Re: We reserved a baby! (pictures included)
Here's a 10 month old, most probably from the same breeder. All the chows in Quebec are from La Bande Kiwi. I've only met one personally, and it was a male, very nice temperament. Anyways this nice 10 month old is being sold on kijiji in Montreal for $600 (owner doesn't have time, blah blah blah you...

Re: Playing too rough / hurting little dogs
Yeah, he sounds dominant. Many dogs aren't good candidates for dog parks. Doesn't mean they're bad, they just don't always play well with others. I can't take mine to a dog park because he hates males and has been in one too many fights for me to feel okay about taking him back there ever. He gets a...

Re: Reaching out for advice - Goodbye Mochi
Oh my god what a heartbreaking post. I am so sorry. This is a reminder to everyone to do your own training. Join an obedience and take some classes with your dog, and don't hand over your dog to a trainer. No one knows your dog better than you. I think i saw videos on Mochi on Youtube. What an amazi...

Re: Heavenly chows breeder?
I just looked at their site.... they are not involved in any type of activities with their dogs. They don't do conformation, they don't do agility, obedience, nothing. They don't list any health certifications for their female breeding dogs , most good breeders will have OFA numbers and ratings on t...

Re: What kind of Dog food do you use? / skin problems
Unfortunately Royal Canin is garbage and Purina and Hills are definitely not better. There are many high quality, grain-free dog foods available. I give my dogs a grain-free food called Orijen. You can read about their food here: http://www.orijen.ca/ You will see your dog's coat and itching improve...

Re: My Little Lilly
I was hoping that Lilly's & my adventures would be butterflies & birdies, but our adventures are turning into challenges; the hard knocks of learning for all of us. It's tempting to romanticize rescuing a second-hand dog, giving it a better life... But they're dogs, not angels. And most sec...

Sometimes I wonder if rescues are more grateful then the average dog bought as a pup.and that comes through in their incredible loyalty. I'm sorry for the loss of your amazing friend.

Tundra is a year and a half now. He is amazing and a great, sweet dog. I noticed that you posted on another site that he is blind in one eye: "I have a male blue Merle chow chow Tundra that is the same exact colors and is blind in one eye too." In the comments on this video: http://www.y...

Re: Blue Merle Chow Chow
Usually when a breeder deliberately produces a litter of pups with 'rare colors' they're only in it for the money. And make money they do on customers who pay as much as double for a mixed breed dog who they have been told is 'rare'. Reputable breeders will only breed the colors set out in the breed...

Re: Canadian breeder advice
I've met 2 chows from mi pao and they have both had nice personalities. They were both brought to puppy kindergarten and obedience class so that surely helped form their nice personalities. They weren't friendly like a lab but very peaceful. And stubborn lol.

Re: Thinking about getting a chow chow pup....
Buy from a reputable breeder who has been breeding for years for temperament. Someone who has a male and a female chow who breeds them out of their backyard doesn't qualify as a reputable breeder. Try to find someone who has been in the breed for at least 5 years, someone who shows their chows at co...

Re: My Little Lilly
Lilly sounds adorable, a tad spoiled and a little bossy, and yes you can thank her previous owners for the bossy part! I would try the Nothing in Life is Free Method. I think you both will really like it because it is reward based and very gentle. You can read about it here, it's simple and it feels...

Re: Northeast/NY/NJ/CT Breeders ?
A friend of mine has 2 chows from Mi Pao (Ontario Canada). They are both healthy chows and have nice personalities. She even brings them off leash to dog parks! They are the heavily built show type. The breeder has a good reputation and has been breeding chows for decades. Might be a little too far ...

Re: Bordetella
I never had the vaccination done because my dogs are not ever boarded. Both my dogs caught bordetella at a dog park. It's basically a dog cold and they fought it off themselves. Even the 13 year old pug fought it off without medications. But if you have a dog who is in poor health (who may not be ab...

You could have frozen semen flown in from a male in another location who has health screenings (eyes and hips). Many reputable breeders do that.

Will your stud have health screenings for hip displaysia going back several generations? I would imagine that would even be harder to find.

Re: First time chow/dog owner...
You also might want to take Sparkle to puppy school and then basic obedience classes after that. Make sure that the obedience class you chose trains with "motivational methods" which means there is no harsh punishment but when the dog does something good, she gets praise and a treat. My do...

Re: First time chow/dog owner...
after a few minutes she still goes after our slippers, from there I put her in her crate for a good time out, around 20mins, then let her out again and same events happened the whole day... You're on the right track. This is a puppy stage where they nibble everything. It won't last forever and you ...
