Re: Is it right for us? (Family with small child)

If you get a puppy that grows up with your small dogs you should have no problem, providing you are dealing with a good bloodline. My chow came from a breeder whose entire family was in on the hobby and all pups were handled by kids from the time of birth. The breeder herself had 6 children so there...

Re: Chow chow and relations with other dogs

Hi there! Your English is very good. My chow chow just turned 2. When we got him at 8 weeks we already had an 11 yr old toy breed and a 4 year old rescued husky mix. Wookie was heavily socialized and spent a lot of time with my mother's dog and the dogs of my friends. He gets along very well with do...

Re: Puppy Buyer Beware!

Normally I avoid threads like these, but as the proud, happy owner of one of Carla’s Rhenegade Chows I feel I should offer my testimony in her defense. First of all, kudos to Carla for being one of the dwindling number of breeders who raises open faced chows as opposed to only the heavy boned, wrink...

Re: I desperately need advice!

It sounds like a typical scenario where 2 chows of the same *Censored Word* have difficulty coexisting peacefully. They are both female, right?

Re: anyone with cream chow?

I have a cream boy who loves the woods, creeks, swamps, you name it. He can get very dirty, but I must say he is very tolerant of letting me wipe his feet and body as much as I need to. Also, chows are so clean that they will spend time cleaning themselves. I've watched him pull debris out of his fu...

My chow gets along very well with my toy mix as well as 2 toy dogs that my friend has. He has grown up with them, so that may make a difference.

Re: Is it common for Chows to itch a lot?

I know that 2 of my dogs itch frequently, not due to fleas, and that when I give them sardines I see a marked reduction in the amount of scratching they do.

Re: BED OR NO BED?!?! That is the question.

In my experience, my current chow and previous chow mix both like to lie on hard surfaces most of the time. I suspect they've got adequate padding with all that fur!

Question about changes once my puppy reaches adulthood

Hi, everyone. I've mentioned several times that I do have a 10 month old chow and that he is really good with other dogs (as well as cats). I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. I have also admitted that I am new to puppies since I have always rescued adults dogs. Pups are a lot of trouble but with...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

Thanks for your kind words. Actually, Wookie and Rio both seem to really like other dogs. Wookie has been raised with both male and female dogs as well as small and large breeds. Rio was in foster care for 1.5 years before being adopted and he was kept on a farm with about 15 other dogs for company....

Re: Chows and Baths

My chow runs in the woods a lot and we are forever combing burrs out of his fur and wiping mud off his legs from him running in the creeks out there. Sometimes he comes home with his face covered in black muck!! So, even though they are a clean breed, I have given him a good rinse with the hose and ...

Re: Playmate for my Chow Chow

I got my Wookie at 8 weeks old and he has grown up with a 4 year old rescue dog I adopted last year. Wookie idolizes and adores his big brother. He follows him everywhere and whines for him; they go running together in the woods for an hour each morning and evening. Wookie is now 10 months old and I...

'Purebred' question

I would like to pose a genuine question about something that has been bothering me in regards to what constitutes a purebred Chow. I’ve heard people suggest that if a Chow has a merle pattern it must be because there is something else mixed in the bloodline somewhere, hence the dog cannot be 100% pu...

Re: Brindle Chow Chow?

He looks like a Merle to me. AKC doesn't recognize Merles, but I don't hold the AKC in such high regard anyway. Their 'standards' have really hurt this breed and a lot of others as far as I'm concerned, so I wouldn't worry about whether Leo's color is officially recognized by them. Whatever his colo...

Re: Women, unsympathetic towards neutering

Yes, my post was in response to your original message. I can appreciate it if you meant it in jest, but I don't think it is a lack of humor on our part that we didn't take it that way. The sad fact is, there are many human males who feel exactly the way you described when it comes to neutering male ...

Re: Women, unsympathetic towards neutering

Just for fun, let's throw a little education into the mix and add that a man getting a vasectomy is not the same thing as a male dog being neutered. Not even close. A man who gets the v-snip is not desexed, he's still fully a man, he just can't knock anyone up. He still has his testicles, for heaven...

Re: Pet Insurance - which company would you refer?

I decided to get insurance for my new puppy. My vet thinks it is a good idea and I have 3 friends who have it and personally recommend it. One friend really likes her policy through SPCA. She has used them with good, efficient results. I chose Pet's Best after doing days of research. You will find p...

Re: Desexing question?

I have a much adored purebred male pup who is now 5 1/2 months old and thriving. I brought him home at 8 weeks and he was neutered at 6 weeks per the discussion I had with my breeder. Chows are my favorite breed, but all breeds have a caveat or two and with chows it is that they are prone to not get...
