Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
She's adorable!! I think she will grow up to 50lbs which I think is perfect for a female and closer to the standard than a 70lb female chow. Her breeder has been breeding for a long time and know what they are doing.
Thanks for the update,

Re: Mouth cancer
So sorry to hear about your chow. I don't know about if it's genetic or not but if you want to save sperm it's pretty easy. The hardest part is find the right vet that does it all the time. Once you find a vet, they will attempt to collect and the check the count to determine if he's fertile. Then t...

Re: Blow dryer
Now that we have 2 chows I decided to upgrade our dryer. It just took too long to dry them with the old one and if you don't dry them completely there is a risk of hotspots. Plus the new one blows loose undercoat out into the air like a cloud. Which really saves on comb/brushing time. I bathed Spart...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
Not the update I was hoping for but stuff happens. She's beautiful and has grown so much. Poor girl can't be a puppy and run around but getting better is the goal now. I know chows have the second worst problems after pugs with elbows but don't know if that includes trauma. Give her a big hug ...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Time is going fast. We have been going to conformation classes and a couple shows lately to get Spartacus more relaxed at the shows. He got a group 4 placement in OH two weekends ago over GCH dogs. Last weekend nothing but now he is comfortable walking in big crowds and will let the judge inspect hi...

Re: Do puppies look like their parents?
You won't find out until it's all grown up. Puppies from same litters turn out differently most the time. Sometimes like a parent or grandparent but other times like nothing from either. Experience breeder will be able tell but they still have to grow up some. Our Spartacus is 12 months old and stil...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
I feel your pain. Chows numbers in Minnesota are even worst. I'm the only one with any but knew that going in when getting Spartacus. Right now I'm entering him in local shows with NOHS only so he can get more comfortable in the ring and maybe get ranked. Our last show in Hutchinson, Minnesota on Oc...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
You may have to adjust it but not as much as you would think. Just keep a little tension on the rope so there's no slack. But when Spartacus pulls the rope it doesn't slip and he can't pull as hard. Spartacus is over 70lbs and the strongest chow we have had and this works well. Before my wife had a ...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
What I have done is switch the leash/collar to a 6 foot rope slip collar. Just make sure it on right so it releases after tension is applied. This is the only thing I have used on Spartacus for the last 3 months. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/ottertailguy/88EC5EB6-291B-447F-A614-36F2CF040...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
I remember this thread and it's been 10 months and wonder how Walter is doing. I hope he's doing much better and would love an update. It's easy to give advise about puppy issues then it's to solve them. Our Spartacus just turned 1 year old and is a puller too. He is getting better only because we h...

Re: I'm really sad, please help. (Breeder situation)
I know how hard it is to wait for a puppy. I'm not talking days but months. We had to wait over 6 months for Spartacus and were very lucky there was a red male pup from a cream mom and a black dad. Having litters with all girl happen because I know 2 breeders that had them, one with 6 and the other ...

He's matured very nicely. Looks like a very sweet boy that's seems very comfortable at the show. I do think you both will have fun going to shows without Rory. Plus your wife and daughter can come and just enjoy the show.

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
I can totally understand showing your pup yourself and wouldn't think of doing it any other way. I too like chows with longer legs that can move but can see why others like the other types too. Yes, they seem very similar and hope someday to meet you and your chows. I measured Spartacus and he's 20 ...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Spartacus is hanging around 70lbs which I'm actually happy with. He should grow another inch taller and will fill out in the next 6 months according to his breeder. Finding chows to compete against is our problem too. You could always have your breeder show your new pup and would probably be cheaper...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
We traveled to Wisconsin last weekend and Spartacus earned his first point toward his AKC Championship. We have a lot of things we can do better but it's a process. He still has almost all his puppy fur but everyone loved him. There were 7 other chows at the show but none in his class, 9 to 12 month...

Re: tips on crate training
I really don't think anyone is going to be angry with your opinion about crate training. I too have had dogs for over 50 years and never used one until 5 years ago because we started going to dog shows. I'm also not replying thinking I would ever change your mind. I don't think they should be used a...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
She looks great and love the skunk tail. Also funny and scary how puppies will chew on anything they find. They really don't need fancy chew toys but need to watch them so they don't chew on things they shouldn't.

Re: Keeping the bib dry
Spartacus's bib seems to be wet all the time. He just turned 11 months but as soon as it began I started using the blow dryer on him. The dryer use to scare him so much that just the look of it was enough. Now it doesn't bother him at all which is nice. Last week I decide to trim his bib to even it ...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
Take lots a pictures, she will be that size for only a short time. It's funny that after I take a bunch, some are so much better than others. I would think black chows are even harder to take because they are all the same color. I've only seen a few chows from Michael and Linda, they have all been r...
