Torn Cruciate Ligament

Hi all, My five year old chow (maybe mix, he was a stray so can't be sure) has ruptured his cruciate ligament. I am trying to figure out the best course of action, and thought I'd reach out to see what others had been through. Did some searching on the forum but didn't see much that people had gone ...

Re: Taking chow camping?

I feel better after reading this. They won't be doing much hiking, they'll primarily just be hanging out around the campsite. I am trying to have faith that everything will be just fine. My ex is very responsible and knows what to do if he gets over heated. He said he'll probably dunk him in the str...

Taking chow camping?

Hello, My joint-custody chow is going on a weekend camping trip with my ex. The forecasted temperature is mid-80s all weekend. How concerned about heat stroke should I be? They will be camping in a heavily wooded area so there should be lots of shade, and obviously there will be plenty of water to k...

Itchy, balding chow chow

Hello, For the past few months I've been battling skin troubles with J.D. When the weather turned colder his skin started getting flaky/dandruff like and he seemed to be itchy. The vet recommended fish oil pills and we've been giving him those for probably two months now. The itching has only gotten...

Re: De *Censored Word* or not

It is definitely best if you know you do not have intentions of breeding him. Neutering will cut down on his desire to roam around looking for females and can tone down some territorial traits. It will not affect his growth. Definitely get him snipped!

Re: *Censored Word* glands?

J.D. had problems with this when he was a pup. The last time this happened was maybe six months ago when they were clipping his nails at the vet which he HATES and I think he did it mostly to get back at the people daring to touch his feet haha. When he was a pup though if he got startled he release...

Thought I'd put some updated pictures in here, I've been MIA for a little while now. J.D. and I participated in a photo shoot for an ad campaign for an adoption event I was helping with that just occured this past weekend. We were kind of covering the side of things that even purebred animals can en...

Re: Help! Our beloved Chow Chow died after simple eye surger

I am so sorry for your loss but I am thankful that I am now aware of these potential issues with them being put under. Now I'll know to say something for any future procedures. I cannot imagine the shock you are feeling right now, only three years old.

Re: Everyone should read before buying a pet...

I've read this before and it's gut wrenching to me. While I don't completely dismiss the idea of breeding because as was mentioned you would lose certain breeds of dogs. But when it seems like much of the breeding world is so irresponsible, I definitely stand by the don't breed or buy while shelter ...

Tippsy's mom that is too funny!! I was at a yard sale and bought J.D. two different costume options to see what he'd agree with...a pirate hat and a pumpkin. He hated the hat so the pumpkin won! I think I bought the same pirate hat Jasper is wearing! http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1859/imag1392m.j...

Re: ROSCOE - A year in the making

He is beautiful! Glad to hear he is acting as an ambassador for the breed. My goal with J.D. is to change each person's mind one at a time, because I know plenty of people that don't truly believe chows can be nice.

Oh Ursa looks so much like when we first got J.D. As much as I adore him now I miss just carrying him around under my arm like a football!! I have a excellent snuggle buddy and body warmer in these colder temperatures now though : )

Maybe bring a framed picture of Nikki with you? Something that he can talk to and look at and maybe try to explain that it's the only way to see Nikki now? I'm not sure, I haven't had to deal with that but it's the only thing I can think of.

How do you contact West Texas Chow Rescue? Their website does not have any contact information listed that I could find. It lists their animals up for adoption and says send an email but I see no e-mail address. Someone just linked me to a chow mom and two pups that are only available to rescue and ...

Oh this really breaks my heart. Poor sweet girl. That is much too short a time with her. These stories sadden me so deeply because I don't know what I'd do if I were to lose J.D. so soon. Of course, if he were here for the rest of my life it still wouldn't be long enough. I am so very sorry.

Re: How do you manage nail trimming?

For how wonderful J.D. is he absolutely hates getting his nails trimmed. I have no idea why, since we've had him since he was a pup I've been there for all trimmings. I have the vet do it, it takes two assistants to do it, one to hold him down and another to actually trim. It's the only time he's ev...

Re: Altered

I think the health concerns by NOT spaying are more significant than the reasons to delay doing it. If you spay before their first heat you are greatly reducing their risk of ever developing uterine or breast cancer. I have not heard of problems as far as shedding is concerned, my chow boy is fixed ...

If he's favoring the paw this might not be a great suggestion but if he's unsteady overall he might have an inner ear or equilibrium problem.

Re: Fast Eater, is that normal?

My chow gobbled his food a lot when we first got him, and we found out it was because he had tapeworm. Might be worth checking out. Before we realized this I had bought him a Kong wobbler for feeding time. It's a fun activity for them and gives them no choice but to eat slowly. http://www.kongcompan...
