Re: Skin Problems - Black Stuff / Balding! HELP!

Thank you!!!

I will ask the vet. I hadn't heard that about white chows! I thought it was just my baby girl! She's had so many problems. What does the medicine treat?? I mean is it for allergies?

Re: Skin Problems - Black Stuff / Balding! HELP!

Thanks for your story user952824! Because of Angel's allergies I am going to stick what the vet gave us for now but will share your recommendations with her and see what she thinks if this doesn't work!!! Missy: we did get a thyroid test done and it came back normal. I didn't realize there was more ...

Re: Skin Problems - Black Stuff / Balding! HELP!

Thanks for your help!!

We have been to the vet: Seboorea! It's like severe dry skin. She's going to live! YEAH!

Just some special shampoo and some ear drops to clear up the ear infection.

Re: Skin Problems - Black Stuff / Balding! HELP!

The black stuff is attached to the fur - it looks just like something is burning her skin off... it looks so painful! She has had a lot of food allergies - she is on Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato and it seemed to be working for almost 3 years. Maybe they changed something in their recipe? We got a ...

Skin Problems - Black Stuff / Balding! HELP!

Hi Guys! Before we head to the vet I wanted to get people's opinion... I've been online for hours and can't figure out what is wrong with Angel. She has several spots of receding skin all over her body. It appears the skin is peeling off and clumping into what I can only describe as black clumps (ma...

Re: Chicken Soup!

I love this book! I volunteer for an animal rescue called "Underdog ResQ" and I was given the book by the founder of the organization at a charity event we had... it is just wonderful. I save it for those "UGHHHH" days and each time I tear-up and have to put it back down. The sto...

Chicken Soup!

Hi Everyone!! I just read a story from the book "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul" that I wanted to share: http://books.google.com/books?id=ndAQQ5Fxpz8C&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=chicken+soup+for+the+dog+lovers+soul+chow&source=bl&ots=SZpYmSBpPz&sig=mJjghS0is-enIkJ...

Re: scratching

This is SO weird... Angel does that, too! We always wonder why she's doing it... She doesn't do it in places she is about to sleep! In fact, she does it in places that are extremely awkward! Like behind the couch or on the floor just in front of the fire place (when it isn't lit - that would be anot...

Re: Flea Medication

Wow so many responses! Sounds like most people use Frontline... I will have to ask our vet about that to make sure it won't aggravate Angel's allergies. We had a dog who hated Frontline... he was a Golden and whenever we put it on him he would hid and try to rub his back on the floor. None of them h...

Sounds to me like they are trying to establish early on who the Alpha will be. Are they neutered?

I'm all teary eyed after your story! She found you! What a lucky family you are! I have a lady Chow, too: Her name is officially "Angel" but we call her "Kitty" to her face. :) Angel's "little" brother is a rescued Greyhound, Ripley. Can't wait to see pictures of your l...

Re: Is she small?

Angel is pretty small, too! She last weighted 38 pounds (up from 35 and a half last year at this time!) and she is full grown (12 going on 13). I wouldn't be too concerned, but I'm not sure many lady Chows get to be 60-70 pounds?

Flea Medication

I just got K9 Advantix and applied it twice in 3 weeks (after a stop at the groomer and an "okay" from the vet) and we have fleas everywhere! It's disgusting... I wrote them a nasty email which made me feel better but now I have an itchy puppy.

What do you use and why?

Any side effects?

Re: Chow's Tail (help)

Hi ToniAnn!

My Chow, who is 12, does that, too! I agree with CoraP that it has something to do with the back legs losing their strength. I've noticed Angel having a difficult time standing up every so often.

I'm Baaaack!

Hi Everyone!! It's been quite some time since I last was on and I see so many new names! Nice to see some familiar friendly faces, too. When I was last on it was because Angel had melanoma cancer and was given only a short time to life: well! That was almost 2 years ago and she is as happy as can be...

I missed Part 1 of this but have some advice! Some dogs have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder caused by stress. Similarly to how some people wash their hands constantly, some dogs cannot stop chasing their tails. It is their instinct to "chase" and it is something close by to chase. Because t...

I love this question, too!! Angel got her name because we had a Chow that didn't live very long... His name was Bear. My parents went to the place where they'd bought him to complain that he was ill treated by them and found a little white face that looked just like him! Turns out she had pneumonia ...

It's nice to see you back AngelsMom especially with good news! You've been in our thoughts. Re: "I usually get her cheap store brand white bread. The vet said it doesn't matter at all...." But the white bread would contribute to her itchies/allergies because it feeds the yeasts with sugar...

No specific kind, JH. I usually get her cheap store brand white bread. The vet said it doesn't matter at all.... just something to soak up the acid.

Sorry to hear about your loss!! JH.... Yeah, the vet made it sound so obvious! If her belly is empty and she can't find food, it gets upset, then she throws up. DER. hehe. So on days she doesn't eat her breakfast (spoiled...) I either put some sprinkled parm cheese on it as a bribe or I just put it ...

Hi JH!

My dog Angel does that, too. She has acid reflux. The vet recommended giving her a slice of bread in the morning to soak up the acid (particularlly on days that she decides to not eat her breakfast!) that way she has something in her belly.

Maybe that's what is going on with your male, too??
