We have a nine year old senior who developed “black skin” disease over the last year. It started with small patches on his belly. Now his front looks exactly like Bear’s. Simba lost his tail fur and some fur on his but, plus his entire belly is bare too. It’s purely cosmetic, we have tried a couple ...

Re: Males fighting

@Rory's dad Thanks I think your approach can work. Kion just is recovering from his castration. Everything went fine and this Sunday I will have him joining the others again. Last night I had an incident as he sneaked out of the door behind me and ended up in front of Joey. Just before I was able to...

Males fighting

Hi everyone, have been away for a long time. We have now five Chows we added Kion to Simba,Nala, Sally and Joey. Kion is now about eight months old, he had developed a rather bad skin infection involving his testicles. Now he is in full adolescence. Marking everywhere and challenging Joey, my alpha,...

Re: How to brush teeth of Chows

I haven't heard of a Chow who likes toothbrush  . Will be interesting to see if someone managed to do that. I gave up and give half a denta stick in the evening to everyone. Of course there are people who don't recommend doing this. I guess one ingredient isn't healthy I have to check it again....

Re: Recommend shampoos to use for my chow?

I'm using for years now "head and shoulders" without any problems. Any other shampoo for sensitive skin wll do (anti dandruff). I don't use conditioner but give fish oil daily. I do grooming myself. Works well for me, no skin issues even with my rescue who has a very bad case of mange. Fur...

Re: Adopted Chow mix

I'm using Cod liver oil, one capsule a day oral. For old dogs vitamine C is very helpful. My two oldies are getting 500 mg daily as well as Sally due to her mange. I' m using "head and shoulders" shampoo once a week to shower them. So far everyone is doing fine, Simba is the oldest Chow he...

Re: Adopted Chow mix

I'm glad I can be off help to you and Bear. You observed correctly that Chows have a more sophisticated way to communicate than most dogs. Therefore there ability to communicate with other breeds is therefore a bit complicated and prune to error. One of my mixed breeds is not getting the Chow "...

Re: Adopted Chow mix

Hi Tracy, Growling and the sharp snapping action you need address. Give a stop command and tell "bad dog" or whatever you do to address unwanted behavior. The humping you need to watch as it is a dominance behavior. Joey is doing it with Simba, but Simba is tolerating it and he is the olde...

Re: Joey growing up

Yeah, we're a small zoo :D There are two indoor cats and the stray tom cat ( the friend of Teddy our free spirit) as well. I haven't posted about Teddy as he is mixed, but maybe I will post a picture of him and his cat friend one day. just for fun. It is not as much work as it sounds. The six dogs a...

Re: Adopted Chow mix

This play biting is common at least among my Chows. You can see a picture of Joey 5 month and Simba 4years playing like that. Nala my girl shows affection by taking my arm in her fang. If the movspements are slow, no snapping withv abrupt turning of the head and If there is no growling but tail wagg...

Re: Joey growing up

not sure if I understand the question correct, but our pack has seven members.
Four Chows and three mixed breeds. Actuall six plus one would be more correct, as one of the mixed guys likes to live independent. He befriended a tom cat and stays in another area of the house than anybody else.

Re: Joey growing up

Joey is getting 5month soon. Became watchful but didn't loose his affection for water. I haven't seen him dru for more than five minutes. The breeder was right he is very headstrong. Every now and then we have an argument about the house rules. Simba isn't helping much either anymore, he let him be ...

Re: 3 year old Chow bit my mom.

It looks you adopted Chow is now the selfdeclared leader of your pack. Three weeks is good enough to adapt to his new environment. The growling was the warning not to move away, when she ignored it he tried to hold her back. I assume no-one thought about discipline in the last three weeks. hugging a...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

Hi, neck collar works for most dogs, even for Chows if they have the basic follower instict. I had Simba on neck collar until he got too heavy and I got worried that if he starts chasing and I have to hold him, I might hurt him. If they want to follow they will relatively fast learn to avoid the cho...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

Wow, pinch collar for a Chow. What a genius of trainer has suggested that. Most Chows are reacting quite badly if you inflicted pain. I can't imagine to use pain to direct my guys. Someone down in the thread suggested excatly the right thing, stop and communicate with the dog. My rescue Sally was te...

Re: Chow allergic to flea medications?

I'm using Advocate from Bayer, since years. No problem at all. I started using it last month for Sally, she has a bad case of mange, also for her no problem. Oppsosite her red skin and fur loss is improving again. I have no experience with trifex, I use frontline for my rescue dogs without issues as...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

Depends on age, Joey our youngster is 4.5month, he is playing his whole wake time. Simba is 4 years has adopted Joey and therefore is playing several hours now. The two girls are taking over if Simba gets tired or anoyed. Most important for every Chow is being part of the pack. Where the pack leader...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

My Chows and I are also living in the Philippines too. I'm known in this forum for being straight out about providing leadership for you dogs, exercise and then affection. Chows are high maintenance dogs in many aspects and you just can't provide to Walter what he needs. You're not providing for you...

Re: Chester aggression issues in South America

Hi Enrique, I'm sorry to hear about your problems with Chester. I have one point to make, dogs and specially Chows are not attacking out of nowhere. There is always a trigger and there are early signs of aggression before the actual biting starts. It is very important in my view that the work with C...

He is a cute guy everyone likes him and so far he is very social. No growling at strangers and he likes to be touched.
Might change still when he becomes a teenager but it's a good start.

Playtime with the big guy
Simba is the perfect big brother, gentle but firm if it comes to pack discipline. This is ther favorite play.
