Re: Cream Chows and pigmentation...

I have a cream chow who is 6 years old. She's always had the black tongue and a pinkish nose. Lately we've noticed her tongue's color is changing to a lighter color. It was my curiosity about this phenomenon that brought me to this thread.
Just putting that out there.

Re: New chow has aggression issues

Yes, I was visiting a rescue group located on a farm in Illinois, walking and checking out a chow they had, when a little girl about 6-7 years ran up, exclaiming what a beautiful dog, and threw her arms around its neck! Fortunately, this was a VERY calm chow and nothing happened. Her mother didn't a...

Re: New chow has aggression issues

Yes, I thought it would be hard for most dogs to learn in that environment and that home practice wold work best. I always address her when she growls or barks and expect that it won't really improve until she starts to lose her fear and builds trust in me. She already knows Sit and was picking up S...

Re: New chow has aggression issues

Thank you, U.D. My dog experience consists of volunteer dog walking for the humane society and then adopting a stray chow from them 9 years ago. She was a total sweetheart but our time together ended in May when old age became too much for her. Also watched a couple seasons worth of Dog Whisperer, d...

Re: New chow has aggression issues

Well...I had to give up on the idea of having my sister take care of Sophie and the cats while I'm gone in December. So I thought it would be a good idea to take her to obedience classes at a place that also boards dogs, with the thought that she would get some training, some socialization, and woul...

Re: New chow has aggression issues

We live in a semi rural area on a dead-end street, so we don't get many passers-by. I've been bringing her to parks and forest preserves and we don't get too close to anyone - the closest is other people walking by on the bike paths and I sometimes step off a few feet - and she's been a sweetheart. ...

Re: New chow has aggression issues

Yes, Pinoy. Actually she barked and showed teeth at a second man, an attorney I know, and I got a glare and a scornful "Nice dog!" from him. I do not want her to be perceived as dangerous and definitely don't want her to actually BE dangerous. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I had read...

Re: different types of chows

All of them are beautiful. Here is an online article I found while researching this topic, regarding how the chow standard has evolved. http://andruska.wordpress.com/tag/chow-viii/

New chow has aggression issues

I am hoping to get some suggestions as to how to handle my newly adopted chow, Sophie. She is 3 years old and I got her from a shelter, where she had been for 5 months. Not much is known of her life prior to that, except that she was routinely neglected. My concern is how she acts with strangers. Sh...
