Re: Neuter my 6 months Chow or Not. Need opinions!!
agree with all above who recommend neutering. I believe it's best for their health and temperment.
Due to some health issues my boy has, I think my adopted chow chow was neutered too young but everything I've heard and read recommends neutering.

As a dog lover and based on everything I've heard and read, definitely, neuter both. The pug now and the chow at 1 year old. Not only is it best for the health and well being of the dogs, It's just the responsible thing to do.

Re: Meet Pumpkin
thank you for adopting your beautiful girl : ) It took about two years for our shelter rescued chow chow to fully trust us. Poor dude had spent his first year in the shelter, rescued as a pup from a back yard in winter with his mom tied to a tree. We just had to give him space (don't push) and time ...

Agree with the introduction but would still suggest the kids not force themselves on the dog. I'd suggest the dog be allowed to observe until she is ready to trust. Sounds like you're on the right path. GOod luck!

OMG! How can you say the treatment is not harsh? Arsenic is injected in their back to kill the worms in their hearts. Heartworm treatment is very hard and very painful but, must be done.
How is he doing?

whatever her coat/breed, she is adorable. I suggest not worrying about her make up, just love and take care of her : ).

Re: My girl had a grand mal seizure
Ruth, I'm so sorry to hear of your baby's health struggles at such a young age. I can only assume due to overbreeding. I've had several mixed breed dogs (I'm older and so were they when they passed), now have a 4 year old rescued full bred chow chow with bad hips, partially torn ligament and sebaceo...

Re: Male or female as second dog (puppy)?
agreed, neuter your male and bring in a neutered female. In my experience, females tend to wiggle their way into being the boss but that has not been an issue in either of the male/female pairs I've lived with.
Please please rescue!

Re: Chow Chow hotspots and hair care questions
poor baby. Skin issues can be so hard to diagnose. My Chow's hair loss turned out to be sebaceous adenitis which is being treated with a tube of Dermoscent each week between his shoulders. He will always be susceptible to bacterial skin infections because of this condition. It took a doggie dermatol...

Re: Entropion
Alas, just one of the health problems brought on by selective breeding and inbreeding in an attempt to meet a made up breed standard. IMO Chow Chows would have been better left with the fox face and longer legs and bodies the original dog had. Too many dogs suffer as a result of designer breeding. I...

hmmm, sure looks like a chow to me, assuming she usually holds her tail against her back. You can have a DNA test done for about $100 if you really want to know. Aside from that, leadership, patience and consistency. She is beautiful! Good luck with her : )

check out the BBC video "Pedigree Dogs Exposed". It shows how dogs continue to suffer due to selective breeding for looks & meeting the "standard" with no consideration for health or temperament.

Yes, Buddy2 had a thicker coat and heavier mane than your dog (before the sebaceous adenitis set in) but otherwise, same face, same body shape. Looks like chow chow to me

Whatever you chose, I hope JD is recovering well. My Buddy2 had a partial tear 2 years ago. We chose conservative management under the care of a homeopathic vet with lots of supplements and so far, I am glad we did. He zooms around like nothing happened. I know he will deal with some arthritis later...

She is adorable. That breed mix sounds like a handful! Since this is your first dog and the fact that chow chows are stubborn and independent and huskies and border collies need a purpose, you'll need a training style/plan that you and everyone in your home will get on board with. Good luck and have...
