Re: tyson the troubled chow

I am sorry it came to this but in the long run, if it keeps him safe, then it is probably for the best. Did you let his new family know about this site?

I am very sorry to hear this. I remember you from when you used to post about Jack Black. I always thought it was an interesting name since he wasn't black. We will light our candle for him. Run free Jack Black.....

Re: Chow keeps biting

Tippsy's mom gave you some good advice. I want to add, be sure when you let out the high pitched loud "OW" that you stand up and stop all play immediately. It is important that you don't (for lack of a better word) whine at your chow, this will just make it worse. My daughter was 11 when w...

Re: HELP - Hot spot problem that no veterinary solves

Grains and/or corn in their food and fleas tend to be the biggest triggers of hotspots in my Chows. The flea issue around where I live got so bad last year that Frontline wasn't doing anything. I actually had to switch to Trifexis for my dogs and Comfortis for my cat. We finally got rid of the fleas.

Re: Bam Bam

So, I missed your previous posts about your issues but went back and read a little about what is going on. I have done a lot of fostering for chows. I have 2 Chows and a Pekingese currently. I have been bringing in one additional foster Chow until he gets adopted and then usually within a month or s...

Re: Is Your Chow Like This?

My Pekingese does what you describe but that is because he is nosey and wants to see what is going on. My chows are big eaters. Teddie has been in a few food fights where others have taken his food so he is very guarded and slow while eating but it takes a lot to distract him. Usually if he feels he...

Re: troubled chow

Where are you located? You don't mention what kind of training and socialization you have done with your chow. If you haven't done any, it is not too late to start. I agree 100% that putting your chow down would be wrong. Your chow is a part of your family and deserves to be helped to get through th...

Hooray for Midnight. It took a little time for Midnight to find his "home" but it was well worth the wait for him. The good thing about Midnight is he really wants to please. He was never ever vicious, just scared and confused at the shelter and looking for someone to trust. Now that he ha...

Re: Uses for chows

Boogie, my black chow, thinks it is his job to be my seeing eye dog in the dark. Of course I just end up tripping or kicking him by accident because I can't see him but he will still walk just in front of me every time. Boogie used to also be my rule enforcer but once we got the Pekingese, Teekie, h...

Re: Pros and cons of getting a second chow?

I personally think chows learn things from other chows that they can't really learn from people. With that being said, they can learn both good and bad things. If your puppy is having socialization issues it would be easier or you to bring in an already socialized older chow to be an example. The la...

Re: She bit me, now what???

Well, first off, I am very sorry that you and the groomer were bitten. I don't feel that I have enough details to reply with anything specific but it seems like you knew that the grooming was going to be difficult. Is it possible that you were pushing to do too much? If it is that difficult to groom...

Good for you for doing the research and good for you for sticking by her no matter what. There are a lot of people who will discard a pet because of an inconvenience. Is there any kind of treatment for this condition?

Re: Is this cutie a full chow?

He is very cute but I would say no on the purebred. I also wouldn't pay $400.00 for him even though he is adorable. If you are not in a huge hurry to adopt, may I suggest contacting the rescues in your area and putting the word out that you are looking for a Chow puppy. Also check Petfinder and PetH...

I know it is very discouraging but remember, everything happens for a reason. Now I know this is a cliche but it really is true of most things when you look back. This job wasn't meant to be but that is because there is something better out there for you.

I have 2 male Chows, a male Pekingese, and have a foster male Chow currently. I have also had different male foster chows. My pack seems to do better with males. I have fostered 2 different female chows at different times but the females were a little standoffish with them. I guess the girls didn't ...

Re: Fainting goat?

Hmmm.....I would definately take her to the vet just to rule out anything neurological. Now that Rory's dad mentioned it, I too had a chow that had seizures. He used to get stiff, put his head down to his chest and tip over. It took us a while to realize what it was. When I took him to the vet, he d...

Re: Saw New Side of Whitby

Most police officers are "on guard" at all times. I am sure Whitby was picking up on their tension and trying to protect you from them. This is why a lot of police officers end up getting charged by dogs which a lot of times doesn't end up well for the dogs.

Re: My little chow puppy has ectropium of the eyelid

Are you planning on neutering him eventually? If so, is this something that can wait until then? I tried looking up ectropium the way you spelled it and I get results for ectropion (which I see is a turning out of the eyelids) Is this what he has? Or does he have the much more common entropion (wher...

Re: Introducing an older chow male to my only female

Is Dakota 9 months or 9 years old? If she is only 9 months old and the new chow is a year old then they should be fairly compatible as far as activity wise. I would take her to meet the new chow in a neutral setting and if you are still interested in getting him then also try introducing them again ...
