Re: Is this PUPPY SMOOTH OR ROUGH COAT!?? Help PLEASE!!

Looks rough coat to me, but not with a closed face. Some are fluffier than others, I think maybe they have fluffier coats where the weather is cold or it snows so ask the breeders where they are at. In the tropics I haven't seen one of those super puffy coated chows, but we do have rough coated as a...

Re: Considering a Chow- asking for advice :-)

Maybe I just had bad luck with my dog and that yorkie (teacup variations in breeds tend to be fragile). If you are willing to train him it sounds like many others have been able to have peaceful cohabitation with cats and their chow. I really recommend the chow as a breed: little to no barking, almo...

Re: Considering a Chow- asking for advice :-)

Maybe if it's very socialized from early on with cats and small dogs, but its iffy. Chows have a high prey instinct so they tend to chase smaller animals, also even if they get along with the cat they play kinda rough so I wouldn't really be comfortable having both a cat and a chow. That's just my t...

Summer 2014

I thought maybe its easier to post new pictures in a different topic, could hardly get to the new files in owner's picture gallery.
This is my Bilbo at 4 weeks, catching a breeze and some sunlight on the balcony.

Re: anyone with cream chow?

This is my Bilbo at 11 weeks, never had a bath yet but I wipe him down. I brush him but not as often as I should. He goes to the park every day and rolls around on the grass, sometimes gets his paws really dirty, but a puppy wipe or wet towel cleans that up, have used dry shampoo maybe three times m...

Re: Am I being too sensitive?

Thanks again :) am using my harness and using the advice and tips I got from you all. We started learning Down yesterday and he is ok at it when he doesn't get frustrated that the Sit didn't earn him a treat LOL. Am working on the mouthing and will just try to be very patient about this and not be a...

Re: Am I being too sensitive?

Thanks so much guys, I feel better having heard from all of you that he is not a little monster dog and that this guy was way out of line. I am so upset with this training thing because I was trying to be all responsible and both trainers I had contact with have been awful. Will keep doing all the s...

Re: Am I being too sensitive?

Ok, now I am really really confused and frustrated. My puppy is IMO perfectly normal for a CHOW (kinda dominant and independent, but also very friendly with everyone in my building and in the dog park). The puppy gymboree / clicker trainer did the alpha roll thing on Bilbo on Monday. I was so shaken...

Re: Am I being too sensitive?

Thanks so much guys! I will definitely NOT be calling this trainer back. Will keep interviewing and using positive reinforcement in the meantime. On a more positive note, I finally found puppy gymboree (socialization) in Santo Domingo, this Mexican vet who moved here opened a place. Bilbo starts on ...

Am I being too sensitive?

Hi all: I want to know if I am being too sensitive about this, coddling my Bilbo too much. I interviewed a trainer yesterday that came highly recommended by my veterinarian and I really don't think he knows what he is talking about. This was a "pre-training" where they tell you what and ho...

Words for Training

Hi all, I have read Victory's post on bite inhibition (thanks BTW, has been most helpful and I use your tips daily) but I have a doubt: some people advise that a different word be chosen for biting or nipping, that instead of just saying "no" and doing the ignoring or time-out you say anot...

Re: New Member with New ChowChow

I bought my puppy a dry shampoo and some wipes on amazon made specially for dogs since I can't bathe him yet, he smells yummy and is quite clean. I don't think they like getting baths, at least none of my dogs have liked getting full baths and blow-dry. Try to only do full baths when the dog is real...

Re: Very young puppy - house-training

UPDATE: Bilbo seems to train himself more and more, he will now poo only on grass and pee on grass during the day, at night I can't take him to the park so he uses wee wee pads, but no accidents at all this past week. I am in awe of this puppy he is the smartest dog ever! We start classes with a tra...

Re: Prey instinct is it a bad thing?

My first chow was a sweet but very big chow named Blackie. His bestie was a yorkie whose owner left him off leash to roam the neighborhood and they loved each other and played together in my yard where the yorkie would somehow end up, shared food dishes etc., until... Chows play hard, that shaking t...

Re: Very young puppy - house-training

Thanks it really helps hearing from someone else. Thats what I am doing now, but I wasn't sure if it was all right and I didn't want to mess him up because of mixed signals. The vet said all vaccines will be up to date at 12 weeks so I guess that's when I can take him to the park for the first time ...

Very young puppy - house-training

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have had two chows in the past, blackie and sushi, both when I was a child. Last week I bought a really young chow (mix?) puppy off a seller (I live in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic). I know its wrong and it supports puppy mills etc., but I just couldn't stand t...
