Re: Brutus Earned His AKC Championship
Congrats! It's always refreshing to see owner handled dogs do well In several years when we get our next Chow (I have a young Standard Poodle who is currently keeping me on my toes as we work towards obedience titles) I'm hoping to show him

Re: They shaved my dog completely!! help!
Unless he has some sort of thyroid issue (probably not likely so young) it will probably grow back. However, the wooly undercoat does tend to grow in first, followed by the outer coat. So he may look a bit strange for awhile. When my male was neutered, his forelegs were shaved for the catheter. He l...

Re: Dog dominant with toddler
The dominance theory of training/human-dog relationship is considered fairly outdated these days amongst those who train dogs. My Chows are not trained differently than, say, my Poodle. My female Chow was 6 months old when my child was born. They have a fabulous relationship. You essentially have tw...

Re: Ladies and Gentlemen meet Leo ( regarding pedegree)
I'd say he's all Chow. And as stated, he's considered a red :) For future note, there are no reputable stores that sell puppies, so he likely comes from untested (health-wise) relatives. Not likely to affect him right now, but something to keep an eye on as he grows. (hips, elbows and the like) He i...

Re: Brindle Chow Chow?
Just to clarify, the AKC does not come up with the standards...the national breed club does. If you have issue with a standard, the Chow club would be the place to start, rather than vilifying a simple registration body. Becoming involved with the breed is the best way to have your voice heard. That...

Vote mongering (aka, let's hear it for the Chows!)
My Goose is in a photo contest where her photo is in the Non Sporting Group. There are various criterias it is judged on, but part of the points come from Likes. If you could spare a Like on the photo, it would be much appreciated. Votes are only taken until 3 tomorrow (CST) Thanks so much! https://...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter
You might see behavior changes in a young dog (under 6 or so months), although how much of that would have been normal behavioral changes given their age remains to be seen. But in a dog who is several years old, you're going to see little change, ime. If you're able to keep him confined/away from f...

Re: Women, unsympathetic towards neutering
Is this serious? I am sympathetic towards any of my pets having any surgery. That said, ovariohysterectomies (spaying) is a far more in depth surgery than castration. I did not experience any angst when my female had her ovaries and uterus removed.... As the person who does anesthesia during said su...

Re: The 2013 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
I think he was invited for both GCh points as well as winning the specialty. I wasn't sure if they were attending because of the snow issue. He's on the west coast, and I know sometimes airlines won't ship animals when weather is unsavory.

Re: Extreme shedding...Is this normal?!
Both of my dogs blow coat in clumps. Right now my smooth female is very raggedy looking...we're going to have to sit down and take care of that :) I will say that my male's first shed after he got all of his adult coat in was horrible. He was so sparse that I had his thyroid tested (it was perfectly...

Re: The 2013 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
My dogs' breeder has a dog invited, not sure if they're attending though since they're quite a ways away. He has shown there before, though. I don't have cable, but will be watching the breed rings online.

Re: Can you really have...
We have a household of 3 male dogs and two females, everyone gets along great. We won't, however, have two larger breed females together, just to be safe. My female chow and my female toy poodle are both very docile dogs, temperament wise. Both are over two and mature, and have no issues. And my late...

Re: Wookie is too nice, will he toughen up?
I see you are in the US. US law is against chow chows as the breed is included in a list of dogs that are considered (in your country) as high risk. We don't, as a country, have one list of dogs deemed 'dangerous'. Different counties in the various states may have their own ordinances about various...

Re: Has anybody made their chow Sit-Stay?
It wouldn't be safe to do that here, so I've not trained it. However, it's just a matter of training an out of sight stay. If you look up training for competition obedience, you can probably find tips, as it's one of the exercises in the Open level. It is basically proofing a stay though as, in theo...

Re: My Slush Puppy's Op
You should not have to shave her for the dips, if they take a bit of extra time, the water will saturate through her fur. I've also never heard of Chows having issues with ivermectin injections. Having had her spayed may have helped prevent it becoming more serious..it seems demodex dogs can have fl...

Re: what do you think of my chow chow? is it mixed breed ??
The ears are a little too high set and large, tail seems a bit too long, facial shape is a bit too pointy and that color doesn't exist in Chows. I'd say German Shepherd or another breed that contains the sable color along with Chow. A mix can certainly contain some of the more well known Chow traits.

Having a smooth coat as a parent has no bearing on the coats of the rough coated offspring. Both of my dogs have both smooths and roughs as parents and both have had rough coated siblings go on to successfully show
