For all living creatures, respect and love. For chows especially: 1. NILIF (Nothing in life is free). Make your chow work for everything. A simple sit or shake will do. If your pup asks to go out, have the baby sit before you will open the door. Always give a command that must be performed before an...

I got my first two Chows as pups and they both got spayed and their entropian surgeries at 6 months. This was close to twenty years ago and they both did fine.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard enough when our chowdren are taken from us at the end of a long life, but to lose a chowling... Your family is in my prayers.

It is hard to take a good picture of a black chow. It took me forever to find the settings that gave me a picture of Cinder's features instead of a black blob.

Linda,

I understand about the difficulty you are having taking pictures. You may have noticed the first set I posted of Teddy he was always asleep. That's because it was the only time he would stay facing me! It should get better as he becomes more comfortable with you and his environment.

Jessica,

I won't pretend to know the right words to say to help you through this difficult time. Instead I'll just say you and your classmates are in my thoughts and prayers. (And petting a Chow certainly can't hurt whenever you are hurting). God bless you all.

Jeff: Teddy will always be blind. However, once he gets his eyelift he won't be in pain, or in need of pain meds. Dogdad: Thanks for the reassurance. If he stays with us I won't feel like a failed first time foster, but rather a very lucky family. Larry: Thanks for the vote of confidence. To all: Te...

I too agree with JH. Cinder was convinced she was the leader when she got here. It took a lot of time and patience to convince her that I'm alpha and so are the other humans in her life. That doesn't mean she is beyond testing the boundaries occassionaly, however. I am disappointed in Ceasar,as I am...

Julia, you may want to try a rolled leather collar. It provides a place for tags, doesn't mat the fur, and I've never had it irritate a dogs skin.

Things are much improved since my last update. Almost all the razor burn is gone. His incision is only slightly inflamed and does not have any drainage. He does still want to lick at the site, so when I can't watch him the e-collar goes back on. He is sleeping through the night. He is getting around...

There are electronic pet doors that will only open for the critter with the collar with the transmitter in place. That will keep the unwanted critters out! I don't have a doggie door myself because I don't want the dogs in the yard unless I know that's where they are. Left to her own devices, Cinder...

Linda, I'm sorry to hear of the condition your new foster is in. His former people have incurred some very bad karma. In regards to warmth, I'm getting Teddy a coat because it is going to get cold here soon. I don't know where you are located, but the lack of insulation is a valid concern. I do have...

I am so sorry to hear about your girl. It's amazing how these chowdren touch our hearts and enrich our lives. It is a great tribute to her memory that you are looking to adopt another Chow. In my opinion, no puppy's personality is fixed at only five months. Also, a shelter is not the best environmen...

Cinder was microchipped at the shelter before I adopted her, almost 4 years ago and she is fine. I am much less concerned about the risks of microchipping than the risk of losing her. I would microchip any furkid.

The groomer at the vet did the shaving. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I suspect they had no idea how sensitive his skin is. When I first picked him up there were only a few small red spots that I attributed to tick removal. It took time for the inflammation to show up. And you are right, he...

Thanks Jeff. You are right, you don't ever want to hear that. The vet said it was an inflammatory reaction to a very close shave(like the most extreme razor burn you can imagine), and having the skin touching things it never had before. The benadryl is an antihistamine that blocks the inflammation p...

OMG! What a night!

Last night we had a horrible setback, Teddy was screaming, spinning in circles and scooting his butt across the floor. I couldn’t calm him down for anything. I rushed him to the emergency vet (luckily just 5 minutes away), he screamed and paced through the trip and I had to carry him in (all 65 lbs ...

I'm a foster mom, now and to my first ever boy!!!

American Animal Rescue Society, http://www.AARSociety.org, had posted an urgent need for a foster for a blind chow from TN. He's a male 5yrs old. Has been kept on a short chain outside all of his life even though they have acres of land. The owners were going to throw him out!!! He may never have be...
