Re: A wonderful souvenir of my Buster

If you are interested in doing this, you can email me at woof at knityourdog dot com. As to how many "bags" of hair it takes, that depends on the size of the "bag" and the size of the sweater. If you contact me, I can arrange to find out how much of your dog's hair would be neede...

Re: Grain Free Kibble?

My current Chow, Shadow, does fine with grain, but Buster (see my avatar) did much better on grain-free. We have never rotated proteins; I wish I could give you more feedback on that. A nutritionist whom I respect recommends it but I don't like to mess with what works (because I hate cleaning up loo...

And here is what the finished sweater looks like (along with a scarf I knitted for a friend). It's so soft and warm it's unbelievable.

Re: Does anyones Chow do this??

Buster used to treasure sewn-together rawhide "toys" as if they were babies. He would carry them everywhere, and cried like a baby when I wouldn't let him take them along on walks. Shadow doesn't do that, but he also plays with toys, which Buster never did. Shadow shares all his toys with ...

Re: Rory has ruptured ACL

Rest is key, no matter which route you choose. And be warned: once one cruciate ligament goes, the other one will usually go later due to the increased load from compensating for the damaged ligament.

Re: Help, my chow chows hair wont grow back!

If you can have the vet check thyroid levels and cardiac health, that is important as well. A dog with coronary disease will not grow hair, and thyroid levels affect it as well.

Re: Supplements

I have never heard of Squalene. I've had excellent results with salmon oil and my veterinary chiropractor has spoken very highly of krill oil for dogs that do not tolerate the taste of the salmon oil. As for vitamin E, if you have any type of inflammation, it's helpful, especially in combination wit...

Re: Hip dysplasia, torn ACL, oh my

Hi Laura and anyone reading this thread, Buster had dysplasia in his left hip only. That wore on the right leg so that his cranial cruciate ligament snapped when he was 9. I had that repaired and he healed fully in 6 weeks. Be prepared, though, the other one will also likely rupture in time. For Bus...

Be sure to check his heart as well. Heart disease will stop hair growth.

Re: Paw chewing. Help.

Shadow has been licking his paws non-stop for the last several weeks. Neither the vet nor I can find any cause; we know it's airborne allergens and this is how it's manifesting. His paws are going bald, but still no redness, no sores. This has been a dreadful allergy season, for me and for all my do...

Re: A wonderful souvenir of my Buster

If anyone is interested in having their Chow's hair spun into wool (and then knitted or whatever, that's possible too) the spinner I used enjoyed spinning Chow so much that she said I could share her info with other Chow owners. So if you are interested, let me know.

Re: Look what I made

For anyone who wants their Chow hair spun into fantastic wool, I do have a spinner. She did Buster's hair for me and it is exquisite. She is also a very skilled knitter, and I know an award-winning weaver. Post here, and I'll put you in touch if you're interested. I'll also post a pic of my Buster t...

Re: Spinning Wheel - keep on spinning

In case anyone does want to spin their Chow's hair, I can recommend an experienced spinner who has indeed spun 2800 yards of Buster's brushed hair into BEAUTIFUL 2-ply wool that knits beautifully, actually feels like cashmere. She enjoyed spinning the Chow hair so much, she will be happy to spin for...

Re: More Fur please!!!

If the hair is taking a very long time to grow back, you might want to have your Chow's heart checked. Heart disease can impact hair growth. The thyroid is another culprit to check. But only if there is little to no growth over time. If the undercoat is coming back in, the mechanism would seem to be...

Re: Should I shave my chow?

Chows are originally from Mongolia (came to the West via China, but archaeological evidence has them in Mongolia much earlier). Climate there is far more extreme than in most of North America and certainly more so than in Europe. The coat insulates against heat AND cold, and Chows are indeed more su...

A wonderful souvenir of my Buster

wool.jpg Like most of you, I brush diligently. With Buster, who lived to the age of 15 years and 3 months, that was a lot of brushing, and I saved it, too. Here is a sample of what a spinner has made from what remains of my beloved boy. When all is done, we should have over 4000 yards of it and Bus...
