Re: Why do chows have so bad reputation?
Never blame the animal for human issues. Chow's earned the rep, of course challenging one probably shouldn't be your goal in life. We have bones from everything from mice up to foxes, coyotes, geese, turkeys and the confrontation never lasts long. Back in the 80's everybody wanted one without unders...

Normal for us as well. Been Chow's around here for decades and everything you say is proper and with same results here. We also handle rescues and find they respond very well to this treatment as well.

Re: Leashing Pulling Problem
Well generally that's a you problem. To divorce yourself from the issue, add another lead (Dollar Store) to your pups collar. let it drag on the ground, make sure it's long enough to drag about 10 feet behind. Every time pup starts pulling step on this lead and loosen the regular one your holding. O...

Re: Does anyone else find that most other dogs don't like your Chow:
Generally what your seeing is fear reaction in other dogs towards your chow. The Chow tail up high sends alot of dogs into challenge mode, just usually not brave enough to test them. Although I have yet see one attempt what your describing even with rescues. Generally dogs stay away from chows they ...

Re: Bad reaction of my chow chow after cutting off all his hair.
A shame you didn’t learn more about Chow’s before acquiring. Never. Ever. Shave your Chow. Mother Nature is far smarter than people. As long as their winter coat is groomed out in spring your good. Never had a Chow not able to go through summer. Ever. They are far more hearty a breed than implied by...

Big bear passing on
Some of you may remember 12 years ago, we introduced FengHuang and her brother ShenLung. FengHuang passed at 5 years, and sadly ShenLung has passed. He lasted 5 months longer than the vets gave him with anemia, a massively enlarged spleen and cancer in his liver. He had a great 8 weeks of vacation, ...

Note: They are mean aggressive bears, if you pick a fight with one. They earned that rep, and they shouldn't be ashamed about it. I used to have a gal who was the Empress of the Known Universe, and nobody in their right mind challenged that. In the thousands of dogs she saw in here life, not one, sa...

Re: Chows and children
They are around here, but they have been socialized with neighbourhood children since arriving. I have had Chow's my entire life, starting when I was about 10. Our current big male didn't care for kids when he was young and would walk away or inform them to piss off. Issues usually ended there. At a...

Our male was fixed at an early age as per the requirements from the breeder, so no idea on if he will just stop. Probably not. He has been getting away with it after all.

Re: Raising A Chow pup and having a child a couple years after.
Personally grew up with chows, never had an issue with friends or myself. Currently have two chows, they adopted several kids in the neighbourhood, they can pretty much do anything around them. Our youngest at 6 is not fond of kids in snow suits. But she hasn’t offered to eat any. Just goes around. ...

Re: Dog started growling at child
OK, so you have Chow's, but don't seem to understand them. One it's a challenge, two jealousy (over female), but why you haven't had them both fixed already is beyond understanding. And you have heard of the "terrible two's" Chow's are famous for, right? OK, the fix will help some things, ...

Patience. And keep going through these processes. Chow’s take awhile to calm down, usually about 5 yrs old. Our big boy was similar, couldn’t care less anymore at 11 yrs old. Big chane was at 5 yrs, now he even acts like the puppy he never was.

Ha! ShenLung is currently 11, very active as mentioned in previous posts and still more than capable and willing to run for an hour or two. He has no grey, but did start losing muscle mass this year. He lost the tendon in his tight rear knee but has already walked it off. Pretty sure he’ll hit 15.

Re: buying from superpuppyshop...scam?
That’s a pretty cheap price for a rare breed animal. But, if your looking for love I guess it doesn’t matter. Lots of rescues around as well. If your looking for purebred and reputable, perhaps a chow is out of your financial range.

Happy Summer Everyone!
So we just got back from 2 weeks camping at Bon Echo Park with the bears. They have taken to 3-5hrs of Paddle Boarding daily. Everytime we paddled down to the dog park, we got a lot of lookers as FuShiLu asked me to remove her floatation vest so she could launch herself into the air and swim the rem...

Patience and time. Young chows can take awhile to relax. The rough thing is it may take a few years, but it gets better each year. They really calm down after five years.

Re: Any rescue chow owners that can offer some advice?
I handle quite a few chow fosters as well as other dogs, as mentioned above good advice. Another thing is to let a long lead drag from the colar back behind your chow. If he starts giving you issue, don’t scold, just talk calmly while walking up/on the lead to his color, forcing him to lay down. Har...

Re: How to get male chow to stop marking his territory in the house?
For one, thats not territorial unless another animal is present. It’s dominance. Try to get the chow’s sent in the areas where peeing is happening. Is this when your around? Spray bottle might work. With a good ‘no’ in a stern voice and a quick trip outside. Is this when your away? Harder. Try confi...
