What causes fatal bloat?
What causes fatal BLOAT in Chows. I have had many Chows and never heard of the problem except in horses. Is it their food - or what?

COSTUME - NO NEED - I AM CHOW CHOW AND sooooooooooo sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! I lived in Galveston, Tx for a while. They have Mardi Gras there, too. I had a blind friend who always wanted to go to the parades, but didn't want to have to be in the thick crowds (for obvious reasons). There is a bar ca...

Re: My new "Beware of Dog" sign
Well - that sign wouldn't work if I were your burglar ! I'd say, "OH MY GOD, Look at that prescious baby. I have to go in and see him; I have to hug him." Then, "Oh, look at you! Your are the sweetest, prettiest thing ever!" Then I would probably lay down on your rug and be suffo...

Re: We lost Missy to bloat today
I am so sad for you and your family ....... I take the loss of anyone's Chow very much to my own heart and grief. I lost a (human) child of mine at 6 years of age; and that was 40 years ago. I have transfered all the love I had left to give to every Chow I ever had; every Chow I ever lost, and into ...

Re: We just lost our Suki girl.....
And - scenarios you have asked for; I have a thousand. I honestly do not think that anyone could go wrong with having a Chow if they realize their sensitivity is stronger than other breeds, their loyalty is stronger that other dogs, their memory is phenomenal - for good and for bad events, and their...

Re: We just lost our Suki girl.....
If you are thinking about getting a Chow Chow, get one as young as possible. Observe her parents if at all possible. Impart into her from day one the love, care, hugs and closeness you gave Suki girl. I believe you will be highly rewarded. If you are like me; the only way to ease the heartache of lo...

Re: Hello! I am Schmooshie!
Please read the earlier posts on Chows & Licorice Thread ....... Only the natural, black kind is not bad for your Chow AND, ONLY IN EXTREME MODERATION. I hate it that this generation thinks that red Twizzlers are licorice. NO twizzler of any color should be given to your Chow OR to any human, fo...

I would love to see that link, too. On the home grooming thing: I live so far into the wilderness, I usually have to do the grooming, clipping, bathing, dipping myself. Luna Azul HATES it and really makes me work hard for the honor of grooming her. I usually just break up a dish of treats like Milkb...

Re: blue vs. other colors
My first blue was the most prescious pet I ever had. I saw an article in a Houston newspaper for Chow pups, and made the trip into the Piney Woods to check them out. The parents were free breeders and on site and they had the free-roam of the owners property. So, I get there and the Mom and Dad deci...

Re: HELP...Sheena attacked Troy!
OMG! Yes, it can get very ugly. Please read the following I wrote on the "How to Prevent a Fight" thread. The old chow in the story below actually did attack the young one several times - and yes, holding two leashes, or collars, far enough apart to break up the action is the hardest work ...

While I am on a roll, and finally got images to insert (sort of) I thought I'd post here, too. The top picture is supposed to be on the bottom as it is the present (yesterday). In the bottom 3, Luna was barely home after surgery - you can still see her little shaved belly and shaved fore-paw where t...

The photos came out in reverse order. The last 3 pics should be of a skinny Luna Azul, (less than 40 lb.) 1 week post -op from the emergency surgery(s) I wrote about on Chow Emergencies and On Heat Again. http://img4.glowfoto.com/images/2009/09/09-2121579917M.jpg http://img4.glowfoto.com/images/2009...

Re: chow pup and small dog pack
This post is so cute and funny. My huge chow has 2 cats and her other best friends are 2 tea-cup teeny, tiny Chihuahuas and a young, but full grown, Great Dane.
The most amazing part of this story is - I have a great-grandson (baby) named Carter Cash ! For real !!!

I find myself transfixed on the photos on the top of each page. Those dogs are gorgeous. Can their names be attached on the photos, somehow? Each is more handsome, beautiful than the next or the last. I find that I forget what I was going to post, because I spend so long looking at other people's Ch...

I posted this on Chow Emergencies a few days ago. Because of my selfish stupidity , I almost lost my baby girl to a horrible death. I will NEVER fail to have my beloved Chows spayed again. I will attempt to add a photo (my first try) of what Luna looked like after her second surgery - and when she c...

Under another forum topic (I don't remember where) I offered what worked for our Chow. I have had many chows in my life and none ever had hot-spots except Ms. Piggy (Pilar). We tried everything the vet gave us and the frequent bathing........ no luck. My husband was an operating room nurse, and he b...

You- your family - please need to help your chow. Your answer is here and clear. Barney can have hope. He can live. blue vs. other colors
I noticed in the article section that a writer had a blue chow and had heard that the blues temperment is sweeter. Might sound like hog-wash to some people, but I have had red, cinnamins, and blues. The blues do seem to be calmer and more sociable. In the seventies I was a Siamese cat lover. At any ...

Re: Chow Emergencies
I had barely survived the un-timely death of a young chow; I was NUTS for about 3 months. So, when I got Luna, I made the decision to not have her spade in the hopes to have little Lunas around. In the beginning, Luna came into heat on Feb. 14th and exactly 6 months later for about 5 1/2 years. I no...
