Re: Adoption?? Opinions please?

I too rescued my chow, Nellie and I firmly believe she chose me. Every time I walked past her cage she would scratch at the door. The volunteeer pointed this out to me and I watched as other people walked past and she just layed down. I walked past one last time deciding if I wanted a bigger dog ( I...

Re: Let us discuss food

I feed Canidae All Life Stages to both of my dogs. Nellie has been inhaling it for almost 2 yrs. I choose it because it is a good value (a 44lb bag is around $50, there is no corn or wheat at all in this food). Nellie also has a full shiny coat and there is very little to clean up. I tried Nutro Max...

Re: Nellie has a new companion

Thank you for all your kind comments. They are quite a pair!! I have worked very hard to make sure Lucy knows her place in the pack. I was a little worried Lucy would have some food aggression issues because she is so little. They do eat in seperate rooms but she has not shown any protective behavio...

Re: Odd behavior

Thanks for your feedback. Scooter is a dog that Nellie plays with on a very regular basis. He is neutered and has never done this before to any other animal or human. He did try to mount her once and Nellie politely sat down and he immediately stopped and brought over a stick for the both of them to...

Odd behavior

Hi All!! Today, I was walking Nellie and Lucy, we ran into another dog and his owner. We were standing and talking and Scooter (the other dog) lifted his leg and peed on Nellie's back end. I don't think she even noticed but Scooter's owner did and apologized profusely for the incident. This has neve...

Nellie has a new companion

Hi All!! I wanted to share some exciting news. This spring a friend of mine needed to give up his dog (she is a 4.8 lb chihuahua). He was really upset about having to do this. I have been thinking about adopting another dog for quiet awhile (although I was thinking another Chow). I did feel bad abou...

Re: Treats, Which do you use? Healthy

I give Nellie, Evo Wild Craving Turkey and Chicken flavor. They are grain-free and baked (they are on the expensive side but she doesn't get reats that often). She literally starts drooling when I open the treat jar and you have never seen a Chow sit so fast. She also likes Nylabone Healthy Edible c...

Chow Rescue groups in Midwest?

Hi All!!

I am wondering if anyone knows of any chow rescue groups in the Midwest. I live in Chicago. I am thinking about adopting another Chow probably not until around mid December though because I have 2 weeks off for Christmas break.

Thanks

Re: Just adopted a Chow and eager to learn!

Congratulations! Kuma is beautiful. I adopted Nellie when she was about 2 and changed her name as well (it was Renegade). It took a little while for her to learn her name but she got within a couple of weeks. It did take several months for her to totally bond to me but you would never know that now....

Any suggestions

Hi...
I want to start bathing Nellie instead of taking her to the groomer so frequently. I am not sure what to use as far as shampoo (any recommendations) and how do you dry them a forced air dryer or a regular blow dryer (Nellie would not tolerate that!!).

Thanks for any help...

Re: Rolling over

The only place that Nellie will roll over is on a walk. There is a patch of grass and every time we pass it she does almost a sommersault and lands on her back lets me rub her belly. If someone is walking by though she is up on her feet in a second. I have tried to teach her roll over in the house a...

Rolling over

Hi All!! I have a question...Nellie never (and I mean never) has rollled over on her back for a belly rub or when playing when she is inside. I thought that was odd but then I realized she never rolls over on her back when she is playing with other dogs. There are 2 dogs she plays with on almost a d...

Re: Food

After a little back and forth I found Canidae ALS (All Life Stages). I like it because Nellie loves it, the food also gives her coat a great shine. It is on the expensive side ( $50.00 for a 44lbs bag) but when you break it down it is really not that expensive (I have to buy it about every 3 months)...

Re: Puppy Love!

A chows love is very much earned, they don't just give it away to anyone. I think thats why we all feel the way we do .. you have to bond with this breed. They make you feel so special when they give those kisses cause you know they don't just give them to everyone they meet. This is so true my fam...

Re: Puppy Love!

To say I love Nellie is an under statement, she is my life!! We have a bond that I have never had with any other animal or person for that matter. She was meant to be mine. When I went to the shelter to look for a dog it was the first day she was put in the general adoption population. Everytime I w...

Re: Nellie at school

What a good girl you are Nellie. It would be great if you could take her back when the children were there but I guess insurance would not cover that. I would love to, the kids in my class know all about her but with 25 3-6 yearsolds she might get a little nervous. I would not want to put Nellie th...

Nellie at school

Hi All!! I teach preschool and had to go into work today so I took Nellie along with me. To say she enjoyed herself was an understatement!! She was so great and the other teachers loved her. She loved the bird in the classroom the best. Here are a couple of pictures...I wish I could get my students ...

Re: chow chows and speedwalking

If the temperature is right and she is in the mood Nellie will walk at a really good clip for a good hour to hour and a half. I am a very fast walker and she keeps up with me. On the flipside If the weather is warm (which is understandable) or it is right before I am going to work (which frustrates ...

Re: Questions about adopting adult chows

I adopted Nellie about a year ago. She was 2 years old at the time. She was spayed at the shelter before I took her home and I would recommend getting it out of the way as soon as possible. Nellie was very nervous when I brought her home she would pace for hours, she jumped at any noise in my apartm...

And the award goes to...

Hello All!! I have to say Nellie has always had a little anxiety when I leave for work in the morning. She knows when I am leaving because I take her out a second time, pour my coffee and get my purse to leave. She always walks me to the door licking my hand the whole time (as if to say PLEASE DON'T...

Re: I'm a new owner and I need food suggestions!

I adopted Nellie she was 2 as well and when I brought her home to my house she was very nervous she did not eat for 4 days. I was so worried I called the vet she suggested to feed her very cheap food for awhile only to get her to eat something ( this is might not be the best solution but it worked)....
