Re: Carter has Entropian

Hi there! I just went through this with McKenzie (you can even see a pic of what she looked like the day of surgery after I got her home in the pics forum - title is "McKenzie finally has fur" - the pics show her before I got her, the first weekend I got her, her surgery, and now). Anyway,...

Re: Harness

Would you guys recommend a harness even for a chow that doesn't ever pull? McKenzie has never once pulled; she's very much a mommy's girl and stays right by my side or right in front of me, she does not like to go more than a couple feet away from me. We've just used a collar and leash so far. She's...

Re: Nutrition

After the advice of everyone here, I sought out to find Solid Gold for McKenzie but couldn't find it at the 5 pet stores I know of around here so I got her a bag of Nutro Lamb and Rice. She seemed to like it okay but it gave her the runs even though I weened her onto it after she was at the shelter ...

Re: Need advice on dry skin/coat issues

I give McKenzie 1200mg of fish oil every day with her breakfast. The vet told me to start giving it to her to help her coat come in since the shelter shaved her. He also said it would help the sore spots on her elbows from laying on the concrete. I told him that I also take fish oil and if I could j...

Re: Holly is home with us

I'm so glad the 3 H's are doing well. Has your hubby won the foster vs. permanent home yet? I think it's VERY cool that the two girls play together well and Holden can just watch and roll his eyes at them. He probably is very relieved that Hannah has someone else to play with now! I just hope Hannah...

They both look gorgeous. Mia's did come out very nicely, especially considering her coloring and Chutters is just so darn handsome!!

Re: McKenzie finally has some fur!

I didn't have a computer for a few days so sorry in my delayed response but I did want to thank you all for your kind words then and now, and your continued support and help. We all just adore McKenzie. She came with us to visit family for the holidays and we even took her to the christmas eve party...

Re: Cute but illegal, ChowChows

It's legal here in Florida and they actually just voted on it a few months ago. Animal groups were pushing for it to become illegal but it was shot down every step of the way. I think it's cruel and would never think about doing it. Then again, I also would never drive a car/truck with no door, no h...

Re: Just Adopted.

Hello! I'm in Florida too!

She looks like a lab/chow mix to me but as jacqui said, it'll be much easier to tell later on. She's beautiful regardless. Does she act stubborn at all? Think for herself? Then she's a chow, lol.

Re: Wet grass

Haha, nope, you're not alone.

Luckily, McKenzie no longer acts dainty about wet grass. Now she doesn't even think twice about it. So much so that I have to wipe her paws and her stomach and her chest when we get back into the house to dry her up!

Re: Holiday fun - post your yard decorations

Boy I wish someone tried to decorate. Out of my entire subdivision, I think there are 5 houses with any sort of decorations, nevermind like the Cranks. That was always my favorite part of christmas. Our family used to drive around town to see all the houses lit up, seems like less and less houses ar...

Re: Hemangioma or Hemangiosarcoma?

I just wanted to say that I don't have any experience with a chow having any of these conditions but I myself had a hemangioma. It started as a little bubble right above my eye when I was a few months old. It grew and grew just because it was filling up with blood. My dad was in the marines so they ...

Re: OOPS Lost My Manners

Oh our silly yet very smart chows. McKenzie will take chewy treats from anyone but she runs up, snatches it, and runs away to enjoy it. She'll eat hard treats from me or my fiance but if anyone else tries, she either down right refuses it if it's the first meet and greet or after that, she'll take i...

McKenzie here, sending happy thoughts your way; I know how much it helped me and my mommy get through my surgery. Mommy said trying to stay busy helped her a lot, she was very worried about me going through surgery so soon! Keiko, tell your mommy that you'll be okay, we have to be strong for them. T...

Re: Help! How to train my chow/mix!

I just finished a basic obedience course with McKenzie. She already walked very well on the leash but lots of the other dogs had problems and I kept hearing the trainer tell them that if the dog pulls, to turn around and just walk and that they will follow you and soon realize that they follow you, ...

I'm sorry, I wish I had more info to offer you. I've never had a dog with heartworm before because we had always gotten them as puppies and kept them on preventative. I was really worried about McKenzie for awhile but as I saw her breathing getting better and actually seeing the test come back barel...

Oh and if my vet were to have to do the treatment in 6 months, it would be one day there, 3 weeks resting, one day there for the second round, 6 weeks of rest and at about $500.

Re: Should I take a chance?

When I adopted McKenzie, they told me just before signing that she had heartworms. We had already fallen in love with her and decided that she needed a loving home no matter what. The poor girl had never even been in a house before (well so we think), nevermind proper love and care. We also don't ha...

Re: Help! How to train my chow/mix!

How long have you had him? Maybe I'm blind, I did quickly skim things and didn't see that mentioned. A big thing with getting chows to listen is that they have to respect you first. My chow I've had for 8 weeks now listens to me anywhere in any situation but if my fiance tells her to do something, s...

That is adorable. M&M sound like a chow storybook or something. On another note, do any of your chows act similarly with you instead of another chow? Do they try to console you when you're having a bad day or are scared or anything? I ask because it seems like McKenzie tried to this weekend. She...

Re: Homeowners' Insurance

I have United. They exclude any injuries or damages caused by any animal - dog, cat, rabbit, bird, etc. There's a whole list and it says "not limited to." I have heard of only one company in Florida that'll allow chows but I believe they have the same "we just won't cover anything the...

Being a long time allergy sufferer myself, I wish I knew just how allergic this daughter is to things. When I was tested, I got tested for 100 allergens and was positive for 96. And I can honestly say that I'm fine now as long as I don't stick my face into their coat right after a brushing and wash ...
