Kidney Disease
My three year old dog has kidney disease and he is not allowed to have a lot of protein in his diet. I feed him the kidney disease food, and sometimes switch it up with a rice/beef/bread meal. Do you guys have any experience with your doggies having kidney disease? Also I would love to get some reci...

Re: Kidney disease
What's the protein percentage in the food you give him? I just ordered 12 percent. Is that low enough?

Kidney disease
My dog has been acting weird lately, so I decided to take him to the vet. Turns out he has kidney disease, and the doctor said that eventually it'll catch up to him and it'll be really difficult for him at the end. She also said that this is hereditary for chows... I guess he should not be eating ea...

Re: My dog is being aggressive.
I'm definitely going to call that trainer tomorrow and have a talk with her. After we left, my dog has been growling at me, my husband, and even the cats. Today he even growled at me and the cats for being around his food. That is something that he has never done. Not even when he was a puppy. Plus ...

My dog is being aggressive.
So today I took my 2 year old chow to his first dog training class. Everything was perfectly fine up until the trainer tried showing people what to do when a dog won't stop barking, and she used my dog to demonstrate... He completely freaked out. All the bad behaviors that I haven't seen from him si...

I need advise ASAP
I have a chow/golden retriever that is only a little over a year old. Generally he's well behaved, loves people, a great guard dog and is not afraid of anything. Today, he started acting completely strange. He refuses to go into my mom's house, and I literally had to lift him up and carry him in aft...

Re: Shedding?
Christina hits on a very good point that it could be a normal molt. Chows will generally blow their coats 2x a year. If Thor is a puppy (and with a Chow coat at issue, consider that to be under 2 years of age). That being said, a Chow without his proper coat is very susceptible to cold weather. The...

Shedding?
Okay so, my dog Thor lost all of his undercoat (the lighter, fluffier fur). His top coat is still there, and it seems to be fine. He just looks tiny without his hair, and his beautiful tail is just not the same anymore. He has also been very itchy. The vet said that he has yeast on his skin, and he ...

Is your chow afraid of water?
My half chow, half retriever Thor absolutely HATES water. He loves to watch it, but hates going into fountains, pools, puddles and even bath time is our worst nightmare, no matter how many toys he has in there. We were having a 'dog swim day' at the pool, and when we finally got him into the water, ...

Re: Our Chow Chow will not go for walks with me
I do think this is a bonding issue. My dog Thor used to go on walks with my fiance just fine. Now he refuses to go out with him, even when he has to go potty. He just sits there and it's impossible to move him. Put as soon as I take the leash, he's up and ready to go. I have also noticed that he gua...

And start a conversation about if she can't take care of it would you be able to take him? How is she with her other animals?? Just to clarify, she's my ...

Chow Abuse
Okay, so this all started when i found out that a friend of mine was giving out half retriever half chow puppies. I made the mistake of telling my (future) sister in law about it, and of course she showed interest. I assumed that she was good at taking care of animals since she already has a dog and...

Re: why do people think chows are one of the most dangerous
I was always scared that my chow would turn out mean. When i first got him he was absolutely crazy, and what made everything worse is that he is really smart. he would manage to open up his cage, box, jump over baby gates, open up doors and destroy every little thing in the house. He'd bite constant...

I took him to the vet and they told me he was just allergic to pollen and fertilizer. They gave him a steroid shot and they hope it doesn't come back!

Staph infection or allergies??
So my puppy has been itching and biting on his belly. I looked at it and it was all red. It's not infected or anything but i can definitely see that it bothers him. I don't really want to take him to the vet simply because they've been over charging us and screwing us over quite a bit (making mistak...

Should I shave my chow?
For the past couple of days the weather has been around 50-60 degrees, and after not even 5 minute walks Thor gets overheated. He gets all out of breath and just wants to go home. When he gets home, he wont stop drinking. He gets plenty of water, and the bowl is always full, so he shouldn't be dehyd...

First, I want to say that you puppy is ADORABLE!! My puppy, Thor, is around six months, we got him when he was 4 weeks old. I love him to death, but gosh he was a mean puppy for MONTHS when we first brought him home. I went through a lot of stress because of him. He's also my first dog and i had abs...

Re: Are chows really as bad as people make them seem?
Hey guys! Just an update! I was going to take him to a trainer, but the only trainer in town said that she is not having any classes right now because she does not have time for them at the moment. My family continued to try and talk me into giving him away, but i kept on refusing. I made sure to ta...

I'm so glad i didnt give him away
This guy is about six months now. He is my first dog, and i am crazy in love. His name is Thor. He is a half chow, half retriever. I got him from a family when he was only 4 weeks old, and they were giving all the puppies away because they could not support them (when i went to pick him up, they wer...

Are chows really as bad as people make them seem?
I recently got a chow-lab mix, but he mostly looks like a normal chow and acts like one too. He is now about 12 weeks old. He is having a nipping problem, but we're still working on it. He's a very smart dog and already knows how to sit, and shake both paws, and knows what 'nice' means. He is also p...
