Same with Sumo. Suddenly the tail becomes a strange appendage that follows him around and needs to be pounced on. Sometimes he bites himself so hard I'm sure he'll hurt himself. But he just keeps doing it, round and round until he gets dizzy, I guess. Both of my other Chows did the same as puppies. ...

Ziggy, you look exactly like my girl Keiko did at your age. I wonder if you're related? Welcome to the site!
Tovya, Well, I don't think that anyone who has the intention of leaving a dog in a crate for ten hours a day while they are at work should ever get a dog to start with, period.
Who on earth ever said anything about 10 hours a day? I would not have dogs at all if tha...
I'm sorry, but I think that it is just plain selfish of someone with a fenced in dog proof backyard to keep a dog in a crate instead of letting it have fresh air, sunshine, and a bit of real space. I wonder...have you ever had kids? Would you leave a crawling or toddling ch...
Maybe you should leave the crate outside where the pup has the company of your adult Chow? Or is your girl already kept inside with her?
My girl has free run of the house and yard. Sumo is in the living room, so he can see her all day. She does keep him company by l...

Well, Matthew, our large backyard is fully fenced, with a wooden fence and gate that he's already shown a preference for chewing. It also has fruit trees that drop bird-eaten fruit, flowers, a few weeds, possibly spiders (read about ciaobella's black widow incident), and 90 degree weather, even with...

Crate Training -- Need Your Advice, Please

Sumo (11 weeks old) HATES to be put in his crate when I have to leave the house. He practically screams bloody murder. I can hear him way out to the garage, and once I return, he starts up again as soon as he hears the car pull up. I don't know what to do, I feel like a bad mother deserting my child...

Sumo is only 11 weeks old. I wouldn't dream of putting a choke collar on him. He's our third chow. The others were older than him when they came home, so this early puppy behavior is a bit different for us. But I have learned that Chows obey you because they want to, not because you force or punish ...

Thanks so much, y'all! Sumo and I have our homework assignment for the weekend. We'll work diligently on the sit stay. Despite all of his chew toys, he's right now tearing into a cardboard paper towel roll instead of my poor ankles. What great ideas!

Okay, I'm trying the walk away and ignore. But what do you do when he's following you as you walk away, trying to bite on your pants leg and your ankles ??

Same mouthing issue here with Sumo. He's just 11 weeks old, and I guess it's a phase they go through. He only does it to the humans -- he doesn't do it at all with our 9 year old Chow girl. She growls at him when he gets too rough, and he stops. The strict "NO" and the "OUCH" are...

He has the same intensity in the eyes as Chiyonofuji. I only hope he doesn't get as big!

Is anyone feeding Inova EVO? What do you think of it? Just wondering about the 42% protein and 22% fat content. It is supposed to be very close to feeding raw, but I've read some threads elsewhere about kidney problems.
