Re: You know it's summer when...

Oh the story of a chow owner's life. You guys are lucky you don't have a black chow. My Shadow leaves a chow-shaped black fur imprint on my carpet where ever she happens to lay down. And this is after a 2 hour brushing by me and a trip to the groomers.

I trained my Shadow to use a litter box. Now I made her a huge litter box made from a sterlite container.

Re: Excremental extortion

I don't know if this will work for your case. My Shadow was very well trained in paper/potty pads as a pup even before I got her from the breeder but as soon as winter hits and snow came, she won't poop outside at all. She is now 15 months old and reliably trained to poop on a litter box. I made a h...

Re: Chow Chow compatibility

It doesn't matter what the dog breed is at the end of the day compatibility depends on the specific dog(s). You have to check whether your current dog is dominant/submissive, or heck even just tolerant of the potential adoptee. Dogs of the same breed or size does not assure compatibility and vice ve...

Re: STAIRS + my gorgeous little Hugo

My Shadow had that problem too. It's not so much for me since I live in a 4-flat condo and I usually leaves her in the kitchen/dining room level. No need for baby gates and boundaries, I thought. Well I was wrong. After a few weeks, she learned how to not just climb up stairs but also race down afte...

Re: Can I get a chow?

It's totally possible to get a chow or any other dog in that matter while at school. I am no longer in college but my sched is way worse than when I was in the university. I am a nurse and that means I have to work a few 12h shifts in a week. On top of that, I work night shift. There are other peopl...

Re: Close call

My Chow Shadow escaped so many times from her collar that I decided to use a gentle leader harness on her. It's very secure. Shadow haven't learned how to wiggle her way out of it yet... so far! The problem with collars and chows is that chows have fluffy neck fur with very loose neck skin. Their he...

I live in Chicago and we have a dog park on our side of Lake Michigan as well. I know I'm up for at least a blow dry session whenever we go there. My Shadow just love soaking in the water. ANNYY body of water and it includes muddy puddles. LOL

Re: Chows, hairiest dogs on earth

Chows do have a lot of hair. I was debating whether I should have my 7 month old's fur spun. Right now I'm saving it and since I got her, I've accumulated half a garbage bag full. This does not include the ones that the groomer had brushed off during professional grooming sessions. About the world's...

Re: Chow Chows fallen in popularity

I agree. Look how bad some shih tzu and bulldogs are bred, not to mention those obnoxious little chihuahuas. The more popular the breed is, the more is the demand. Therefore a lot more BYB and Puppy Mills will be breeding such breeds and people WILL buy them anyways. This does not help the breed at ...

Re: Bad luck???

Actually the Ancient Chinese believe that the black-blue tongue of the Chow are considered GOOD LUCK. It was (is?) believed that the black tongue wards off evil spirits. This reinforces the role of the Chow as a guardian not only for the royal courte but as well as to the common people. There is evi...

I was thinking of naming my Shadow Daenerys but then I ended up getting a black chow (I don't think its fitting anymore). Anyways, I use Solid Gold Wolfcub. It is Solid Gold's large breed puppy food. Never had problems with dry skin.

Re: cutting nails

@Sarahloo Its called a dew claw. All dogs has it but a lot of breeders pull it out when the pup is only few days old because that s what gets snagged when the dog jumps on something. Its not fair for dogs and can be easily managed by trimming. Imagine your pinky toenails pulled out when your a baby?...

Re: Some people... I swear...

She might have an ulterior motive. I've heard this happened in some shelters and on the streets. People come up and claims a dog, if the dog is chipped, they'll just say "oh sorry my mistake". But if there is no claimant and no way to identify the real owners, the mofo's just take them pre...

Re: Blue Merle Chow Chow

Actually blue merle or merle colorings is not that uncommon in most breeds and species of canines. It is in actuality a heterozygous DOMINANT gene, however it is an incomplete dominant gene . Because of this fact many merles have a more pronounced manifestations of defects and disorders mainly the d...

I myself are on the fence about spaying my Shadow. My vet suggested to spay her around 6 months of age. I was a little bit hesitant about this since she will still have at least a year to grow and hormones play a lot of roles in becoming an adult. Imagine taking out a girls ovaries even before she g...

Chicago Chow Chow meetup!

Anyone interested on having a meet up for our blue-tongued furballs? I have not seen another Chow in Chicago but from what I've seen in this and other forums, there seems to be an abundance of chowlings lounging around IL. I really wanna have my Shadow meet other chowlings and Chows seem to be hidin...

We are just getting the average amount of snow for winter (weather is so weird in Chicago). Anyways, Shadow will not poop on snow at all!! Also she will roll around the snow, so everyday I have to blow dry her and brush her for hours. Still, she gets curly under her chin, and on the hind (2 places s...
