Re: My chow wont come to my calls..

For me the only real solution is to never let Dim Sum off leash. The only place he is allowed off leash is the fenced-in dog park (and my fenced-in back yard).

Playing with my sort-of new camera; still trying to get a handle on all the various settings. Here are the results... http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr253/pistoncupchampion/DSC00919.jpg http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr253/pistoncupchampion/DSC00936.jpg http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr2...

Re: Need some help.

He doesn't have to be a mix. The tongue not being all blue/purple means nothing. Dim Sum is pure Chow, and his tongue is spotted. But 25 lbs. is definitely small; he might be mixed with another Spitz-type dog.

Dim Sum and I will be there! Here's hoping the weather is good. Right now the 10-day forecast says it will be party cloudy with a high of 76º.

Re: Rice /Grains

I have no proof or evidence, but I imagine Chows were fed rice in the past; they're from China, after all.

When I cook for Dim Sum, I sometimes give him brown rice along with chicken or beef.

Re: My chow wont come to my calls..

Dim Sum will usually come on call inside the house. Outside, all bets are off! I have tried every training trick in the book, and nothing works. The scent of freedom and smelly things is just too strong.

Re: Is he a small ChowChow ?

Just checked Simba this morning. He weighs 33pounds, is 16" tall (paws to shoulder) and 2 feet long (neck to butt). Didn't measure width  Is he small for an 8,5months old male Chow ? Not many Chows walking around here so not much comparison. I checked Dim Sum medical records; he was 63 lb...

Re: TransFURmation time line for chow puppy to adult coat?

I have the same question too. I've noticed that Tobi has been losing a LOT of his coat for like the past couple of weeks and fur was everywhere all the time, like clumps would be lying in his kennel. It is really hot down here though and he's outside most of the day so that can account. But he's li...

Re: Please settle a disagreement

I have a coat for Dim Sum, but I only use it if it's really pouring down rain and I don't want to deal with a super-soaked dog. The coat is unlined; no way does a Chow need more insulation! I have never been 100% happy with the few coats I have tried, mostly because they don't fit Chows well. The on...

Re: dry food & canned food, what else?

I do agree with the changing of dry food, but I stick with dry foods that have fewer ingredients than Orijens. I am sure it is an excellent product and many people use it but it still has rather a lot of mixed meats and fish in there, would be a nightmare to work out any intolerences if one arose. ...

Re: dry food & canned food, what else?

JMHO, I would change to a different dry food. The Purina Pro Plan puppy formula has meat as its first ingredient, but then there are a lot of low quality ingredients listed afterwards ( brewers rice, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole grain wheat, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocoph...

I like to give Dim Sum raw meaty bones. Not only are they good for his teeth and gums, I can see that chewing on them stimulates both his mind and body.

Re: Dim Sum

I went to the Feria de Sevilla, a flamenco dance festival in Bethesda MD. Towards the end of the day, a cooler of ice was emptied out onto the ground. Dim Sum decided to roll in the ice and then lick it. http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr253/pistoncupchampion/100_6101.jpg http://i489.photobucket....

Re: Squat or leg lift?

I can't exactly remember when Dim Sum started to lift his leg, but he was an older...maybe a year? I'd say he does it 90% of the time now. When he has a really full bladder and needs to peeeeeeeeeeeee, then he squats. Like Rory, he like to get on top of a bush. Yesterday, he got on top of a pile of ...

As far as I know, it is, but only in large amounts. Garlic is the same. Some people actually recommend giving small amounts of garlic because it purportedly has some health benefits.
