Re: Does Anyone Let Their Chow Walk Without a Leash?

I think its a combination of lots of different factors as to whether they are good off the leash....their personality is a massive factor. Oscars personality is very loving and caring and attentive but only when we are in the house.....as soon as he is out, he couldn't care less if i was there or no...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

Thanks guys - this is brilliant. 'Crumpet' - I'm really pleased that wookie and rio get on so well....it does seem rare with Chows - you are right 'Christina chow mum' all stories on here suggest chows are less likely to get on with other dogs. Its GREAT to hear it can work. I will be having another...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

PS - does anyone else find that other (non chow) dog owners are less inclined to let their dogs play with your Chows? When Oscar was a small pup, I had tones of people coming over to pet and fuss him, but now he is a large gorgeous lump of fur, they all seem a bit scared of him and wont let their do...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

Wow, thanks all. Very helpful indeed. I honestly thought getting a male companion for Oscar would be the best move, especially as he is intact and keeping a female and male apart would be difficult. (Oscar is also very *Censored Word* aware it seems and shoved his nose under every dog he can get to)...

Re: Does Anyone Let Their Chow Walk Without a Leash?

kitten1246; do u think they are so good because they are around other dogs that are so well behaved? I only ask because Oscar would always follow Max (my yorkie) when i called them back.......now he is older he doesnt copy max as much and is more interested in seeing other dogs when he is out. Of co...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

very helpful - thank you Christina. Oscar is 100% chow and has many traits but aloof isnt one if them. He is very happy to see/acknowledge/fuss over anything and everyone he meets when out. He is a little 'on guard' if other dogs come to my house but soon settles down. I will get loads more toys for...

Re: Does Anyone Let Their Chow Walk Without a Leash?

This is something that I am working on with my trainer.....i was confident that (one day) Oscar could be let off the lead in parks/near the lakes / beaches etc but my trainer informed me last week that she would not risk it with him. He is not food motivated when out, does not concentrate on me what...

Playmate for my Chow Chow

Hello, I've got my gorgeous Chow Chow Oscar who is now 7 months. I do have another dog, Max, who is a 10 year old Yorkie but they do not get on well at all. Oscar is young and really wants to play with Max who is not interested at all. I tend to keep them apart and they only spend time with each oth...

Apologies Mokoto - I did write a long reply a week or so ago to your post but it obviously didnt send properly. )-: We got Oscar from Bristol and only found out that there was a breeder in Barry once we registered ours at the vets. I was searching for a breeder for months before we went to Bristol. ...

Cant socialise my pup for another 2.5 wks - any tips?

Hi All, I've been reading through lots of posts and have come across great tips from chow chow owners but I was wondering if you had any for my specific circumstances. Basically I picked up Oscar last week and took him straight to the vets for his 2nd vaccination but the vet said that it had been 18...

Re: Harness Size

hi chowjeff I've just got my chow chow last week and taken him to the pet shop where they measured him and fitted a small padded harness with adjustable straps....however as Oz will no doubt be a large dog by the time he's one, so I will need to replace this with a medium/large harness. Definitely t...

Re: Just got a chow pup!

Hello, I picked my chow chow pup up last week and am in love with him - he's been a sweetheart from the start; sleeps well, toilet trained and has a wonderful personality. We called him Oscar but my son insists on calling him Oz (the great and powerful Oz) and he responds well to both. Oscar is 4 mo...
