Re: Extreme shedding...Is this normal?!

Thank you! No, definitely not bald patches, they just looked so thin compared to his old coat which worried me a little. Starting to look a little more normal now they're evening out. Barney gets a bit excited when we brush him and keeps going for the brush, so have to wait until he's tired and then...

Extreme shedding...Is this normal?!

Hi chow owners! I'm hoping those with a little more experience of owning a fuzzy bear can help me out. I'm new to having a chow...or indeed having a dog full stop! I had Barney in June last year at 13 weeks. In the last couple of weeks his fur is coming out like crazy, I mean in literal clumps! I kn...

Re: stinky chin

Barney always had soggy fur under his chin; when he had his eye operation, the vet trimmed it all so when he wore his colar, it wouldn't be such a good breeding ground for bacteria and infection...best thing that could have happened! I keep it trimmed now, not too short, but just enough so he's not ...

Re: Does your Chow grunt and snort?

So pleased to hear this is normal!! I was just reading another post about wagging tails; my Barney doesn't wag his tail much, he's very selective and it's usually when someone makes a lot of fuss of him. I was worried incase this means he's not very happy, but his tail is always up (i heard if the t...

Re: what is your chow chow's weight?

Wow, so many variations in weight. I was concerned my 7 month Barney was growing so fast, he weighs about 61lbs at just over 7 months! Was growing about a KG every couple of weeks! Getting very difficult to manouvre, but vet says he's healthy and I'll keep up the rib check. Just had him done so even...

Re: Curious habits. Does your chow do this?

Ours show no interst in coving poo or in having it cleaned up lol. They dissapear off into the longest wildest grass and undergrowth to relieve themselves on a walk but dont mind going in the middle of a newly cut lawn in the garden. They never kick to cover it but I notice they are very very caref...

Re: Nala arrived at her new home

Thanks Guy's actually yesterday things already settled. And Simba is starting to care for Nala. This morning when she woke up and started yelping, he walked over to her, layed down and put his big paw over hers then started licking her ear. Sooo... cute, wish I would have had a video ready. After s...

Re: To neuter or not?

FozzBear: That's great news! Poor little thing has been in the wars hasn't she, but lovely to hear she's on the mend now and much more happy. Fingers crossed she stays healthy and happy :) Does she have any scars under her eyes? MartMan86: Thank you! That's just what i wanted to hear, that he still ...

Re: To neuter or not?

Thanks guys, this is all really great advice! He definitely won't be bred, because of his eye condition. The vet I'm using has done a number of entropion surgeries on chows and SharPei's (who he thinks are much more difficult) so I have every confidence in him. It's interesting to hear that your cho...

To neuter or not?

Hi all, I'm a new user, new to owning a chow (or dog of any breed!) looking for some advice or thoughts on neutering. Barney (males red chow) is 6 months next week and the vet has recommended I have him neutered (at the same time they perform his entropion operation). I'm trying to find out a little...

Re: Chow diagnosed with Entropion

I had my Chow puppy Barney at 13 weeks and the breeder told me he had a slight entropion. She said it could go one of two ways, self correct or need surgery. It got progressively worse as the weeks went by and my first vet did a tacking procedure (sticthes to pull the eyelid out) at around 4 1/2 mon...
