Re: My Puppy Won't Stop Nipping/Play Biting

when he is not excited he doesnt bite. That reminds me of another revelation that helped me understand his nipping. This may not apply to all pups, but mine nips when he's hungry. I was feeding him 3-4 times per day when he was young. So once I figured out this signal for hunger, it was easy to get...

Re: My Puppy Won't Stop Nipping/Play Biting

Sounds like you have a "strong-willed" Chow. :? Mine wasn't nearly as stubborn when he was a pup, but I do remember a turning point. I think I sort of growled at him. Mostly I took an aggressive stance and projected dominance. At the time I felt really bad because he went to a hidi...

Re: Is it right for us? (Family with small child)

Socialization begins with the breeder. Just by chance, the breeder of my Chow had young kids and had everyone in her family handle the pups from the very beginning. I think this helped a lot with the socialization process. Although I've always supervised carefully when he interacts with kids, my Cho...

Re: My dog is being aggressive.

So today I took my 2 year old chow to his first dog training class...I've heard that chows can be aggressive but it was still embarrassing. I just wanted to pick him up and leave. You should not be embarrassed for your Chow. The trainer is the one who should be embarrassed. Yes, leave and find anot...

Re: Is my 13 week old pup too friendly with strangers?

Although Chows are generally aloof with strangers and are excellent guard dogs, each individual Chow is unique. Even pups from the same litter can have very different character traits. In asking breeders questions about the parents of pups I was considering, the phrase "doesn't know a stranger&...

Re: Chewing on the same spot

You've probably done this, but check closely to make sure there's no foxtail/burr/thorn/splinter near the hotspot. If the spray doesn't work and he keeps at it, you may need to put a cone (or similar gadget) on him. He'll hate that and you may need to rearrange furniture around the house so he doesn...

Thanks, RD. Rory & Amber look great, too. Their technique is fine, you just need to upgrade their phones. :D But low-light indoor shots are always tough.

...super friendly to humans but not so much to other dogs. Puppy classes are great, but a supervised puppy play-group is also necessary if he's not mixing well with other dogs. Supervision by a good trainer is essential. They can observe and hopefully identify what's going on in the puppy brain and...

Re: New Chow Owner Needs Direction

I'm thinking of getting a 7mnth old chow puppy...It seems that the breed is a little lazy. I tend to run a few miles every other day or so... We are also an active hiking and camping family. In reading blogs it seems that Chows have very little interest in activity. There's a large range of size, b...

Thor is looking very handsome. Hopefully those teenage years keep going smoothly for you! Thanks, Cocoa. 10 1/2 months now and all is still well! Cross fingers, knock on wood and all that stuff. He'd becoming a handsome, well rounded adult. Love Thor - it's been fun to watch him grow! Thanks, Glue....

Re: soon to be a chow chow owner!

Alice, you will want to check with the vet that gives your pup his initial checkup, but I was advised not to take my pup to public areas until he had completed his vaccinations. That meant for about 6 weeks after he arrived at 8 weeks of age, he was limited to my backyard and 3 other family members'...

Re: Sleeping

When he gets up he will usually pee and then go back to sleep... Just sounds like he needs to pee. I agree it's a good thing he asks to go out. I imagine pups are just like human kids; some take longer than others to sleep through the night without needing to pee. You may want to remove his water b...

Re: Grooming puppy

I groom in multiple short sessions throughout the day. That way it doesn't get tedious for either of us. I found a comb best when he was younger (2-6 months) and a pin-brush easier when his puppy fuzz was mostly gone. But I have smooth coated Chow, so you may need other tools.

Re: huffing....snorting

My 9-month-old caught a cold once when he was much younger. Aside from the snorting & sneezing, he also licked his nose more than usual (it was runny). It took a few days before he completely recovered without any medical intervention. He slept lots, but that's normal for young pups. He also ret...

Re: Can a chow chow puppy or adult be alone from 1 to 9 hour

Just a quick reply for now. A puppy should not be left alone for much more than an hour. You risk all sorts of behavioral and psychological issues by leaving them alone during the impressionable first months. This is especially true if they're confined indoors (usually means a crate). Just my opinio...

Re: Healthy Treats

With the many issues of giving any treats made in China, I started dehydrating chicken or beef for my two Chowdren. Another vote for DIY treats. My pup prefers something chunky that he can get a good crunch on. So I cut rough cubes and bake them in an oven at 250º for ~1 hr., then finish them off i...

Re: Does Your Chow "Hunt"?

My pup goes nuts for squirrels, rabbits and rodents. He's curious about cats, but doesn't really "hunt" them in the same way. He knows birds can fly, so mostly ignores them. Hasn't met any larger animals, so not sure how he'll respond there. He always wants to greet other dogs, but only me...
