Re: Why did you get a chow?

Why did I decide on a chow? I didn't, really. In all honesty, chows/dogs never interested me. I was more of a cat person with cat allergies. It was my sister and her love for chows that introduced me to the breed. She adopted a puppy chow (Tacoma) right out of college. During the first few years of ...

Re: Friendly or not?

Jerilyn: I got a good chuckle when I read your comment about your chows explaining where to find treats. Very clever. Tacoma has no vision problems - at least not from a distance. In fact, on the weekend she spotted and chased a flock of wild turkeys before any of us noticed them. She has arth...

Re: Friendly or not?

Tacoma is 9 and pretty set in her ways... I think it would be very difficult to retrain her if a behavior problem were to surface now. Thankfully there have been no repeat performances.

Re: Friendly or not?

Sirchow, I completely agree - chows are full of surprises. I will have to be more cautious with Tacoma.

Friendly or not?

Generally Tacoma is very sociable. She is friendly with most adults. This past weekend she gave me a scare. She growled at three different people (one she knew very well) for no apparent reason. She was not provoked or startled. She knows enough to walk away when she does not want to be bothered. I ...

Re: Penelope's eye!!!!

I can't say this has ever happened to Tacoma, but my sister's Shar Pei has allergies to black fly and mosquito bites. Her eye or eyes (as the case may be) will get irritated and swell. I would discourage Penelope from scratching as she could cut her eye accidently and cause an infection. Oozing is a...

Re: Milly Ching is having a temper.

It frustrates Tacoma too when her prey escapes... She gives chase to just about anything that stirs - frogs, chipmunks, squirrels, groundhogs, deer, etc. Unfortunately (from her perspective) and fortunately (from mine) she often walks away empty handed. For every failed attempt at a capture, Tacoma ...

Re: Has anyone seen this? Horrific!!

I saw it on the news last night and it made me sick to my stomach. Here is the link to the clip I watched (with some additional information): http://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/51653--badly-abused-dog-has-durham-authorities-searching-for-owner I am appalled by the news. If the...

Re: Suddenly Stubborn? Need advice

Poor Buddha; it sounds like the exercise he is getting at the park is causing some discomfort in his legs. It may take some time for the pain to subside, but I would not be too concerned. I would suggest lifting him into the car, however, I made that mistake once with Tacoma when her arthritis was b...

Wow! Your responses accurately describe Tacoma's vocabulary. I wish I had joined this forum years ago to benefit from your insight. Nine years later and I am still learning!

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
