Severe Bilateral Hip Dysplasia *pictures*
So I may have mentioned this in the past, but my chow chow has congenital severe bilateral hip dysplasia. In other words, he was born with the issue from the get go. At one year of age, he received an xray to confirm this back in 2013. Prior to this we noticed that he was reluctant to move up stairs...

A question about RAW with DRY
So, Louie is... extremely picky. We have been through nearly 5 different dog food brands (dry) and he seems to follow the same irritating pattern of liking to eat it no problem for approximately 3-4 weeks, wherein he decides cold turkey that he doesn't want to eat it anymore. One time he refused to ...

Re: Smoothy with No Name
He's beautiful! Such a handsome, squishy face! And that shorter coat must be helpful against the sand.
We live on the coast as well (about 20 minutes from the beach), but I don't think we'd dare take Louie. I can't imagine the nightmare experienced trying to clean sand and salt from his fur.

You're welcome! Milk-Bones are another product of controversy, as their ingredients are often foreign and questionable and laden with chemicals. Certainly a product I wouldn't feed my dog. Here's an older article thoroughly explaining large company products you may be familiar with: http://goodnessg...

Re: Teeth Care
Just brush, brush, brush! Once a day, maybe twice if you are overly concerned. We brush our dog's teeth at night time every day and he is nearing his 2nd birthday in June. His teeth are still pearly white! But we do notice if we skip a day or two, or three, that his breath will begin to smell. We al...

Re: Chow size...
Wow, he's huge! I think that is the biggest chow I have ever seen!
Just more fur to love I say! I'd hug him all day, every day.
Though I'd keep tabs on his joints, specifically his hips and elbows, with size like that. =)
Our Louie is 62lbs.

Did you not understand what a Lion cut is? You should have asked and It should have been made clear to you. Nevertheless, what's happened has happened the fur will grow back , in the meantime a t shirt or doggy coat will help keep the sun off and your chowbaby warm. From what you've put the groomer...

Re: I need advise ASAP
Your dog seems more Chow than retriever attitude wise. It could be one or all of these things: 1. The teen rebellious age, battle of wills. My sweet tempered Chow girl has just turned one last March 17. Something changed at around 11 months onwards. She started rebelling in little ways. Refuses to ...

Re: I need advise ASAP
How often does he go to your mom's house? and when was the last time he was there? He is still growing, mentally and physically, and so occasionally there can be some lag between socialization, especially if there was some lag between one time he was at your mothers and this time. Assuming he has no...

Re: Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?
A small update. Louie is doing much better on the Zeel that was recommended by this forum. He has been on it since... December? Acts like a puppy again. Yay! And I've figured out why he bites his tail. Perhaps, an indirect way to deal with the pain from his hips? But no more whimpering. We've also c...

Re: Has anyone purchased a chow chow from D&M Farm?
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT purchase a chow from D&M Farm. I have purchased a chow from D&M Farm and I have had nothing but issues (parents were Lila and Teddy). More specifically, our chow has had nothing but issues. He is nearing his 2 year birthday and when he was 1 year, was diagnosed with...

Re: best food for your chow
I also feed Acana - the Pacifica blend - as well as the 95% turkey/salmon Wellness cans. Overall, chows require low protein level and you typically want to stay away from beef and chicken as a primary protein source. I've never heard of GO! Natural, but I just took a look at their food and it looks ...

Re: Our Chow bit my wife
That's wonderful to hear! I have done similar training with my chow with no issues (ie: not allowed on couch or bed, no toys unless its playtime, sit/down commands, etc)
It's great to hear you are being proactive about it. Good luck and keep us informed.

Re: Our Chow bit my wife
In what way exactly did she bite her? Was there any warning, like growling or body tenseness, that would indicate a bite? And in what position was Kristi in when this occurred? Training goes a long way with chows. They tend to be poor sighted too, which could have provoked the bite if she were in a ...

I recommend a vet visit. My poor BooBoo has a hacking cough and was diagnosed with a fungal infection which eventually resulted in a bacterial infection in his lungs & pneumonia. The NC State University Vet Med School says they've only heard of one other dog getting the particular fungus he has...

Thank you Laura! I'll def look into it. If you don't mind me asking, what brand and/or dosage do you use on your Lucy? I'll have to ask the vet about it. Re: Hacking/gagging type cough. Occasional regurg/vomit? Adv
After Louie takes a drink does his water look slimey or foamy? If you put your finger in the back of his throat does it come out with a white foam on it? The area I live in is bad for allergies and this is what we see in the dogs. Very common for them to vomit bile during this time. Sometimes they ...

Re: Hacking/gagging type cough. Occasional regurg/vomit? Adv
Poor Louie! I have no idea on the hacking thing. Shug will do it occasionally after drinking water but never to the point of throwing up. As far as the front limp I can only think that with hip dysplasia they tend to compensate for the bad back end by distributing more weight on the front and using...

The coughing/gagging comes in short 1-3 bursts, and sounds exactly like this:
