Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow
My Sheena was 4.5 years old when I got Troy at 9 months, however both were chows. She never appeared interested in other breeds when we went to the dog park but Troy didn’t care, he had tons of energy that was never ending and sounds similar to Oscar. Sheena did play a lot of tug of war with Troy wi...

Re: Health Care Bill and Pet Care cost
Hope Boo Boo comes thru OK with his latest medical issue. Yes, it is very costly having a chow or any pet for that matter. A lot of people don’t take into account the cost of good preventative care and quality food for their chows or any dog. When I tell people that my chow costs on the average of h...

Re: CHOWS FOOD
Hi... there was some discussion about dry dog foods and where they were manufactured, etc. on this website (due to the recall of dog/cat food which accounted for the death of both dogs and cats in the U.S.). The majority of these chow people in the discussion are very knowledgeable and are long time...

Re: CHOWS FOOD
You didn’t mention how old your chows are? Weight loss should always be a concern. A chow refusing to eat dry food or limiting their own food intake can mean there is something wrong internally or they could just be a picky eater (but then you usually know you have a picky chow right at the beginnin...

Re: Chronic cystitis
So sorry your chow is going through such medical problems. Sheena also had hypothyroidism. Just some warnings: the thyroxin drug will permanently disable the thyroid from producing its own thyroxin from the thyroid. However, it is good to jumpstart the thyroid. I gave synthroid drug to Sheena for ab...

Sad to hear of Louie's hip dysplasia...but glad that you found out what the problem is. Hope he can have the surgery sooner rather than later. Sending my best wishes and hugs to Louie and to your human family as well. It's always tough to get this kind of news. Hang in there.

Re: Wheatgrass for Chows in Winter?
I've purchased wheatgrass for Sheena...have even given her a dropperful of straight wheatgrass juice squirted into her mouth inbetween meals daily for a short period of time. It never upset her stomach or anything. With the wheatgrass blades Sheena just rubbed her face in it and didn't appear to car...

Re: Chronic cystitis
Hi! My Sheena had chronic cystitis. I saw her loose in the streets for 1.25 years when I finally rescued her. She was on so many different antibiotics for 3 years and nothing worked permanently, I even tried Chinese herbs. The UTI always returned. Vet told me it would be chronic since she probably h...

I never thought that in the heart of the city in Sacramento in my small backyard there would be a tick since I have mostly dirt, hardly any grass, no weeds and always kept/keep it one inch in height (Sheena doesn't like dew on grass)...yet 2 years ago, in September, i located a tick on Sheena's head...

Re: flea treatment
I treat for fleas sporadically and only when necessary. I am also concerned about the poisons in their systems, absorbed thru the skin or ingested. For some reason, Sheena is not prone to fleas…except when I took in this rescued 7 month old kitten in January who brought fleas into our home and some ...

Re: ANYBODY EVER DARED TO CLEAN THEIR CHOWS TEETH (FANGS)?
No need to be ashamed since most people don't do it...at least you're concerned about it. All the tooth brushing and bone chewing (which can crack/chip their teeth and injure their gums) will never take the place of a chow’s teeth being professionally cleaned by a vet who can go below the gums. The ...

Re: ANY OTHER DRIBBLERS? YEUK! GRUNGE!
Ming is not alone! Sheena slobbers (more than dribbles) when she is very hot and when she is stressed. I carry paper towels with me to wipe her drool. I’ve noticed that she will slobber/drool the most whenever we go to the no-leash dog park and there are more than 5 or 6 dogs there (even when it is ...

Re: Prey instinct is it a bad thing?
It is sad when chows kill other animals but such is life and nature. Glad it wasn’t a neighbor’s pet. However, anything in your yard is fair game for a chow. The only thing I would worry about is catching something from the prey to make your chow ill. I check out my yard before and after my chow goe...

You didn't mention if you had taken her to the vet when you rescued her. The vet could estimate her age, check her teeth-if they need to be cleaned or teeth removed, do complete bloodwork on her to see if her liver and kidney functions are ok, listen to her heartbeat see if there is any arrythmia or...

Well, there goes Sheena with her "catch me if you can" chowatude! While I'm in a panic  Tried that and will never do that again! No matter how much Sheena is trained! Now that she is older I could catch her but she has a mind of her own! I've noticed in the dog park she walk...

#-o I don't know about chow pups since I got my Sheena at 3.5 yrs young, however, if Sheena began to smell I would check her body/skin thoroughly to make sure she didn't have a staph infection someplace or hidden sores and take her to the vet and get blood tests done to find out what is wrong with h...
