the time. What I did and do occassionally is put the dogs into the pool and make sure that I guide them to the stairs in the far corner and then put them in again to make sure that they find them on there...

I think that it is important to remember that you can, and do have significant differences in personality even between pups from the same litter and with the same coats. No statement made about temperment is true 100% of the time. I honestly don't know the answer to this question and maybe it is tru...
