Re: Gandalf 3 Years too young

I am so sorry to hear your sad news. We lost our almost 3 yr old girl on Jan. 24th. She suddenly died in our yard. Had an autopsy done and it was an aneurism. We are in shock and mourning. My sympathies to you and your family. I know what you are going through.

Re: Young Chow, new UK owner seeking reassurance/advice

I think your schedule is fine. I would use the baby gate for now. This is a new environment for your dog and it takes time for him to learn the rules. That is the key, the rules. You need to set out clear rules for the dog. Do not leave him unsupervised at all until the potty training is under contr...

Re: Marley & Me - Book

I haven't read the book but saw an episode on the Dog Whisperer where Cesar visits the Grogan home. They got another Lab and wanted to raise it properly. The dog was going after their chickens and Cesar worked on that and brought in a retriever trainer. They are working with the dog retrieving. I th...

Re: Aggression towards family member

Be careful. He is protecting you. He needs to know you are in charge and you will protect him. He is taking ownership of you and that spells trouble.

Re: 3 almost 4 year old chow recently has started biting

The IACP stands for International Association of Canine Professionals. You can look it up on the internet. They agree to a certain standard. You can google to see if there is anyone in your area. You must still check them out well before letting them work with your dog. Questions I would ask: Do you...

One thing I forgot to mention is ask to have a thyroid test done on her. If her thyroid is out of whack it could cause aggression.

Re: 3 almost 4 year old chow recently has started biting

I agree that a vet visit is in order. If she checks out o.k. physically then you have to look for psychological reasons. I don't know why people would say you can't train a Chow. Sounds like she doesn't really respect you and that needs to be established. You really need to find a qualified professi...

Re: Cesar Milan - The Dog Whisperer

That is great about your Chow puppy. Our pup sits by the front door and waits till we invite her out. All the dogs do that, so she learned that pretty quick. She walks nicely on the leash and sits. I have been remiss in furthering her training. But I will get on it. She is very well behaved. You are...

Re: Cesar Milan - The Dog Whisperer

There is no one more positive than Cesar Millan. I have met with him personally and he is a very humble man. He stresses positive energy. He also believes in positive reinforcement, but also correction when needed. I also believe in this. I think it is the balance that is so important. Positive only...

Re: New Member Intro

That is so funny! I never connected the Brewing Controversy, but it is perfect! I, too believe in the pack mentality. Didn't have it down pat with my last Chow, but this one has started off from day one knowing I am the Alpha as do all the others. I have read all of Cesar Millan's books and it has r...

Re: CAUTION....MAY BITE!

Hi Sweetpea, What a bummer. I always say things happen for a reason. I know what you mean about the vet's. I have a great relationship with our vet and staff. I told them we got a new puppy and they asked what kind. I said Chow and it was "Oh". My vet said I wish you luck with that. I told...

Re: New Member Intro

Thanks for all your replys. Copper, the Chow is quite feisty with Moose, the Akita. She really abuses him and he just loves her! She has been an excellent pup. Do any of you have problems with your Chows being stand offish with people? I know this is their way and our last Chow mix was very stand of...

Re: New Member Intro

Hello Jonathan, I did a pup pal request on Dogster to you. This is the first Akita I have had any experience with. He came into our humane society as a stray. He was approx. 4 yrs old. We've had him just over 3 yrs. now. He has deformed front legs which don't slow him down any. He is/was a very domi...

Re: New Member Intro

Thanks Jacqui. Yes, they get along. Male Akita doesn't care much for male Newf. Newf is 10 now and not doing well. Very bad hips. Akita, Bouvier and Chow all get along great and play. I will attach a photo. Not quite sure if I know what I'm doing here :). Maybe you can guide me as to how to post a p...

Hello All, Am new and thought it would be nice to talk to other Chow owners or people owned by Chows. We have a 7 mth. Chow mix female. She is mostly Chow. Got her from a rescue. She is cream/red colour and her nose is starting to turn brown. I read that all or most cream coloured Chows' noses turn ...
