Re: Maturity age?
wow! its been forever since i've been on the forums :> I read your post and I do sympathise with you~ You must remember, your chowlie is VERY young - and settling down will come with time. I urge you to not let her get away with biting or hurting you. Give her time outs in her crate if she is naught...

Re: new pup and older dog + misc. info
its so overwhelming trying to train a chow. I know how you must be feeling. I think you need to also remember that you dont own a GSD or a doberman or a collie. You own a chow. There are times when you will give an instruction, and believe me, chowlie has heard, but chowlie just refuses to follow. T...

Re: Vicious Fighting
ooh!!! i wish I could give you advice!!!! I dont actually have any! so bizzare that now at 20 months the fighting has begun. I would recommend getting a dog therapist in to assess both dogs - something is def amiss in their pack-order. Good luck to you friend and I'm seriously holding thumbs for you!

@Cam - its amazing how the world is so different! Us 3rd world people tend to be a bit more relaxed with pets etc (I was born in Brazil and the same applies there) - maybe because everyone is used to them being used as a security measure...henceforth, people dont touch other peoples pets. I have jus...

Re: The price of a dog bite
hi Victory :> I assume this post was put up in response to my comment on the "wow" thread. You're absolutely right about one thing, an outsider will have a difficult time "getting" what you all go through because, well, its all so very foreign to us! You listed a GSD as liability...

Re: LOL@Rio 'talking' to me
hehehehhehe this is a cute thread. I must say though, that I have more conversations with my cat than I do with my dog. In fact, i can have a full on conversation with my cat. One lasted for over 4 mins the other day. We just went on and on :) kinda like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3U0udLH...

Re: Wow...
its so amazing how the world is a totally different place over the sea! you would NEVER get a person forcing themselves onto a pet over here. Most South African's keep well away from everyone's dogs. There is no such thing as just coming up and petting a dog out of no where. Most of the times if you...

Re: Teenage Chow Challenging Authority
Just some feedback *(because i can!!) :) Slush has started to settle down. What a bumpy ride! I stopped taking her to puppy classes and spent more time just working one on one with her. She is learning to respects my authority and does most things I ask of her now without too much trouble. She'll be...

Re: CHOW CHOW/Retriever Mix and 7 year old cat
Hi Katie! Hope i can give you some advice... I however brought a puppy into a 6 year old cat's enviroment - and its much easier with puppies - but perhaps you can draw from some of what i did, because its worked well for us! When we first picked up puppy and brought her home, we kept her in her crat...

Re: Chow Skin - Help Needed
thanks :> I took slush to the groomer and they did a stellar job with her (since its really hard for me to bath her) - and the cooked food seems to be doing some good. I've been feeding her home cooked food since the last post (so for 2 weeks now) and her skin has shown some signs of improvment alre...

Re: Lexi's incision is leaking pinkish/reddish stuff...
Please take your dog to the vet RIGHT now. There is no reason an incision from a spay should be leaking unless the internal stitches have ruptured. Please keep us informed and I'll say a little prayer for your doggie. I know what it feels like to think you've hurt your dog - but you didnt do anythin...

Re: Chows as service dogs
aaaah :) what a lovely idea! I cant see my slush puppy being a service dog tho. The only service she can provide is being an attractive floor rug :P Its no secret that dogs can pick up on different stresses in humans. Just today I took Slush to the groomers for the first time and because i was stres...

Re: Went After Another Dog...smh
hmm... i have to agree with what was said about your doggie reacting and learning from the way you are with other dogs. I have socialized my dog at length from the second we got her. She's grown up not fearing people or other dogs - and she loves them all! The only time she has ever had a problem is...

I agree with audymay 100%.
You may have known what you were doing, but the baystander didnt... and at the end of the day, we're all animal lovers so both she and you were on the same page. There arent many of us around, so it best if we all stick together. She was just looking out for your fuzz-ball.

Re: Which Collar?
I've had the best luck with a nylon collar with the "choke" bit on the side... so when she pulls on her lead, the nylon bit gets tighter and the chain never comes into contact with her neck. I've tried everything and she seems to like this the most. Sucks for me, because I like the cute on...

Re: keeping your chow cool?
i'm in South Africa where its effing hot all the time. My chowlie isnt as plushy as most, so keeping her cool isnt such a problem. If its a boiling hot day, we hose her down a little with a fine mist - and she goes and plonks herself down in front of the fan. Thats her favourite :) ps. Aircon all th...

ALLO! So slushy doesnt have mange. It was confirmed 2 weeks ago at the vet again. BUT, she does have these arb dark patches on her skin and hair growth is sparse. She is also scratching a lot more and neither the vet nor I know what is going on (he couldnt see anything on 2 skin scrapings from 2 dif...

so - it looks like my poor dogs mange is coming back. I've booked to see the vet this afternoon. Not sure if its secondary skin infections now or the mange. Whatever it is - im so bleak and I feel so bad for my dog. Over the easter weekend, i spent 2 whole hours sitting under the shower in all my cl...

Re: My mum's poodle almost died.
Hey! I watched this documentary which aimed to show the effects of an animal that is taken from its mother too young. They experimented with baby piggies (pigletts). Basically, they took one piggy away from its mother too soon (i think at 4 weeks) and another piggy that was fully weaned and taken fr...

i find that theres always a group of total douch bags at the dog park. The ones whose dogs always cause with the quite dogs, and then when the quiet dog finally shows its had enough - they have the nerve to blame you. They're in every country around the world. Believe me! Its so bad at my dog park, ...
