Re: Long-snouted chow chows
The chow was like that to begin with! Some breeders are changing the look for more dramatic outcomes.I like the more moderate look.I find they have less trouble cooling down and breathing.Look at these chows in USA ,when they were first imported.

Because he is a chow.lol.He will adjust ;dont worry. dont force him;he will come when he wants.Chows arent `cuddly` dogs;they come when they want affection.

Re: Raw food
Have you vetted her? there could be another reason for her not eating.Raw?? well, salmonella is a concern with raw.I know they are supposed to be `safe` but my vet tells me every week he has people who feed raw in his practice with ill dogs.So ..it sounds like she she should be tested since she is yo...

Re: Chow puppy with pink nose?
Hmm,I have a cream ,a cinnamon and have had several dilutes throughout the years.Did you buy her in a puppy store? or is she a registered girl? She shouldnt have that nose or greenish eyes,..Sorry just telling you how it is.It is not the breed standard. My cream girl has great black mouth tissues and...

Re: Distemper question
Umm..did you not get your dog vaccinated? I dont understand what you mean by `the virus wearing off`? Please vaccinate your dogs.these diseases are deadly. I know there is a school of thought that vaccines are `harmful` so are the diseases they prevent. Good luck with your new chow;please vet her/hi...

Re: Entropion
Entropian surgery is essential.I have 3 rescue chows at the present time. The 12 year old girl whom I have had for 5 years, went blind because her owner didn`t get the surgery done.By the time I got her it was too late. There is no cure besides surgery;why the breeder would tell you that is strange.Did...

Re: ? blackness of tongue indicates 'purity' ?
Any dog with chow in them has a white spot on their back ,buried in all that fur.I have had dilute chows. They are the cream, cinnamon and blue colors you hear about. Ive had all 3 and more than a few in my 30 years + of chows.Their tongues may be lighter or darker and I k now they were purebred. My cr...

Re: Does Your Chow "Hunt"?
I have had chows that `hunt`.In fact I dont let them off a leash in our neighborhood as lots of wandering cats and unleased dogs.Chows were used for hunting, guarding etc. They have a long history so they have been used for most services.Any cats in my yard were not safe;my female didnt like them and ...

Re: are chow allergic to fish??
Umm,just read the rest of your question..take him to the vet.Ticks are serious business. And he was much to young to have his coat shaved before he was full grown.Good luck;but please vet him..he should be getting vaccines about now so a vet visit is imperative.

Re: are chow allergic to fish??
Umm,well, chows were imported to China by the mongols around 2000 years ago;so I believe fish was on the menu throughout their evolution there.

Re: Salmon Oil & Coconut Oil for Chow Chow
I give EFAs as they are called in their food,so a good fish oil, from a reputable pet store. Also the coconut oil should be unrefined. The refined stuff is passed through charcoal to get rid of the pulp.,so it isnt really the best thing. It is internal useage for both.Be careful with the EFAs.too much w...

Umm,I wanted to comment about the neutering or spaying;most vets now ask you to wait till they are about a year,so they can mature a bit more. There are less health issues with more mature chows being altered.

Re: My Chow Chow keeps getting attacked by other dogs
Yep..so true.Because they were original dogs, well, closer than others, they have that `predator` scent and other dogs attack out of fear. As you may know, chows get blamed many times when there is a fight;unfairly, but because some uninformed people think they are ` vicious`,they get blamed.I wear a bod...

Re: who uses what to treat hot spots?,,,
I think hot spots are allergy type thing.Chows seem to develop alopecia lots. I have a spray called Dermacool HC; it has a mild freezing and antibiotic.Too much prednisone is not good for a chow;they can get Cushings Disease. Peroxide dries out and inflames skin;if used too much.Look it up.I like wh...

One of my chows had a torn cruciate and I did the surgery. Restriction after and MSM ,glucosamine, chrondotin supplemts for dogs.
She recovered well. I think the full on operation will be more successful in the long term.Good luck.

Re: are chow allergic to fish??
Did you vet him? I am rather disturbed the groomer trimmed his coat before he was full grown! It sounds like he has an allergy of some sort .Chows were in China for many thousand years;they probably ate lots of fish! After all the things you stated ,I think a visit to a vet used to chows and familia...

Re: Chow puppy with pink nose?
Make sure the breeder is OFA and CERF tested.I disagree about the weight of a chow.Heavier bone carries more weight.I have had both heavy bone and more moderate. If the breeder is one who cares about breeding for health and soundness , and not only treating their kennel as livestock you will get a go...

Re: When do chows ear stand up?
Well,I think they should be up now..usually they are up by six months at the latest..A flowered tongue can happen. Is she a registered dog? A cinammon is a dilute ;so sometimes their pigment is not good. I have had several chows good off leash..it`s usually the other dogs outside, charging and growlin...

She is still young too.One of my girls who is 11 and a half, lets her tail hang at times. Some chows are a little lazier than others ,I believe. Check the tail set..if it is high up ,then she will get start carrying it packed most of the time as she matures. Does she display any other confidence issu...

Hello.I live in Canada and saw your site a few days ago. I have had the blessing to have been a chow mom for over 35 years. Currently I live with 4 rescues!
I love it!
Understanding goes a long way to help when you adopt a rescue chow..I consider myself fortunate to have them in my life.
