I just don't even know what to say but wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you and Darkwind. You're going to do what's best for him as you always have, it's just hard.

Melanie, thanks that was excellent and really helpful. I also had to laugh when I read your list of example of high level distractions. A moose really would be a distraction here in NW Indiana but TiVo pulling would be the least of my worries if that happened! I'm excited when I see a chipmunk. I wa...

I wish one of my cats would stand its ground with TiVo. Only my youngest cat Elvis has attempted to leave the second story since TiVo arrived. He chases her every time she tries to set a paw on the first floor and she runs back up stairs where the other cats are watching from between the railings. W...

Melanie, you are absolutely correct, it was the gentle leader halter. I am not familiar with either of those products so did not realize there was a difference between the halter and the harness. Sorry. Is the harness just used for on leash walking or is it something that can be used in training? I'...

Welcome. I'm relatively new too since I just brought home my first chow, TiVo, a few weeks ago. He's almost 6 months now and Simba's coloring sounds a lot like his. He's cream but has darker patches as well, though lately we're referring to him as "surfer dude" because a patch of the fur o...

My 110 pound mal used to back away from his water dish when our kitten "Elvis" would stroll up and start drinking out of it. It amazed me that Yukon would back away and stand there until Elvis was done, and that Elvis at just a few pounds didn't think a thing about drinking out of a water ...

In the few weeks that we've had TiVo he and Gulliver have gotten in to it at least three times and it sounds like all hell is breaking lose. The second day we had TiVo he finished up his food and then marched in to Gulliver's crate with Gulliver still in it and started eating Gulliver's food. When G...

Jeff, I had to let my husband know there was someone else out there besides me that hated flying. His only comment was that he pitied the flight crew if you and I were ever on the same plane.

Just thought I'd mention that in the obedience class the gentle leader harness was the least recommended. I can't remember the specifics because I'm not familiar with it and it wasn't always easy to hear the trainer through the barking but I believe he said that in studies in both Europe and the US ...

Those pictures were great. I can't imagine having a moose in my backyard, I'm thrilled when I see a chipmunk! I do love their faces in the third one "enough is enough". And, congrats to Khana who looks pretty proud of herself as she should be!

My experience is mostly with male dogs, I've only ever had one female and that was many years ago. The males seem to fight occasionally, sometimes you can tell they're just playing but every once in a while it gets more serious. Surprisingly TiVo at just 5 months has on a couple of occasions challen...

TiVo didn't like having his face washed either but then he started getting the stains under his eyes so we wanted to make sure we were washing his face at least once a day to remove it and he finally got used to it. It's my husband's job and he kind of holds his little snout and then wipes his face....

They definitely were not recommending the choke collar in the obedience class, they felt the prong collar was safer (even distribution of correction) and more like a "natural" correction, i.e. dogs nipping at each others necks. However, they said you should use what is best for your dogs p...

Thanks for the good advice. I never thought of liverwurst, that might work better. I quartered hotdogs and he wasn't initially that interested but then he seemed to like them the more he had. I slightly microwaved them first and then patted them down with paper towels so they wouldn't be so greasy b...

Great, I feel bad already because every human I know thinks nothing of flying and I'm scared to death of it and now your chows are flying. Well, maybe if i could take TiVo along in the seat next to me I wouldn't mind it.

In the obedience class we started today they went over the advantages and disadvantages of a regular collar, choke collar and prong collar. They suggested using what was appropriate for your dog. When I went through the class with my shepherd the first couple of classes using a regular collar were m...

Obedience Class

TiVo and I made it through our first of six obedience classes today and he was unbelievably (I mean in a "this is a miracle" sort of way) well behaved. Since this was the intro class the instructor spoke for over an hour. TiVo sat and listened for a while then laid down. There was a lot of...

I know this is a long shot but just thought I'd mention it. We had trouble with our mal limping last year. We kept checking his leg, foot, etc. couldn't find anything. It was close to his annual vet visit so we had the vet look at it and he had a tumor growing under the pad of his foot. Once the vet...

That is such a pathetic story. I don't know who makes me madder the trainer or the owner. I think, unfortunately, the bottom line is that a lot of people don't want to take the time to train their dog properly. I know a puppy is a handful. I have occasionally referred to TiVo as "satan's spawn&...
