Re: Nicknames!

My nick names for Lilly: Lilly-poo, Sweetie Pie, Girly-girl, Silly Lilly. Mike calls her Phyllis (as in Phyllis Diller) when she firsts gets up from sleeping because her mane is all disheveled, she then shake-shakes her fur back into place.

Not sure of this study: http://www.medicaldaily.com/articles/17475/20130716/dogs-memory-animal-psychology-pets.htm I don't think Tess or even Lilly could "pass the test." I do know that both Tess & especially Lilly had/have memories of things that happened in their past. Lilly can tell...

Re: My Little Lilly

It's been a hard week for Lilly. The heat gets to her. The cabin is cool but the outside is hot! She wakes up late in the morning, though I try to get her up early, she is a late sleeper. The afternoon we hit the creek & in the evening, when I am working in the garden she sentries around the cle...

Re: Chow's undercoat

Five hours seems like an excessive amount of time. Tess gave me at least an hour when I groomed her. That was about all she could stand. Lilly, so far a lot less. Knowing Lilly and how she would act under the same situation it would be considered abuse. I would surely complain to the manager & m...

Re: My Little Lilly

So, after several months of everything being ok, Lilly acted up. I was getting ready to tether her to the porch and she growled at me big time. I was going to brush her. I left her out on the porch and closed the blinds so she couldn't see me. I did tell her "bad Lilly" which upsets her. I...

Re: My Little Lilly

I wrote some time ago, when Tess passed the deer took over our clearing. There was one little doe that caught our hearts. She was littler than the rest and started following Mike around when he was eating peanuts. She would eat the peanut shells. In a short time she would eat peanuts out of our hand...

Re: My Little Lilly

Lilly has yet to "blow" her fur. Last week it was cold enough to make a fire in our wood stove. Now the forecast is for triple digit temps. Her coat is so thick & long. She isn't really good about being brushed but we are working on it. We are taking shorter and more frequent trips out...

Re: Eating 101

Both Tess & Lilly chew(ed) their food. Although I think Lilly was more used to soft food "in her other life." We worried at first, hoping that she was ok. She is chewing, still doesn't like hard big chews, like those breath freshening bones.

Re: The Chow Chow, Super Vigilant!!!

I just re-read some of my posts about Tess. It is still hard to read, I do still miss her. I put together several lines from my different posts. This was my girl. Tess was very aggressive when she came to us. She was also very territorial (not sure what she went thru before). She was overly protecti...

Re: My Little Lilly

Believe me I have all the ingredients at hand. That happened to Tess & it smelled more like heated metal - we were running around the cabin looking for some "hot wire." Them we realized, Tess was sprayed by a skunk.

Re: My Little Lilly

We have taken her with us to do our big shopping 60 miles away (120 miles plus round trip depending where we go). And for short trips too. She is relaxing more, but it is home where she likes to stay. I can imagine that she went thru some difficult times before us. Her trip from Yakima to meet us in...

Re: perfect vacation for chow

When we were back in SoCal & working, we boarded Tess (most of the time) when we went on vacations. She was really good about it except trying to get her in the door. When we moved to Montana, Tess road all the way with us (of course) and she was the best traveler; great in motels along the way....

Re: My Little Lilly

Lilly & I have been alone for the last few days. She has been so calm. Right now she is laying in loft. She loves music, especially Native American flute music. I have it on now while I am trying to be busy around the house doing some deep cleaning. Mike will be returning soon. This is sad; when...

Chows are very special! Had the best with Tess. She was truly my girl. Lilly is so different, she is also my girl. Wouldn't have any other than a Chow.

Re: My Little Lilly

I haven't written anything about Lilly for a while. Every time we have a special moment I think "I have to write that down," but time gets away from me. I should say that Lilly is of the forest. She has adapted to the mountain ways. Fauns are born in the spring when the wild roses first bl...

The pictures are really big so can't comment on them. It is true about some home owner's insurances. & we didn't get home owner's insurance until we lost our Tess. I think that it is a good thing that he was good around you. That is a plus. He may need to be vetted, what you see is only surface ...

Re: My Chow Chow's Strange Behavior?

I agree about taking him to the vet. It could be a number of things from a urinary tract infection to anything else. At the age of six he should be at his prime. Chows can live into their teens without a decrease in their mental capacity. Let your vet know of all the strange behaviors that he has be...

Re: CHOWS and pools..

I think it would be a good idea to buy a little pool for your Chow. Dogs also sweat from their paws. When I saw that Tess was overheating we would take a walk to our creek so she could cool off. Tess also loved the water, creeks & shallow rivers - though only 3/4s up her legs, any deeper she wou...

All's good in Lilly Land. I put on some Native American flute music which seems to calm her & we "danced." She finally felt like eating and had a good dinner. We took a good walk to the creek this afternoon.

Re: Kenneling your Chow

We kenneled Tess. We had a wonderful vet in California that had an old house converted into his clinic. He was Apache's vet too. The back yard was fully fenced and the kenneling area was also fenced & the dog runs were of course fenced. He had young people who would walk and exercise the dogs be...

The past few days have been too much for Lilly. She is outside sulking on the porch. Friday started it. I really dreaded the trip to the vet for her shots. Our vet was really good about coming out to the Trooper to give to give Lilly her shots. Poor little thing was shivering; I held her and held he...

Tess' Best Friend Buddy

I have mentioned Buddy in past posts about Tess. Buddy is a big boy, Lab & Pit Bull mix. Tess dominated him when they had sleep overs. Buddy is turning 14 this June. Buddy is the funniest and loving-est and best friend to his master Earl. Earl has a guest ranch up here in northwest Montana, we s...

Bear Alert! Our neighbor called us a couple of days ago to tell us that they had a bear climbing a ladder to their cat food & it looked like a grizzly bear. (We then tell our other neighbors.) When there is a bear the deer seem to disappear. We had lots of wind & rain around that time and Li...

Re: muzzle

I reluctantly bought Lilly a Baskerville Ultra Muzzle, only to be used when she gets her shots which are due. I was hoping to find a soft Velcro muzzle, but they are too long in the snout. The Baskerville fits her short little muzzle. I really don't want to put it on Lilly - but - there is the fear ...
