11 mo. old chow just bit us for 2nd time in 2 wks.
My boyfriend & I have an 11 mo. old male chow & I want to start by saying that words truly cannot explain how much we love him. We put him before ourselves & take him everywhere with us for companionship & socialization. He frequents countless stores, malls, outdoor restaurants &...

Re: Dog bone for Walter
Nylabones are great. You could also fill a Kong with peanut butter & then freeze it overnight. We love the bully sticks for our chow.. they're clearly his favorite. He can chew through a spiral one in a couple of hours though, so I recommend getting the braided bully sticks as they take much lon...

Re: Puppy aggressively bites ankles on every walk
My chow puppy Dolce went through a terrible phase like this at about the same age as yours. It lasted for I believe a couple of months but it felt like so much longer. Out of nowhere he would wrap his little front legs around one of mine & hold on while biting. It was quite stressful & like ...

Re: World's friendliest chow?
Kudos to you & your chow chow, Ruth! I believe the majority of it is about how the chow chow is raised. We have our first chow Dolce, a cream who is 9 months old & he has truly caused people's jaws to drop at how friendly he is. We did a lot of research on the breed ahead of time to prepare ...

Re: convenia injection and Apoquel tablets
We are currently dealing with an allergy in our 9 month old chow puppy as well. We've just begun a "food trial" wherein we've chosen a limited ingredient food (only has one source of protein - lamb) and it is the only thing he can have for a month or two & we will closely watch for sig...

Re: Puzzle toys
Hi Tychowgirl, Great thread! I've been looking at dog puzzles for my future chow puppy as well. My boyfriend and I will be getting our chow puppy this summer and I have looked into these puzzles for him to keep busy during the day while we are at work. Nina Ottosson makes a good line of dog puzzles ...

Home-Grooming
Hi Everyone, I'm looking for some tips on trimming our chow at home rather than ever taking him to a groomer. I've known one too many people who have taken their various breeds of long-haired dogs to the groomer and they've ended up being shaved without asked. I know there are also wonderful groomer...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
Yes, that's a really good point. And how you do it is up to you. My daughter grooms both the dogs on the floor for daily upkeeps. She just gets a blanket and sits down their with them and brushes away. Good bonding time, but she generally will end up brushing the same spots over and over. Good for ...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
I didn't mention this, but start grooming early with your puppy. You don't have to really be serious about it, just go through the motions so that the puppy becomes comfortable with handling. You want to handle his feet, ears, look at his teeth, and handle his tail. The idea is to build trust. At s...

Re: Has anyone purchased a chow chow from D&M Farm?
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT purchase a chow from D&M Farm. I have purchased a chow from D&M Farm and I have had nothing but issues (parents were Lila and Teddy). More specifically, our chow has had nothing but issues. He is nearing his 2 year birthday and when he was 1 year, was diagnosed with...

Re: Which face is indicative of a healthier chow?
Going purely by the photo I would say that there is some problem but that could just as easily be seasonal hay fever. As his face is not badly stained...and I have seen creams far worse affected than this I would say it is not a bad problem....but....entropien is in the chow breed and sometimes com...

Re: Which face is indicative of a healthier chow?
I am a fan of the open face, but then that is just me. Both types are beyond beautiful. Eyes are just one aspect of the dog. Look at both the parents, and find out as much information as you can about their health. Chows have a number of skeletal problems, especially with their elbows and hips. My ...

Re: Which face is indicative of a healthier chow?
To some extent it is the luck of the draw once you have ruled out if parents have health problems but if you did a numbers poll I would imagine squishier have more problems. But you still get entropien in open faces. One of my friends with a beautifully open faced pretty girl has just had to have b...

Which face is indicative of a healthier chow?
Hi everyone, My boyfriend and I have just put a deposit down on a chow chow puppy but I wanted to know which type of chow face is indicative of a potentially healthier chow? Is it the adorable squished, wrinkly face that I've seen in photos & loved, or the more pointed nose/snout? I am asking be...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
Plenty of great replies already, but i will add my 2 cents. Pin brush is essential for daily upkeep. Finish brush/slicker is also needed. I also use a comb for around the ears to dispel any knots. And i know it seems like a lot, but i highly recommend a rake to work the back end. Mind you those las...

Has anyone purchased a chow chow from D&M Farm?
Hi everyone, My boyfriend and I recently put down a small deposit on a chow chow puppy from D&M Farm in Fairborn, OH. We visited their farm and were able to see both the adult dogs & the puppies. I would like to know, however, if anyone has had experience purchasing a chow chow from this bre...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
Everyone has their favorite type of grooming equipment. I thing everyone should have some type of pin brush, slicker, and comb as well as nail clippers. You will alwo need a small pair of scissors to trim the hair from the pads of the feet. Always remember to put your grooming equipment up so puppy...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
Well done asking questions and getting prepared before hand. :D I use a slicker brush and do what is called line brushing. It is very very important to get down to the skin with your brushing it allows the air to circulate keeping them warm or cool depending on the season and also goes a long way t...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate
There are probably many opinions on that subject. I have a couple of pin brushes that I like to use. I will brush both with the direction the hair grows and against the growth, and tend to concentrate more on areas that will mat on my dogs. My wife likes to take a damp towel and clean their paws wh...

New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciated!
Hi everyone, My boyfriend and I are adopting our first chow chow & have a lot of questions because we are new to the breed. We want to make sure our fluff ball is well cared for! Our puppy is not quite ready to leave his mom but I want to be prepared as soon as we have him. That being said, I ap...
