Maximum age to breed?

Hi,
Is 8 years old to old for a female to breed? She's never had any puppies, but her bone structure is beautiful and she's healthy. Her teeth are like little pearls. Vet said no, he would not breed an 8 year old.
Thoughts? Bad idea?
thank you,

Re: My girl had a grand mal seizure

My chow, who will be 10 years old in a week, has had seizures since he was a puppy. He may have one every couple of months, they've increased as he got older but there would be periods where he would not have any for a few months, or at least that we didn't see him having. The actual seizure of phys...

I am so sorry to hear about what happened to your boy, sorry I know my reply is late. All I've ever owned are Chow Chow's and you're experience is here to help others get through things that they may similarly experience now or later on in life...

Re: Chow Chow Spider

I do not mean to bring anybody down, those are really cute but I hope people consider the outside temperatures before dressing their chows in a second suit. They already wear 1 suit everyday which is their fur. Adding a constume has to make them hot. The humane association in my state insists on hav...

Re: Slug eating?

She is fine. Vet said not to worry. I worry anyway! #-o It was so coincidental the same evening she was pouncing & lurking around the corner of our house. She chases bugs and whatnot, but didn't see the slugs until later on when it was almost dark. It's a scary world out there, just in our backy...

Re: Cost effective Hot Spot relief

I knew immediately what caused my dogs hotspots / rash up the spine region and tail base, food. The shot and medicine was not that much money for the relief it gave. Along with shaving to keep spots dry, I used hydrogen peroxide, the next day I could tell the spots were attempting to dry. There were...

Slug eating?

Ever catch your Chow eating or playing with slugs? I found this on my house last night where earlier in the day she was gleefully pouncing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limax_maximus - if you see the picture of the entangled slugs with blue slime i had that, guess they were mating. I read that they ...

Fiber .. confused on why and when to use

Hello, Is anyone else confused by fiber? I call my vet today and ask what can cause soft stools. One of the reasons I was given was too much fiber. I've been trying to understand why they say to take fiber for diarrhea, then turn around and I read or I am told to take fiber for constipation. Why bot...

Re: Arrived in Tucson, AZ two weeks ago with Chows

Sounds like you're doing great with dealing with the heat... I hear that chow's like marble floors too. I think the issue with ice cubes is... my personal motto : If they are panting and overheated no ice cubes, just water. If they are breathing normal and appear cool / normal body temperature, ice ...

Re: Farewell Venus

Thank you. It's nice to talk to other people about our chowdren. This was so darn unexpected, I had no idea of that there were risks involved with preanesthetics. I just didn't know. If you have a wirey chow chow who doesn't want to be touched I warn you know don't allow them to get so stressed out,...

Overbreeding questions and can the AKC tell if?

Does anyone know about overbreeding? What are the characteristics and diseases that a dog can have that came from an overbred female? What is true overbreeding, a female who is bred each heat cycle for 1 or more years? I understand a mother can "blow their coat" (coat becomes short and gen...

Farewell Venus

I've come to let everyone know my 2 year old passed this morning. She had a heart attack.. We took her to the vet to get bloodwork done and she fought with the tech's and the vet. They couldn't keep her still... she was there to have an enzyme test due to her nonstop months of diarrhea with blood, s...

Pimples, or hot spots?

Hello All, My 22 month old developed hot spots about 2 months ago. When he went to the vet he had the itchy raw spots on lower back, near the tail, on spots on the tail. As well as biting at legs, toes, and raw spots on mouth that crusted over. When I got to the vet it was under the light I noticed a...

Coco Chow, Are you sure i can't add fresh food to the dry food I buy? Now i'm really confused. Isn't that like saying I can't give treats? My game plan was to buy the bulk dry food and then make my own wet food. Argh, lol. Jen

Looks like we're in the same boat. The bad mother that i am, that I am now waking up to...is the food i was giving was full of preservatives, corn, colors, chemicals (pedigree). And it has now bitten me in the butt, my boy has raw spots on his skin now. Only after 30 days, and now he's off it for ab...
